DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Along with weather extremes including floods and drought, experts say a warmer Iowa climate also could boost the population of ticks, mosquitoes and fire ants and make poison ivy more potent. The Iowa Wildlife Federation says in a report released Tuesday the weather extremes brought on by climate change will likely alter the behavior of pests.

Dr. Yogesh Shah, associate dean of the global health department at Des Moines University says every increase in temperature by a degree or two increases mosquito populations by eight to tenfold. Ticks also grow faster in humid warm weather. He says last year Iowa had a 40 percent increase in Lyme disease.

Shah say poison ivy also could become even more toxic thanks to the rise in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Financial Adviser Judd Meneely hosted the Atlantic Area Ambassadors for a ribbon cutting celebrating the new Edward Jones investment and retirement planning location on 7th Street, in Atlantic. Meneely opened his business 13 years ago and moved to the newly renovated building this past July.

The Iowa Aviation Museum in Greenfield has announced an upcoming dedication ceremony will honor 27 men and women whose hard work has created the Iowa general aviation industry we enjoy today.
Opening in May 1990, the Iowa Aviation Museum, located in Greenfield, was formed to preserve, display and educate the public on Iowa’s rich aviation heritage. The collection includes many vintage aircraft and other historical memorabilia ranging from balloons of the 1800s to Iowa’s contribution to space exploration.

Aviation legend Howard Gregory dedicated the museum to the original Aviation Pioneers, the men and women whose hard work, tireless hours and sometimes dangerous efforts created the Iowa general aviation industry of airports, aerial transportation, instruction and agriculture applicators. As the museum approaches its silver anniversary, officials are honoring the next generation of Iowa aviation promoters.

These are the airport operators, pilots, mechanics, and salesmen whose untiring efforts continued the work of their predecessors to give us the Iowa aviation system we enjoy today. Many are the sons and daughters of the original aviation pioneers and for this reason shall be referred to as the “2nd Generation.”

Twenty-seven individuals were chosen by their peers and will be recognized at a formal ceremony including the dedication of a plaque bearing their names. SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Woodbury County officials are considering whether to add more nurses to treat inmates at the jail, after its sheriff pleaded for more support. The county board will look into costs before making a decision in September. County Sheriff Dave Drew told board members he needs the additional personnel to properly oversee inmates at the jail. Board Chairman George Boykin said there’s no money to add nurses in the current budget.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s field hockey players have released a statement supporting former coach Tracey Griesbaum, who was fired earlier this month. The players told the student newspaper, the Daily Iowan, that Griesbaum’s firing was “unfair and unjust.” The players went on to say that it left them questioning the leadership of the Iowa athletic department. Griesbaum told The Associated Press that her firing was based on false claims by former players that she bullied and mistreated them.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Two more Iowa counties have been added to a federal disaster declaration issued recently in response to severe weather. Crawford and Shelby counties have been added to the disaster declaration granted two weeks ago to 22 Iowa counties that experienced damage due to storms and flooding.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — A former Council Bluffs doctor sentenced to prison for possession of child pornography has agreed to a plea deal in a separate case. Sixty-nine-year-old Dennis Jones was sentenced to 10 years in prison for lascivious acts with a child. He will serve it concurrently with a 10-year federal prison sentence for possession of child pornography. Authorities say they found about 1.2 million images and 9,300 videos of child pornography during a search of Jones’ home.

The Atlantic City Council, Wednesday evening, is expected to act on approving the Second Reading of Ordinance No. 953 “An Ordinance Designating the 2014 Urban Revitalization Area.” The Council had previously adopted a resolution for an Urban Revitalization Area, but that plan does not become effective until the Council adopts the Ordinance, which designates “All real property contained within the incorporated limits of the City of Atlantic.”  The Council held the first reading of the ordinance at it’s meeting on August 2nd, beginning at 5:30-p.m.

The Council will also hold the first reading of an Ordinance (#954) that adds a new subsection pertaining to Speed Regulation. During the recodification process last year, that section of the City Code was inadvertently left out. The Chief of Police and City Attorney have asked that the new Code be amended to reinstate the old subsection.

