Stanton Accident Results in Charges to Mother and Son

News

June 27th, 2014 by Jim Field

Montgomery County deputies filed charged against two people after a minor traffic mishap.  Deputies report that on Thursday just after 10:00 pm they were called to the 400 block of Thorn Avenue in Stanton for a hit and run.  When they arrived 55 year old Karen Louise Jones of Stanton said that her 2006 Dodge Stratus was legally parked in the 700 block of Thorn Avenue and that a vehicle had struck the left rear of her car causing damage.  She claimed that she was not able to get a vehicle description because she heard the accident but didn’t see the vehicle.  Deputies determined that the scene did not match what Jones had described.  A short time later, deputies found the accident scene in Anderson Park in Stanton.  After investigation, deputies determined that Jones’ son, 15 year old Christopher Owen Jones of Stanton was driving the vehicle in a reckless manner and struck a tree near the baseball field in the park causing about $3000 damage.  Karen Jones was arrested for filing a false report and permitting an unauthorized minor to drive.  Christopher Jones was cited with a violation of a graduated drivers license and with reckless driving.

Pott. County Authorities warn about phone scam

News

June 26th, 2014 by Ric Hanson

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Department late Thursday afternoon said a scam in which a telephone caller identifies himself as being with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office has recently been reported. Sheriff Jeff Danker said two incidents have been reported where the caller identifies himself as Deputy Mark Adams with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office. The caller says the victim has a warrant and that if they do not call within a certain amount of time that Deputies would be sent to arrest them. The number that they appear to be calling from also correlates with actual Sheriff’s Office phone numbers.Pott Co Sheriff

Danker said suspects can sometimes create a fake caller ID to make the call appear legitimate. He added that authorities in Pott. County can officially confirm that “No employee with the name Deputy Mark Adams is employed with the Pottawattamie County Sherriff’s Office.” Danker said they have also received reports of several variations of fraud attempts, with some incidents having similarities.
A caller who claims to be with a business, utility company or law enforcement calls and claims that the victim is behind on a payment and will face some problems if they don’t pay immediately. The caller tells the victim to purchase a money card and call back with the card number.

In recent months officials have taken reports where callers claimed to be from MidAmerican Energy, the IRS and a law enforcement official that arrested the victim’s family member. As a reminder Law Enforcement will NEVER demand payment by phone and reputable companies generally don’t demand money card payments.
