March 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Sioux City School District’s chief financial officer has been placed on paid administrative leave for reasons the district won’t disclose, just weeks before next year’s school budget is due.

District spokeswoman Alison Benson tells the Sioux City Journal that CFO John Chalstrom was placed on paid administrative leave Feb. 13. Neither she nor school board president Mike Krysl would discuss why, saying it was a personnel matter.

The move comes as Superintendent Paul Gausman is being considered for the superintendent position at Nebraska’s largest school district, Omaha Public Schools.
State law requires Iowa public schools to adopt their budgets by April 15. Recent school board meetings indicate the district is facing a budget shortfall.

‘Bridges of Madison County’ author Robert James Waller dies

News

March 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) – Author Robert James Waller, whose best-selling, bittersweet 1992 novel “The Bridges of Madison County” was turned into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood and a Broadway musical, has died in Texas, according to his literary agency. He was 77.

Lucy Childs of Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency said Friday that Waller died either Thursday or early Friday. Childs did not know the cause but said the author had been ill. In “Bridges,” which Waller famously wrote in 11 days, a photographer spends four days romancing a war bride from Italy married to a no-nonsense Iowa farmer.

Waller’s novel reached No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list and stayed on it for over three years; the Eastwood-directed 1995 movie grossed $182 million worldwide.

IDALS & NWS need precipitation observers!

News, Weather

March 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s (IDALS) State Climatology Office and the National Weather Service (NWS) are recruiting volunteer precipitation observers across Iowa to participate in the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow network, known as “CoCoRaHS” (pronounced “KO-ko-rozz”).

Weather observers are needed everywhere, but with the most critical needs are in 16 counties: Pocahontas, Worth, Wright, Allamakee, Bremer, Calhoun, Greene, Shelby, Audubon, Cedar, Adair, Adams, Decatur, Monroe, Louisa and Davis counties.

All that is needed to participate is an interest in the weather, a four inch diameter rain gage, a suitable location to set up the gauge and access to the internet. All data collected is immediately available for free online and is routinely used for flood forecasting, drought assessment, news media stories, scientific research and general weather interest.

Much more information about the network is available on the CoCoRaHS web site at www.cocorahs.org. The website includes information on how to join, where to obtain your rain gauge and how to accurately measure and report rain and snow. There is no cost involved in joining or participating in the CoCoRaHS network other than the need for the four inch diameter rain gauge.

The network was established by the Colorado Climate Center in 1998 and has now spread to all fifty states and Canada. Iowa joined this volunteer network in 2007 and now has over 300 registered CoCoRaHS observers across the state. However, more observers are needed to better document the amount and variability of rain and snow across Iowa.

State Climatologist Harry Hillaker says “Whatever comes our way in 2017, the weather observations obtained by this network can be of great benefit in obtaining a clearer picture of Iowa’s weather.”

Famed TV home decorator headlines Iowa home improvement expo

A popular interior designer on cable T-V home decorating shows is in central Iowa this weekend, offering tips to spruce up our rooms, houses and lives. Vern Yip may be best known for his appearances on T-L-C’s “Trading Spaces” as well as on H-G-T-V. Yip suggests making a list of long-term goals for your home, much like you would make long-term plans for your money or retirement.

“Whether you’re renting or if you’ve purchased, if you live in a tiny studio apartment or if you live in a 50,000 square foot mansion, these basic rules of design apply universally to everybody of all budgets,” Yip says. “These rules really are designed to help you transform your house into even more of a home.” Designers frequently encounter people who are reluctant to take the leap, either due to the money involved, the work required, or they’re just averse to change.

“I do understand that people suffer from design paralysis,” Yip says. “It’s a big deal, a much bigger deal than purchasing a sweater or a new pair of shoes. When you buy a sofa or repaint your walls, it’s a pretty big investment financially and also an investment in your time. You want to get it right.” The 48-year-old Yip was born in Hong Kong and runs a design studio in Atlanta. His newest book, “Vern Yip’s Design Wise: Your Smart Guide to a Beautiful Home,” provides a pathway to improving the appearance, the efficiency and the comfort level of your space.

“I understand why people are hesitant but I want your home to feel like a physical manifestation of you,” Yip says. “When you get it right, you should be able to walk through that front door with the biggest smile on your face, more so than any five-star resort.” Yip is appearing at the Des Moines Home and Outdoor Living Show, running today (Friday) through Sunday at the Iowa Events Center near downtown Des Moines.

On Street parking ban expected for Clarinda this weekend

News, Weather

March 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers says with predicted snow fall amounts being difficult to forecast and snowfall amounts and computer models varying widely, he is going to err on the side of caution, and anticipates an on street parking ban to be taking effect in Clarinda sometime early Saturday morning.

Brothers said “Our snow emergency ordinance is quite simple. Once two inches of snow accumulates no on street parking is allowed. The parking ban remains in effect until the snow ceases to fall and the public works department snow plow operators have plowed the streets from curb to curb. Vehicles not moved are subject to being towed and parking tickets being issued to the vehicle’s registered owner.”

Clarinda he says, has not enacted a snow parking ban this winter season, therefore he’s anticipating a large number of violations. The key, is to stay up-to-date on the latest forecast and remember to move your vehicle off the streets when two-inches of snow has accumulated.

Time to change time again: Daylight saving time returns

News

March 10th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

WASHINGTON (AP) – It’s time to change time again. Daylight Saving Time (DST) returns this weekend in the United States. The short-term pain: Lose an hour of sleep Saturday night. The long-term gain: Enjoy more evening light in the months ahead, when the weather warms and you want to be outdoors.

Advance your clocks by 60 minutes before tucking in, so you’re not caught off-guard Sunday morning. For most of the U.S., the change officially starts Sunday at 2 a.m. local time. You may want to install fresh batteries in smoke detectors and radios, and repeat that when standard time returns Nov. 5.

No time change is observed in Hawaii, most of Arizona, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Marianas.
