July 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers said in a news release this (Thursday) morning, his officers were kept busy overnight dealing with an incident involving knives and a stun gun, and a second incident resulting in a police officer being assaulted.

At around 8:30-p.m., Wednesday, Clarinda Police responded to a 911 call of a domestic fight with weapons involved, at the Parkview Apartments on E. Main Street. Following an investigation, Officers arrested 27-year old Sara Ann Billie, for alleging assaulting 29-year old Lovelle Joseph Ward, and threatening Ward with a knife. Billie and Ward live together in one of the apartments.

Ward also allegedly displayed and threatened Billie with a stun gun during the altercation. Billie was arrested for aggravated domestic assault, while Ward was arrested for aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon. Billie was being held in the Page County Jail without bond, while Ward’s bond was set at $2,000.

And, at around 12:15-a.m. today (Thursday), Clarinda Police responded to a 911 call about a domestic altercation occurring at a residence in the 700 block of S. 18th Street, where property was being damaged. When officers arrived they learned that one of the parties involved in the incident, 38-year old Troy Lee Landess, of Clarinda, had left the home prior to officers arriving. Officers found Landess at his home on W. Logan Street. When they confronted him,  Landess allegedly became combative with the officers, and used his fist to strike one officer in the head. The officer did not require medical attention.

Landess was arrested for interference with official acts by resisting arrest and disorderly conduct and additional charges are pending. He was later released on a recognizance bond in order to seek medical treatment for injuries Landess may have sustained earlier in the evening, for allegedly hitting a window with his fist.

Reports concerning both incidents have been forwarded to the offices of Page County Attorney Carl M. Sonksen for review and the filing of formal charges.

Death of Iowan acquitted in child’s slaying ruled accident

News

July 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CHEROKEE, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have ruled that the death of an Iowa man acquitted in the slaying of a 2-year-old girl in 2000 was an accident. The Sioux City Journal reports that the Iowa medical examiner’s office says Jesse Wendelsdorf, of Cherokee, died of ethylene glycol poisoning. The chemical is the primary ingredient in antifreeze.

Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent Darrell Simmons says antifreeze was found near Wendelsdorf when he was found March 29. He died two days later at a Sioux City hospital. Simmons told the newspaper it’s nearly impossible to say whether Wendelsdorf wanted to kill himself – he left no note. Simmons says some people drink antifreeze to get drunk.

Wendelsdorf was acquitted of murder and sexual abuse charges in the January 2000 death of his girlfriend’s daughter.

Landspout tornadoes form over northern IA, Wednesday

News, Weather

July 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The National Weather Service says three short-lived, but highly visible landspout tornadoes touched-down across northern Iowa Wednesday afternoon and evening, as a line of thunderstorms slowly progressed southeast over the area. The tornadoes caused no reported structural or tree damage with only crop damage being reported.

The first report of a tornado came in from Kossuth County, where a small and brief landspout touched down five-miles west/northwest of Algona, at around 5:15-p.m. A funnel cloud was also seen going up and down toward the ground 5-miles west of Algona, a few minutes later.

In Winnebago County, a funnel cloud was reported 4 miles west/northwest of Scarville, at around 6-p.m. About 12 minutes later, multiple social media pictures showed the funnel extending close to, if not touching, the ground in the same area.

In Humboldt County, a funnel cloud was seen forming half-way to the ground, two-miles west/southwest of Bode. A moment later, the same twister briefly touched down.

Unidentified chemical rains down on eastern IA community

Ag/Outdoor, News

July 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

MARION, Iowa (AP) – Authorities say an unidentified chemical has rained down on a northeast Marion neighborhood. Several people in the eastern Iowa town  called 911 Tuesday night after noticing a white substance on vehicles and houses. No injuries have been reported. Officials initially thought the substance may be a weed killer accidentally dropped by a crop-duster. But Marion Fire Chief Deb Krebill said Wednesday afternoon the substance may be a fungicide that’s also sprayed on crops.

Iowa State Extension agronomist Meghan Anderson says that, to be extra cautious, people in the area should destroy any produce in their gardens.  Authorities are still investigating.

Sanders delegates from Iowa complain they’re treated like ‘ignorant children’ at DNC

News

July 28th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Iowa delegates at the Democratic National Convention had an emotional morning meeting on Wednesday. Ingrid Olson, of Council Bluffs ,stepped up to speak. Olson’s a Bernie Sanders delegate. She offered the Clinton backers in the room some advice: quit telling the Sanders crowd to vote for Hillary Clinton because she’s not Donald Trump. “Please give messages of why we should come together with you,” Olson said. “…We can bring our party together, but it starts with us here and we have to take that home.”

Rebecca Mueller, a Bernie Sanders delegate from Muscatine, was next. “What I want you guys to understand on the Hillary Clinton side, and the party establishment, is that unity is not asking us to remove our Bernie buttons,” Mueller said. As Mueller continued, her voice cracked and she cried. “Do not silence us,” she said. “…You listen first and then you say: ‘What are the barriers that I can bring down?’ And the way that you’re going to bring us together is you listen first.”

Iowa Democratic Party chairwoman Andy McGuire was standing right beside Mueller and offered this reply: “We’re going to listen.” Mueller said she’d been listening to convention speakers — and learning things about Hillary Clinton she’d never heard before. “I did not know that she was on the pavement, just like I am, just like all these Bernie delegates out here and so many of the others,” Mueller said. “But I learned that her story is actually so similar — so similar, you guys — to our story.”

Jennifer Gernhart of Fort Dodge, another Sanders delegate, aired another grievance. No Sanders backer was invited to announce Iowa’s results during the convention roll call Tuesday night. Instead, four Clinton backers did it. “We wanted to stand next to you. It was our victory, too,” Gernhart said. “We’re all the same party.” Gernhart suggested the youthful Sanders crowd was being treated like “ignorant children.”

Iowa Democratic Party staffers defended the move to exclude Sanders backers from Iowa’s iconic “roll call” moment. Three of the participants were elected party leaders. The fourth was a Clinton delegate, because Clinton won Iowa’s Caucuses. This debate could be a harbinger of party infighting ahead. Sanders supporters believe they’ve secured a slim majority of slots on the Iowa Democratic Party’s state central committee.