In other business, the Council is expected to act on a “Motion to Accept Letter of Transmittal from the Planning & Zoning Commission,” to Vacate Lot A of Southern Heights Subdivision Second Addition.
Zoning Administrator John Lund reports that the Planning & Zoning Commission at their meeting on August 12th, reviewed and approved the Southern Heights 2nd Addition site plan submitted by Don Sonntag. The site plan calls for six duplex condominiums facing 22nd Street.

One of the lots (Lot A) is platted as a street entrance which conforms to the City’s adopted Comprehensive Plan’s Transportation Concept, that shows future street connections in the area between 19th and 22nd Streets. In order for the site plan to move forward including a sixth duplex on the platted street entrance, the Commission has recommended that Lot A be vacated by the City Council which would allow a duplex condominium unit to be built on it.

And, the Council may act on authorizing the Mayor to Execute Loan Agreement Between the City and RD Atlantic. Last September, RD Atlantic LLP asked the Council for financial assistance for an Elderly Affordable Housing/Rehab Project. The project involved the Regency Villa Apartments at 1601 Redwood Dr. The Council agreed at that time to provide a twenty year, $20,000 interest free loan to RD Atlantic with the principal due in 2030.

RD Atlantic has agreed to pay the City $750 per year as payment in lieu of taxes (PILOT) as their facility is operated as a non-profit and does no currently pay taxes. ThePILOT will, in essence, serve to pay the City 3.75% interest on the loan and will be a separate side agreement.

Governor Terry Branstad received word today (Tuesday) that two counties have been added to the Presidential Disaster Declaration granted for 22 Iowa counties impacted by severe weather in June and July. Crawford and Shelby counties have been added to the disaster declaration granted Aug. 5, 2014.

Those two counties now join several of the other counties, including Audubon, in the declaration approved by the President, which provides federal funding to the declared counties under the Public Assistance Program. Public Assistance funds may be used for emergency work and the repair or replacement of disaster-damaged facilities and may include debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair of damaged public property, loans needed by communities for essential government functions and grants for public schools.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday (8/19), issued a report on an accident that occurred back on Aug. 10th. Officials say at around 1:55-p.m, a two-vehicle accident happened on I-80 westbound near the 54 mile marker.

A 2001 Ford owned and driven by 70-year old Gloria E. Brown, of Doniphan, NE, was westbound on I-80 when the vehicle merged into the left lane and hit the rear of a 2011 Nissan Altima, owned and driven by 41-year old Roxanne Salsberry, of Des Moines.

The Salsberry vehicle in turn, was pushed into the rear of a 2015 Subaru Forester driven by 67-year old Linda K. Roskens,  of Chapman, KS. No injuries were reported. Damage from the collisions amounted to $2,700. No citations were issued.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest on Saturday of a Madison County man. 18-year old Mason Ross Crabbs, of Earlham, was taken into custody on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Crabbs was also cited for Minor in Possession of Alcohol. He was brought to the Cass County Jail, booked, and released later that same day on his own recognizance.

A former Council Bluffs doctor was found guilty this (Tuesday) morning in Pottawattamie County District Court, of an amended charge of felony Lascivious Acts with a Child. The Daily NonPareil reports up until 4th District Court Judge Richard Davidson handed down the sentence against 69-year old Dennis Seaborn Jones, Jones maintained his innocence.

Davidson then sentenced Jones to the maximum of 10 years in prison, which Jones will serve concurrently with a 10-year federal sentence on child pornography charges he was sentenced to on Friday. Concurrently means the two sentences will be served at the same time.

The Harlan Police Department has released their report for the week. A convenience store in Harlan reported to police a theft from their business. A review of the surveillance video showed Eddie Peterson of Harlan taking merchandise off the shelf and leaving without paying for it. Police went to Petersons home where he was cited and released on 5th degree theft charges.

Harlan Police also cited Tamie King West for trespass after officers were called to the 16-hundred block of 8th Street in reference to a dispute over a cell phone.

Several hand tools and power tools were reported stolen by Scott Kobold of Harlan at his residence. The Harlan Police Department continues to investigate the matter.

A Harlan man was also arrested by Harlan Police following a traffic stop. Jerome Wright as arrested on an active Shelby County Warrant for failure to appear. As a result of the stop Wright was round to be in possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia and was transported the Shelby County Jail where he was charged with possession of a controlled substance being marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of drug paraphernalia, prohibited acts, and failure to affix a drug tax stamp Wright was also cited by the Harlan Police department for failure to prove security against liability.
