Iowa gambling regulators ponder casino moratorium

News

June 15th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa gambling regulators plan to consider whether it’s time to stop building more casinos in Iowa at a meeting next month after narrowly voting to approve one for Jefferson. The five-member Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission approved Thursday on a 3-2 vote the $40 million casino in Jefferson. It will be the 19th state-licensed casino. Iowa also has three American Indian casinos.

With 3.1 million people, Iowa has 18,000 slot machines and about 470 tables for poker and other games at the 18 state-run casinos. Two consulting firms hired by the commission say Iowa’s modest population growth and increasing gambling competition from adjacent states limits future growth potential.

They recommended no more casinos, and commission chairman Jeff Lamberti says that will be discussed at the July 31 meeting in Johnston.

Keep in mind, that winds of 60-to 80-miles per hour can have the same effect as an EF-1 tornado, and tree debris may be difficult to see on the road at night.

If you are camping or have plans to do so, make sure you have a way to receive weather information and a safe place for emergency shelter, and if at home, keep your weather radio ready to go with fresh batteries.

BOIL ADVISORY LIFTED IN SOLDIER, MONONA COUNTY

Officials with the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resource reports the residents of Soldier in western Iowa’s Monona County can drink their tap water again, as the boil advisory that was issued earlier in the week was lifted Friday afternoon. Loss of water pressure has the potential to allow bacteria to enter the water system.

Council Bluffs residents toss tons of storm debris

News

June 13th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Council Bluffs residents dropped off tons of tree and wet basement debris after the city offered to accept the items at no charge for a week following an intense storm. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports the city offered to take the items for free after a June 3 storm pounded parts of western Iowa with hail, rain and high winds.

Public health director Donn Dierks says people dropped off more than 100 tons of tree debris and 14 tons of wet basement items, such as carpeting and drywall. Dierks says he expected people to bring in more soaked basement items and thinks the relatively small amount reflects that the city’s storm sewers worked well.

The special offer ended Wednesday.
