A Red Oak man was arrested Saturday night on a charge of Public Intoxication. Police say 40-year old Troy Alan Myers was taken into custody at around 11:40-p.m. in the area of Broadway and Linden Avenues. His bond was set at $300.

About 15-hundred Republicans gathered near Boone, Saturday, to eat pulled pork for lunch and listen to seven Republican presidential hopefuls boast of their own records and roast President Obama, Hillary Clinton and, sometimes, one another. Senator Joni Ernst greeted the crowd shortly before two o’clock. “This is my first inaugural ‘Roast and Ride,'” Ernst said. “We do hope we will do this every year, so start lookig ahead at next year on your calendar and prepare, because I think it’s going to be twice as big next year.”

Ernst and Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker — a likely, but not-yet-declared candidate — were at the front of a line of more than 300 motorcyclists who went a 45-minute road trip from Des Moines to Boone that ended at event site. During his turn on stage, Walker emphasized foreign policy, with a warning about “radical Islamic terrorism.”  “We need a president in this country who’s going to stand up and tell the American people what may be hard to say, that this threat isn’t like the Cold War where containment isn’t enough,” Walker said. “No instead, this is like a virus and if we don’t take it out, we’re in trouble.”

Newly-declared candidate Rick Perry organized his own fundraiser in Perry, Iowa, and motorcycle ride to Boone. When he spoke to the crowd, Perry emphasized his 15-year record as the governor of Texas. “This going to be a ‘show me, don’t tell me’ election,” Perry said, repeating a theme from his announcement speech this past week. “This is going to be one of those where we stand and say, ‘What have you done? Where have you led?'” Florida Senator Marco Rubio suggested both Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush were the wrong choices for 2016. “If we keep promoting the same people, we will get the same result and the future will leave us behind,” Rubio said. Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee criticized policies, including expanded trade, that he says have “shrunk the economy.”

“I don’t want to be president so I can create jobs in China,” Huckabee said. “I want to be president so we can create good jobs in America, for Americans. I’m not a globalist.” Former Hewlett-Packard C-E-O Carly Fiorina touted a recent FOX News poll that found 64 percent of voters would like to see Fiorina debate the Democratic Party’s likely presidential nominee.  “I think what we need to ask Hillary Clinton now is: ‘Mrs. Clinton, what else don’t we know?'” Fiorina said. Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, suggested the Republican competitors would not be “tearing each other up” like the G-O-P candidates did in 2012.

“That was a big mistake. We’re going to do better,” Carson said. “We know who the enemy is and it is not us.” South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham spoke at length about the need to send troops back into the Middle East to defeat Islamic militants there and to make changes at home in Social Security and Medicare. “There’s no problem that can’t be fixed and there’s no way to fix these problems without sacrifice,” Graham said. “If you’re looking for an easy way ahead, I’m not your guy.” The event was held outdoors, on the Central Iowa Expo grounds near Boone where the Iowa Republican Party plans to hold its Iowa Straw Poll in August.

None of the candidates have committed to participating, however, and critics say it’s an event that should end. Congressman Steve King defended it during his speech Saturday. “We have about 10 announced candidates and another five or six waiting in the wings and so this process that happens here August 8 needs to happen,” King said. “And it needs to happen a couple more times maybe across the country. Maybe New Hampshire, if you’re out there listening. Maybe South Carolina, if you’re out there listening. The field does need to be narrowed. We don’t want to say no to anybody, but it needs to be narrowed.”

The next event which will attract a group of G-O-P candidates to the state is set for mid-July. The host organization is The Family Leader, a conservative Christian organization that had rented facilities in Ames for August, but moved their date into July once Iowa G-O-P leaders decided to once again hold their Straw Poll.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – The Missouri River between Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Omaha, Nebraska, is in for a spring cleaning this month. The Council Bluffs Daily Nonpareil reports that three groups – Missouri River Relief of Columbia, Missouri, and Back to the River and Fontenelle Forest, both of Omaha – will team up for the river cleanup project on June 13.

The event headquarters will be the boat ramps at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs, with the cleanup running from 9 a.m. until noon. Organizers will provide volunteers with gloves, trash bags, an event T-shirt and reusable water bottle. Volunteers are encouraged to bring sunglasses and bug spray and wear appropriate clothes for the work, including boots or tennis shoes and long pants to protect against poison ivy.

Red Oak Police, Saturday, arrested 32 year old Joseph Aaron Nelson, of Red Oak. Nelson was taken into custody for domestic abuse assault, and was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman accused of attacking her family with a Swiffer Wet Jet has been arrested on charges of domestic abuse and assault. The Des Moines Register reports that police arrived at the woman’s home Monday on reports of child endangerment and found the 45-year-old woman visibly upset. She told police her husband and son had attacked her.

But family members told a different story — namely that the woman had attacked them with the motorized mop. The son said his parents argue a lot and that he had caught the attack on video using his cellphone. Police reviewed the video and say it showed the woman hitting her family members with the Swiffer.

Police in Council Bluffs say 26-year old Nicholas Malone, of Oakland, was arrested Friday evening on multiple charges following a traffic stop and pursuit. Bluffs Police Sgt. Darren Budd said when an officer tried to stop a stolen 2004 Dodge Ram truck just before 6-p.m. Friday, the driver (later identified as Malone) recklessly sped-off on north 6th Street. The officer discontinued the pursuit out of concerns for public safety.

Just after 8-p.m., the same stolen truck was seen at a Casey’s store at 503 23rd Avenue, in Council Bluffs. A Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputy located and kept an eye on the vehicle until additional officers and deputies arrived on the scene.  Malone was found inside the truck and taken into custody.

Inside the vehicle, authorities found three long knives, a numerous keys, 14 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and cash. In addition, Malone was wanted on a warrant out of Council Bluffs for 1st Degree Burglary, and a felony warrant out of Omaha.

He was arrested for Pott. County on a charge of 1st degree Theft, with regard to the stolen truck and guns, and for Council Bluffs Police, on charges of Felony eluding; Possession of Meth with the Intent to Deliver; Felon in Possession of Firearms; Carrying Weapons; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia; A warrant for 1st Degree burglary and for Being a Fugitive from Justice.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) – Forecasters are warning that severe weather could hit parts of the nation’s midsection this weekend. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma said there is a risk for tornadoes and very large hail in northeastern Colorado on Friday, with severe storms developing in Nebraska and Iowa during the day today (Saturday).

By Sunday, the storms could stretch from near the Oklahoma Panhandle into the Ohio Valley. The threat of tornadoes during the day Saturday in the mid-Missouri River Valley is expected to evolve into a mass of storms with high winds.

Police in Red Oak report the arrest early this (Saturday) morning of 33-year old Ryan Michael McDougall. The Red Oak man was taken into custody at around 12:25-a.m. in the 700 block of East Washington Avenue, on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault. McDougall was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.

DENISON, Iowa (AP) — A judge sentenced a Denison man to life in prison without parole for killing an elderly couple last year and then lighting their home on fire. The Sioux City Journal reports Judge John Ackerman on Friday sentenced 20-year-old Jayden Chapman to consecutive life terms without parole. A jury convicted Chapman last month of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of 80-year-old Marvin Huelsing and 81-year-old Alice Huisenga at a trailer home. He also was convicted of reckless use of fire.

Trial evidence shows Chapman and another man convicted in the case, 27-year-old Michael Schenk, of Denison, were stealing scrap metal when the elderly couple arrived. Chapman and Schenk shot them and set their trailer on fire.

Chapman still faces charges related to an attempted escape from jail.
