SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former coach and director of a program for at-risk students at Sioux City’s North High School has pleaded not guilty to having sex with a student. The Sioux City Journal reports  that 29-year-old Erick Deleon, of Sioux City, entered the plea Friday in Woodbury County District Court. He is charged with one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee. His trial has been set for May 12.

Court documents say Deleon sent sexually explicit text messages and engaging in sexual acts with a 16-year-old female student. Authorities say the girl was one of his students. Deleon also was an assistant boys soccer coach at West High School.

With the chance of accumulating snowfall to occur in Clarinda later this weekend the Clarinda Police Department would like to remind the citizens of Clarinda about the emergency snow ordinance. The ordinance states that; no person shall park any motor vehicle or other apparatus upon any street of the city that will obstruct the removal of snow when there has been an accumulation of two (2) inches or more.

Any vehicle left parked on any street in violation of this ordinance may be impounded, and the registered owner of the vehicle will be subject to a $15.00 parking fine, and payment of all applicable towing and storage fees in order for the vehicle to be released.

The National Weather Service has expanded the WINTER STORM WARNING for parts of southern and central Iowa to include most of the state. The Warning is in effect from 6-pm Sat. (1/31) until 9-pm Sunday (2/1), for Monona-Harrison-Shelby and Pottawattamie Counties in the KJAN listening area, and from 7-pm Sat. thru 9-pm Sunday for Cass, Adair, Adams, Audubon, Guthrie, Dallas, Sac, Crawford, Carroll, Ringgold, Taylor and Union Counties. In the warned area, 7-to 10-inches of snow are possible by Sunday night.

Winds will turn to the northeast early Sunday morning at 10-to 20-mph and gust to near 30-mph by Sunday afternoon. Roads are expected to become snow covered and hazardous. Blowing snow Sunday will reduce visibility and make it difficult for state and county road crews to keep the roads clear. Travel on in the event of an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case you become stranded.

The rain-snow mix has changed over to all snow in western Iowa as of mid-day, Saturday. Heavy snow is possible overnight, with some additional light accumulation on Sunday. In addition to the WINTER STORM WARNING, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for far southwest Iowa from 9-p.m. Saturday until 6-pm Sunday for Fremont and Mills Counties.

Council Bluffs Police responded to the scene of an armed robbery of a motel early Saturday morning.  Officers responded at 12:52am to the Days Inn Motel at 3208 South 7th Street in Council Bluffs.  The suspect entered the lobby area of the motel and pointed a semi-automatic handgun at the clerk on duty.  He then reached over the counter and took an undetermined amount of cash from the register drawer and fled on foot.

The clerk saw the suspect leave the scene in a white SUV and an officer in the area spotted the vehicle northbound on South Expressway.  Officers attempted to stop the vehicle when a pursuit began with the suspect throwing cash and clothing out of the car window and ramming a police cruiser in the process.  The suspect eventually left the vehicle in the 2700 block of South 6th Street and fled on foot.

At 1:11am the 911 center received a call from a female subject stating that her husband had just come home and wanted to report being assaulted and having his 2011 Kia Sorrento stolen.  Officers responded to the residence where he was transported to the Criminal Investigation Division for questioning.  It was later determined that the man was involved in the robbery and assault of a peace officer and was booked into Pottawattamie County Corrections.  The investigation is still ongoing.

Red Oak Police responded to the scene of an injured Red Oak man on Friday at 6:00pm to assist Red Oak Rescue, when the man became combative.

53-year-old Kenneth Eugene Stroup of Red Oak had been intoxicated and was bleeding from his head after a fall.  While being helped Mr. Stroup became combative and assaulted a paramedic.  He was subdued and transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital where he was later cleared.

After being cleared from the hospital Stroup was arrested for Assault on a Health Care Provider, A Serious Misdemeanor.  Stroup also had two separate active warrants out of Decatur and Clarke Counties fro Failure to Appear.  He was taken to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on three different bonds set at $1,000; $2,000; and $2,000 all cash only.  The Red Oak Police Department was assisted by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a crash and foot pursuit early Saturday morning.  At approximately 1:59am deputies were following a black 1995 Chevy K1500 driven by 19-year-old Kyle James Olson of Red Oak traveling westbound on 180th Street.  Olson then ran a stop sign at 180th Street and K Avenue and lost control of the vehicle and rolled it onto it’s side.  Deputies then turned on their emergency lights as they approached the vehicle when Olson exited and fled on foot.  A K9 was deployed and tracked Olson to a rural residence where he was taken into custody.

Olson was transported to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and charged with Interference with Official Acts and Failure to Obey a Stop Sign.  Damages were estimated at $8,000.

Senator Joni Ernst is now chair of a subcommittee that oversees U-S-D-A programs that promote renewable energy and broadband expansion. “Agriculture is the life-blood of Iowa and so this subcommittee will focus on improving quality of life for Iowa farmers and farmers across the country,” Ernst says. Ernst is a member of the Senate Ag Committee and just this week she was named chairman of the subcommitee on rural development and energy. Ernst says identifying ways to “enhance” rural life is a priority for the subcommittee and she sees former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack — who is U.S. Secretary of Agriculture — as a partner.

“I know that despite differences between our two parties, he always did work very hard for the people of Iowa, so I do look forward to having those discussions with him,” Ernst says. Ernst is also a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. Anti-war protesters disrupted an Armed Services Committee hearing this week and Ernst says it was an unfortunate distraction from the testimony of former Secretaries of State Henry Kissinger, George Schultz and Madeleine Albright.

“I appreciate the fact that people have the right to protest, but we do have a sense of decorum and we do wish to hear from the guests who visit with us in the senate committees,” Ernst says. Arizona Senator John McCain is chairman of the committee and he called the protesters “low-life scum.” Ernst says those are McCain’s words, not hers, and it’s up to McCain to defend that kind of “verbiage.” Ernst also suggests the protesters might be better off if they presenting their views “in a more civil manner.” The “Code Pink” protesters confronted former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger as the 91-year-old entered the room and waved handcuffs near his head as he sat down at the witness table.

A Council Bluffs man accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a teenager, will stand trial Feb. 5th. The Daily NonPareil reports 48-year old youth softball coach John Osborn is charged with four counts of third-degree sexual abuse upon a minor, with regard to an incident involving a 14-year-old friend of his daughter. The incident allegedly occurred in July, 2014.

Osborn has pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to the Council Bluffs Police Department, the teen was a member of the team Osborn coached. The victim stated she and Osborn began exchanging text messages in June 2014.

Police in Clarinda report two area teens were arrested Friday in connection with a residential burglary that took place Thursday afternoon. Police Chief Keith Brothers says at around 3:40-p.m., Thursday, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at 100 E. Nishna Street. When they arrived, the suspected burglars had already fled the scene. Tyler Price, who owns the home, was not home at the time of the burglary.

When Price returned home, he discovered property valued at approximately $700 had been stolen. On Friday, January 30th police arrested two juvenile males, ages 15 and 16, for felony burglary and theft of property from Price’s home. Both juveniles were transported to the Southwest Iowa Juvenile Detention Center in Council Bluffs.

The arrests will be referred to Page County Juvenile Court Services and to the juvenile division of the Page County Attorney’s Office for additional action.
