Pott. County authorities warn of online buy-sell scams

News

April 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County report they have received two separate reports of scams from residents attempting to sell items on Craigslist. The Sheriff’s Office says if you use Craigslist to sell products or services, it’s important to be aware of the scams you may encounter along the way.

One of the most common is the Craigslist overpayment scam, which usually involves a cashier’s check or money order sent from the buyer for an amount that exceeds the cost of the item being sold. With this scam, these cashier’s checks and money orders won’t clear, leaving the seller responsible for the amount with the bank.

Once you’re aware of the tactics scammers use, they can be fairly easy to spot. Most conversations will start via email or text message, and include the use of a third-party such as an assistant or shipping agent. The buyers will be willing to pay for an item without first seeing it, and often claim to be unavailable to pick up the item for an extended period of time. After you agree to a price, the scammer attempts to send a money order or cashier’s check through the mail.

Authorities say you shouldn’t proceed any further with the transaction. The best way to avoid an overpayment scam is to conduct business face-to-face. Although not all transactions completed through the mail are scams, it does increase the possibility that something will go wrong.

Other advice includes: Don’t accept cashier’s checks, money orders or personal checks. Stick to cash transactions whenever possible, and never accept an amount over the price; and, Never send money using wire services to someone you don’t know. If you’re asked to cash a check and then send a refund using a money payment service, report the individual to Craigslist and walk away from the transaction.

If you’ve been approached with a possible scam, or have been scammed during a transaction, report it to the Internet Fraud Complaint Center and the Federal Trade Commission (https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/#crnt&panel1-1). You should also contact Craigslist immediately with the details (http://www.craigslist.org/about/scams). If you’ve found the scam in a post, ensure you include the link so it can be taken down.

Hearing on AHST/Walnut CSD merger to be held May 21st

News

April 30th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

The reorganization of the AHST and Walnut school districts took another step forward this week after the Green Hills Area Education Agency accepted signed petitions from the districts’ residents. According to the Daily NonPareil, a hearing will be held before the AEA board 6-p.m. May 21st, at the AHST High School cafeteria in Avoca. At that time, the board is expected to vote on calling for a special election on the reorganization.

AHST, which serves Hancock, Shelby and Tennant along with Avoca, and Walnut are proposing a consolidation after years of whole-grade sharing. Walnut is facing an eventual shortfall in its spending authority, along with declining enrollment, and is proposing the merger as a solution. If the reorganization is approved, it will make AHST-Walnut the second-largest school in the Western Iowa Conference (WIC), according to Jesse Ulrich, the shared superintendent of both districts.

Lane Plugge, the chief administrator of the Green Hills AEA, said the AEA board verified the reorganization petition was consistent with its plan for district reorganizations. Plugge said in advance of the upcoming hearing, residents of both districts can submit objections on the proposal to the AEA, either arguing it shouldn’t proceed or asking their land be moved to another school district. Those objections will be received until Noon on May 12th.

The districts hope to have the reorganization question on the ballot for the regular school board election on Sept. 8th. If voters approve the merger, the districts would reorganize effective July 1st, 2016. Next year, Walnut will continue to serve elementary school students at the Walnut Community School while continuing to send seventh through 12th grades to AHST — the same as the school districts have operated this year.

(4:40-p.m. 4/29) UPDATE ON POLLUTION RELEASES NEAR RED OAK

Ag/Outdoor, News

April 29th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Officials with the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources said late this (Wednesday) afternoon, that they have traced ammonia found in a culvert near Red Oak to a hog confinement on the southwest corner of town. On Tuesday, the DNR responded to a report from Hog Haven, owned by Lindoah, LLC, that a broken pipe leaked drinking water into a manure pit under the building. The excess water caused the pit to overflow.

Today (Wednesday), the DNR confirmed that ammonia found in a culvert Tuesday came from the hog confinement. An unknown amount of contaminated water flowed into a road ditch and eventually to the culvert and a tributary of the East Nishnabotna River.

In another incident Tuesday, the DNR investigated a release from Nachurs, a fertilizer company in Red Oak. The release occurred when the company pumped water from a storm water basin into a drainage ditch. The company reported the release once they realized the water was contaminated.

Both releases have been contained. The DNR checked the river below Red Oak Wednesday and found no sign of an extensive fish kill. However, they did find six dead minnows below Nachurs. Field test results from Tuesday and Wednesday showed no further sign of contamination in the river. However, residents should keep children and pets out of the creek between Nachurs and the Nishnabotna River until 48 hours after cleanup is complete.

The DNR is working with both companies and Montgomery County Emergency  Management to ensure proper cleanup.
