Day 1 of the Cass County Fair (July 23rd)

While final preparations for the 2015 Cass County Fair began Wednesday, here in Atlantic, many other activities are set for today. The schedule includes: weigh-in’s for the swine and rabbit check-in this morning; 4-H static exhibit judging and the Clover Kids showcase, will also take place this morning, along with the Meat Goat weigh-in and Dairy check-in. A Food Sale will get underway at 10-a.m. as well, at the Community Center next to the Fairgrounds.

The Food Stand is open from 6:30-a.m. until 10-p.m. each day of the Fair. Specials this Noon at the Food Stand include Hamburgers, Hot Dogs, Pulled Pork and Ham sandwiches. Hot beef is sold nightly at the Food Stand beginning at 5-p.m., with Hot Pork sold only after 5-p.m. on Friday and Saturday.

This evening, the horse, poultry and sheep weigh-in’s will take place. The big event kicking-off the Fair, is the King and Queen Contest at 7:30-p.m., followed by Senior Recognition, at 8-p.m.  The nine Queen candidates include:

Public intox. arrest in Red Oak Wed. evening

Police in Red Oak arrested 55-year old Eric Eugene Thornton, Wednesday evening. Thornton (Whose address was not listed) was charged with Public Intoxication and held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond.

1 injured in 2 car collision in Red Oak Wed. afternoon

Red Oak Police say female passenger in a vehicle involved in a collision Wednesday afternoon in Red Oak, was transported to the hospital following the crash, that took place at around 6:15-p.m. at 4th and E. Valley Streets. Authorities say 24-year old Breanna Hancock, of Chariton, was injured in the crash, and was transported by Red Oak EMS to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Neither driver was injured.

Officials say a 2007 Pontiac G8 driven by 23-year old Christine McGlade, of Red Oak, was traveling east on E. Valley Street, and was struck by a northbound 2012 Kia Forte, driven by 17-year old Bayley Lampe, of Red Oak. McGlade admitted to authorities that she had failed to yield at the intersection.

In addition to Failure to Yield, McGlade was cited for Failure to provide proof of insurance. Damage from the collision amounted to $10,000.

2 injured during motorcycle vs. pickup collision in Montgomery County Wed. night

A man and a teenager were hurt during a collision Wednesday night, east of Red Oak. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports the accident happened at around 9:40-p.m. on 200th Street near the intersection with K Avenue, when 16-year old Owen Riley Vondielingen, of Red Oak, attempted to make a U-turn on K Avenue from eastbound 200th Street.

The teen told authorities he saw a small light behind him prior to making the turn, but though it was farther away than it actually was. While making the u-turn, the pickup Vondielingen was driving was struck in the driver’s side door by a 1982 Honda Goldwing, occupied by the driver, 44-year old Dustin Edward Swagel, and his passenger 17-year old, Gustin Glenn Swagel, both of Stanton.

The occupants of the cycle suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported by Red Oak rescue to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Damage from the crash amounted to $7,000. Deputies cited Vondielingen for Failure to obey a stop sign,

Red Oak Police and Red Oak Fire and Rescue assisted at the scene.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governor Terry Branstad is authorizing the Iowa National Guard to increase security and arm additional personnel at facilities, including recruiting stations. Last Thursday, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire at a military recruiting office and a Navy-Marine operations center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing four Marines.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A 53-year-old Davenport man convicted of assault in the fight death of his brother-in-law has been sued by the man’s family. The Quad-City Times says the lawsuit was filed last month on behalf of the family of Douglas Whalen. Police say Van Hecke and Whalen got into an altercation during a vow renewal for Van Hecke and his wife, who is Whalen’s sister, at a park in Davenport in June 2013.

SABULA, Iowa (AP) — Iowa highway crews had to plow a bridge crossing the Mississippi River because of ankle-deep mayflies that swarmed the span. The Dubuque Telegraph Herald reports the insects on Saturday night swarmed to the Savannah-Sabula bridge, connecting Iowa and Illinois. The bugs covered the bridge so thickly, and caused such slick conditions, that crews plowed the bugs off the lanes and applied sand for traction.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — IndyCar rookie Sage Karam’s biggest step forward was overshadowed by altercations with veteran Ed Carpenter After the race Carpenter said that Karam “didn’t have a clue.” Karam maintains that he wouldn’t change a thing if he had to race the final 20 laps over again, and he finished third in Saturday’s race at Iowa.

