Trump lays out Branstad’s to-do list with China

News

December 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

About five-thousand people celebrated in Des Moines last (Thursday) night with President-elect Donald Trump. “I’m here today for one main reason: to say ‘Thank you’ to the great, great people of Iowa,” Trump said, and the crowd cheered. “You went out and you pounded, I mean, pounded the pavement.”

Trump touted his 10-point win in Iowa as “a lot more” than was expected. “Just to go into this for a second, so we won almost every single county in this state,” Trump said. “…We won one county that wasn’t won since Dwight D. Eisenhower. Anybody know the name of that county?” And a few people in the crowd yelled Dubuque.

Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win Dubuque County since 1956. Trump spoke for about 45 minutes, promising to pursue a “buy American, hire American” agenda as president, with tax reform and the repeal of ObamaCare as top agenda items. “I think you’ll be liking some of the things we’ll be putting forward in the not-too-distant future,” Trump said. “Do you know what I mean? Yes? Do you know what I mean?”

Trump also got cheers from the crowd when he asked if they liked his cabinet choices so far — including his decision to send Iowa Governor Terry Branstad to China as U.S. Ambassador. “I can’t tell you how many people wanted that position. You know, it’s not bad. You go over there. You live like a king,” Trump said. “But he’s not looking to live like a king. He and his beautiful wife came to my office the other day. They’re willing to work on that relationship.”

Trump cited Branstad’s long-term relationship with the president of China. And Trump offered a litany of thorny issues Branstad will be charged with tackling with the Chinese. Trump complained that China is manipulating the value of its currency. Trump accused China of the “massive theft of intellectual property” from U.S. companies. And Trump blasted China for “not helping with the menace of North Korea.”

“They haven’t played by the rules and I know it’s time that they’re going to start. They’ve going to start. They’ve got to,” Trump said, to cheers. “…We’ve got to play by the rules, folks.” Trump introduced Branstad to the crowd. “He’s going to do so great. With Terry on our side, I know we will succeed in bringing our jobs back and I also know the China that’s been so tough and so competitive and frankly, dealing with people that didn’t get it, but I’ll tell you we will have mutual respect and China’s going to benefit and America’s going to benefit,” Trump said, “and Terry’s going to lead the way.”

Branstad offered very brief remarks. “It has been a great honor and privilege to serve the people of this state and thanks to our great new president who’s going to make America great again, I am very proud to serve America in this very important role,” Branstad said. “Thank you very much.”

Vice President-elect Mike Pence introduced Trump, noting last night’s rally on December 8th marked the one-month anniversary of Trump’s victory on November 8th.

NW Iowa police officer fatally shoots passenger in SUV

News

December 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

A Sioux City Police officer shot and killed a passenger in an SUV during a traffic stop Wednesday night. The officer is not being identified, but Police Chief Doug Young says the officer has been with the force for three years. The SUV was being driven by 39-year-old Melinda Benoit of Sioux City, but Young says the officer also checked on the passenger, 36-year-old Daniel Riedmann.

“It was determined that Daniel Riedmann had an outstanding warrant from the State of Iowa and there was an officer alert that Mr. Riedmann could be armed and dangerous,” Young said. The officer felt threatened when he re-approached the vehicle, according to Young. “Mr. Riedmann did not comply with the officer’s demands to exit the vehicle. The vehicle was locked and as they were making their demands there were some furtive movements in the vehicle, at which time the officer stepped back and discharged his service weapon striking Mr. Riedmann,” Young said at a news conference Thursday.

Police recovered a gun from the SUV. The incident was captured on the police vehicle’s dash cam and Young said that video will eventually be released. The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, as the incident is under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Riedmann, who is from Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, was wanted in Iowa for a probation violation. His record included convictions on felony charges of second-degree theft and possession of a controlled substance.

Harlan Police warn residents about gift/package theft

News

December 9th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

The holiday season is upon us and a lot of people are ordering their gifts on-line. This means lots of deliveries to residential areas around town. The deliveries are most often made while you’re at work and your kids are at school, nobody is home. The Harlan Police Department say that makes it extremely easy to have your deliveries stolen from right off your front steps.

Authorities said on the Harlan Police Dept.’s social media page, that they “Have had at least 3 confirmed reports of packages being stolen, all ready, this year and a few more weeks of deliveries yet to be made before Christmas.” Officials advise you to “Please try and set up delivery times when someone will be home or have your packages delivered to a neighbor or your place of business, if you’re able to do so.” They say “A few extra precautions will ensure that your loved ones will receive the gift that you have picked out for them.”

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:45 a.m. CST

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Protesters fighting the Dakota Access pipeline are getting conflicting messages from the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. The tribal chairman tells demonstrators that it’s time to leave their camp and go home. Another leader implores them to stay through the bitter North Dakota winter. The rival requests show how the camp’s purpose has widened beyond the original intent of protecting the tribe’s drinking water into a broader stand for Native American rights.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — For six years as lieutenant governor, Kim Reynolds has traveled throughout Iowa alongside Gov. Terry Branstad, but rarely has she been in the spotlight. That’s about to change as Branstad has accepted an appointment as U.S. ambassador to China, giving Reynolds the opportunity to set priorities for the state. Those who have worked with Reynolds describe her as an enthusiastic and genuine person, but they’re not sure what to expect from her as governor.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Peter Jok scored 23 points and Iowa upset 25-ranked Iowa State 78-64 on Thursday, snapping a three-game losing streak against its instate rival. Isaiah Moss had 14 points to help the Hawkeyes (5-5) to their first victory over a Power Five opponent this season.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police video shows an unarmed black driver struggling with an Iowa officer and a police dog before the officer shoots the motorist, paralyzing him. Driver Jerime Mitchell manages to get back inside his truck, with Cedar Rapids officer Lucas Jones clinging to him and then shooting him after the truck starts to roll. The dashcam video released Thursday seems unlikely to resolve a debate over whether Jones acted appropriately in the Nov. 1 shooting.

Reynolds speaks as she steps off the plane

Iowa’s next governor says she has prepared for the responsibilities ahead. A reporter and photographer for a central Iowa television station staked out the Des Moines airport last (Wednesday) night, catching Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds as she returned from a family vacation in Mexico. Reynolds was interviewed live on the “Local 5 News” at 10 o’clock on W-O-I Television.

“It’s great to be back in Iowa and I’m really, really excited and proud of Governor Branstad — first of all — for this new assignment and this new role,” Reynolds told WOI. Reynolds says no one is more qualified than Branstad to serve as ambassador to China. As for HER new role as Iowa’s first female governor, Reynolds told W-O-I:

“I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside Governor Branstad for six years now and I have had the opportunity to learn from the best governor in the nation,” Reynolds told WOI’s reporter. State officials have not announced when the transfer of power from Branstad to Reynolds will occur.

Branstad must win confirmation from the U.S. Senate for his new posting in China. That senate vote would take place sometime AFTER Donald Trump is sworn in as president on January 20th. Both Branstad and Reynolds are expected to appear with Trump tonight (Thursday) at Trump’s “Thank You Tour” rally stop in Des Moines.
