The court settlement in the lawsuit filed by the Iowa Freedom of Information Council was released Monday. The sheriff’s office had refused to release officer video and reports of the July 2018 fatal shooting by a deputy of Isaiah Hayes, of Wisconsin. The sheriff’s office promises to release the Hayes case information and similar information in other cases moving forward.

UNDATED (AP) — Rapper Kanye West will remain on the Iowa ballot as a candidate for president after a state panel rejected two challenges to his candidacy. The Iowa Candidate Nomination Objection Panel on Monday unanimously rejected one challenge related to signatures on West’s nomination papers and another that noted West was running as a “no-party” candidate but is registered in his home state of Wyoming as a Republican. The panel is comprised of Republican Secretary of State Paul Pate and Democratic Attorney General Tom Miller and Democratic Iowa Auditor Rob Sand. Besides West, eight others will appear on the ballot.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa continues to record a high number of new positive coronavirus cases as the state continues to struggle with spreading virus in several counties, including those with university campuses. Data from the Iowa Department of Public Health showed 611 new positive cases and two additional deaths, raising the total to 1,112 deaths. With many K-12 schools back in class, some districts also are struggling with high levels of county virus activity. Twelve counties have a positivity rate of 15% or higher. That’s the threshold Gov. Kim Reynolds has set for schools to request to go to online teaching.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Democrats filed a lawsuit seeking to overturn court rulings last week that invalidated thousands of absentee ballot requests. The Democratic Party, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee filed the lawsuit Monday after judges in Linn and Woodbury counties sided with President Donald Trump’s campaign and other Republican groups. They argued that elections officials in both counties erred when they sent absentee ballot request forms out with personal information filled in. The rulings mean about 57,000 ballots requests returned in Linn County and 14,000 in Woodbury County are not valid, and voters will have to resubmit requests on standard, blank forms as directed by Republican Secretary of State Paul Pate.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports five recent arrests. At around 11-p.m. Sunday, 20-year old Christopher Allen Hill, of LaVista, NE., was arrested following a traffic stop, and charged with OWI/1st offense. At approximately 6:30-a.m. Sunday, 20-year old Adelita Mariah Molina, of Omaha, was arrested for OWI/1st offense, and Speeding.

Late Saturday night, 39-year old Everett Michael Collier, of Council Bluffs, was arrested in Mills County, for Driving while barred, Speeding, and Failure to show proof of insurance. Friday afternoon, 20-year old Brandon Joseph Burghardt, of Carter Lake, was arrested at the Pottawattamie County Jail, of a Mills County warrant for Probation Violation, and on Thursday, 27-year old Paul Eugene Whitmore, of Omaha, was arrested at the Douglas County, NE., Jail, on a Mills County warrant for Probation Violation.

Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater reports a man from Bridgewater was arrested Aug. 28th, in Anita. 41-year old Douglas Matthew Pruitt was taken into custody for Domestic Abuse Assault with Bodily Injury or Mental Illness/1st offense. Pruitt was issued a summons to appear in court September 10th live or by telephone.

The Exira-EHK School Board will hold a Special Session Wednesday. The meeting in the Conference Room at the Elk Horn Building, begins at 6-p.m.  During their session, the Board will discuss and act on: Approving a Bus Bid; Approving updated Hybrid/Calendar options, along with Personnel matters(hires, transfers, resignations, etc.).

The next Regular Board meeting, is 6-p.m. Sept. 21st.

(Lewis) – The Cass County Conservation Board is holding a “Movie in the Park” Campground Program, Friday, Sept. 4th, with a showing of “Captain Marvel.” The public program will be held at the Campground Shelter at Cold Springs Park in Lewis, beginning at 9-p.m! There is NO CHARGE. Officials encourage social distancing, with marked spaces for each family, during the movie.

(Radio Iowa) – After two judges ruled tens of thousands of absentee ballot request forms from Woodbury and Linn Counties are void, the Iowa Democratic Party is filing a lawsuit seeking to overturn those rulings. Last week, the REPUBLICAN Party and the Trump campaign successfully argued in court that the forms violated a state order because voter I-D numbers were included — and the secretary of state had ordered all forms to be BLANK. Iowa Democratic Party chairman Mark Smith spoke at an online news conference this (Monday) morning. “The Iowa Democratic Party and our partners are fighting back against these voter suppression tactics,” Smith says.

Kay Pence is vice president of the Iowa Alliance for Retired Americans which represents many retired trade union members. She says the Republicans’ lawsuit seeks to reduce the number of Iowans who vote by mail. “I just don’t think we need to create more anxiety for voters,” she said, “especially for those of us who have voted mail for years.”

The Democratic committees that support candidates for the U.S. House and Senate are part of the lawsuit as well. The lawsuit challenges the Iowa Secretary of State’s authority to order county auditors to send blank absentee ballot request forms to voters. Auditors in Johnson, Linn and Woodbury County sent forms that included voter I-D numbers.

Grant, Ia. –The Grant United Methodist Church has cancelled its annual Fall Bazaar due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Church leadership encourages community members to stay home and stay safe this year. Those interested in supporting the church should consider making a donation to replace the cost of any in-kind donations or purchases they might have made. Further information can be found on the church’s Facebook page.  All money raised supports the Grant United Methodist Women and their work for mission projects and the Grant church.

Officials with the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce said Monday (today), AtlanticFest, which had been rescheduled for September 26th, has been cancelled. Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bailey Smith says “With COVID-19 cases rising in our county, the extension of the State Public Health Emergency and other liability concerns, AtlanticFest isn’t feasible this year. We understand how eager everyone is to get out and about. AtlanticFest draws thousands of people every year and the health of the community is our highest priority.”

AtlanticFest, presented by First Whitney Bank & Trust, is the Chamber’s largest fundraiser of the year and has been a community staple for almost 30 years. To still offer a community event, the Chamber will be hosting a Drive-In Movie September 26th. Smith said “We wanted to be able to give everyone an opportunity to get out of the house while maintaining social distancing. We’ve had a few Drive-In movie events over the last couple years that have been a hit and we’re excited to be able to offer it again,”