Branstad authorizes further security at National Guard sites

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gov. Terry Branstad is authorizing the Iowa National Guard to increase security and arm additional personnel at facilities, including recruiting stations. Branstad said Wednesday he was authorizing Maj. Gen. Timothy Orr to strengthen security, but would leave the decisions to Orr’s discretion. Earlier this week, Branstad asked Orr to review the current security measures at National Guard sites.

The Republican governor also plans to ask the federal government to review the protections at all military facilities. He’ll make that request during a meeting this week in Washington for a group of governors who advise federal officials on security matters.

Last Thursday, Muhammad Youssef Abdulazeez opened fire at a military recruiting office and a Navy-Marine operations center in Chattanooga, Tennessee, killing four Marines. A sailor wounded in the attack died Saturday.

Governor Branstad requests Presidential Disaster Declaration

Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, Wednesday, signed a letter to be delivered to President Obama requesting a Presidential Disaster Declaration for 19 Iowa counties where significant damage was sustained from damaging winds, tornadoes,
heavy rains, hail and thunderstorms from June 20-25, 2015.

The counties included in this request are: Allamakee, Appanoose, Butler, Clayton,
Dallas, Davis, Des Moines, Guthrie, Howard, Jefferson, Lee, Lucas, Marion, Mitchell, Monroe, Warren, Wayne, Winneshiek and Wright.

The governor requested funding under the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s
Public Assistance Program, which is used to rebuild damaged infrastructure that may
include roads, bridges, culverts and other public facilities, or to cover costs of
emergency work during, and debris removal after, the storms. A joint federal, state
and local preliminary damage assessment of the 19 counties found the severe weather
caused an estimated $5.1 million worth of damage that could be eligible under the
Public Assistance Program.

The governor also requested funding to conduct hazard mitigation activities for the
entire state.

6 arrests reported in Mills County

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports six arrests. Taken into custody Tuesday (7/21), was: 36-year old Nicholas Thomas Rohrberg, Council Bluffs, for being a Felon in Possession of Firearm and Failure to File SR-22 Insurance, and, 28-year old Joshua James Elwood, of Stanton, for Criminal Mischief in the 2nd degree. Bonds for the men were set at $6,000 and $5,000, respectively.

On Monday, 55-year old Paul Francis Williams, of Lincoln, NE., was arrested in Mills County for Possession of a Controlled Substance, the bond for which was set at $1,000.

On Sunday, deputies in Mills County arrested 49-year old Stephanie Lee Hightshoe, of Villisca, for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Her bond was set at $1,000. And on Saturday, 21-year old Dakota David Kempton, of Malvern, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault and Harassment. He was being held without bond in the Mills County Jail. Also arrested Saturday was 50-year old Jeffrey Allen Fink, of Silver City, for Harassment in the 1st degree, Public Intoxication, and Trespass. His bond was set at $2,600.

Stolen property investigation and arrest reported in Page County

Sheriff’s officials in Page County are asking for the public’s help in solving a theft. Deputies responded July 21st, to a report about property stolen from 2095 B Avenue. An investigation determined that sometime during the last ten days, unknown persons entered the property and took several tires and rims, a carburetor, a gas powered two man post hole auger, and an electric winch. Anyone with information about the theft, is asked to contact the Page County Sheriff’s Office, or their local law enforcement agency.

The Sheriff’s Office says also, 51-year old Terry E. Flowers, Sr., of Omaha, was arrested Sunday afternoon following a traffic stop for speeding. Flowers was wanted on a warrant out of Pottawattamie County for Operating a motor vehicle without owners consent. The man was unable to post a $2000 bond and was transported to the Page County Jail for holding until Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office personnel could transport him to their jail.

In addition to speeding, Flowers was cited for Failure to have a valid driver’s license.

Mo. man hurt in Page County crash

An accident Monday evening in Page County resulted in non-life threatening injuries to a man from Missouri. Sheriff Lyle Palmer says 41-year old Benjamin Green, of Jefferson City, MO., was transported to the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital following the crash that happened at around 5:30-p.m., on the north edge of Shenandoah.

Green was traveling north on Highway 48 when he lost control of his 1997 Jeep Cherokee, which entered the east ditch. Shenandoah Police assisted sheriff’s deputies at the scene.
