Firefighters in Atlantic were called to the scene of a garage fire this morning. The department was dispatched at 5-a.m. to the scene 801 Walnut Street, where the garage was shared with a home on 8^th Street. Rachelle Andersons’ fiance’ Arthur Davis Jr., had got up to let the dogs outside when he noticed smoke in driveaway and a glow.

Atlantic Fire Chief Mark McNees said When firefighters arrived the structure was pretty much fully engulfed and was impinging on the house which was only about three-feet away.

The blaze was extinguished by around 5:14-a.m. Rachelle Anderson, who lives in the home next to the garage on the east side told KJAN News she was asleep when Art ran in to tell her to “Get up, the garage is on fire. I [went] out the door and it was all in flames. We went back inside to get our three dogs.” She said also there was a more than one-half full propane tank inside the garage.

A few vehicles that were parked outside were moved to a parking lot across the street. Firefighters remained on the scene until about 6:20-a.m. while extinguishing some hot spots. The cause of the blaze remained under investigation.

Sioux City animal control found more than 40 cats in a home Friday after getting a tip. Megan Lalk says they found the animals in horrible conditions with an overwhelming smell. “I was the one that originally went out there, and even just walking up to the house, the smell was horrific,” Lalk says. She says the house was posted with a 24-hour notice and once that was up, they went in and started removing the cats.

Lalk says two people were living in the home that was covered in waste. “There were a lot of the cats that were sick. And when they are in that environment and you take them out into the fresh air — their upper respiratory goes crazy — just because they are used to breathing in the ammonia and all the stuff that’s in a house in that condition,” Lalk says.

She says when they originally went in they found 41 cats, but found some more when they checked again. Some of the cats died after being rescued and others are being treated for a variety of health issues. She says they try to keep the sick ones separated from the rest of the animals, because they are holding them now until the case makes it way through the legal process.

She says they left traps in the house to try and catch at least five more cats. Investigators are still working on the case and say charges are possible against the two people living in the home.

A woman from Adair County was arrested Saturday night in Adams County, on an OWI charge. 62-year old Mary Louise Novy, of Greenfield, was arrested following a traffic stop at around 9:46-p.m., Saturday, in Corning. Novy was taken into custody for OWI/1st offense. After Deputies located an open container of beer in the center console of her vehicle, Novy was cited for Open Container. Her bond was set at $1,300.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — A once crumbling bakery in Waterloo that for decades produced Hostess Wonder Bread is now opening as a brewery, restaurant and distribution center. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that SingleSpeed Brewing Co. opened Thursday for a soft opening. The facility can hold 500 and will feature a full menu to accompany the ten beers on tap.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police have arrested a man in an early-morning stabbing death. Police say officers were called just before 2 a.m. Sunday to investigate a stabbing and found a 40-year-old man with a wound to his chest. The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. He was identified as 40-year-old Des Moines resident Kendall Moore. On Sunday morning, police say investigators charged 23-year-old Corderro Alton Laurence with first-degree murder. It was the 12th homicide in Des Moines so far this year.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Legislature has adjourned a legislative session marked by a remarkable conservative shift that included passage of measures limiting public union power, expanding gun rights and enacting new abortion restrictions. Republicans, who hold majorities in both chambers, finalized votes Saturday on the roughly $7.2 billion state budget following a series of private meetings that began nearly 24 hours earlier.

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers says five female students who absconded from the Clarinda Academy Sunday evening were apprehended about an hour later. The initial report of their having left the facility for At-Risk and Delinquent Youth came in at around 9:20-p.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The blue tutu and diamond necklace that Prudence was wearing helped win over the judges at this year’s Beautiful Bulldog contest at Drake University. The 2 1/2-year-old bulldog owned by Angela and Tom Miller of Des Moines won the contest on Sunday. The tongue-in-cheek contest is the opening event of the Drake Relays, a prestigious track and field meet to be held at Drake Stadium.

Drake athletic director Sandy Hatfield, who served as a judge, says Prudence is “just gorgeous.” Student body President Thalia Anguiana was another judge. She says there’s just something about Prudence’s face that made her beautiful.

More than 1,000 people watched the contest as 38 bulldogs competed. Another 4,000 watched live online.

Sheriff’s officials in Adams County report the arrest at around 8-a.m. Sunday, of 18-year old Noah Wardlow, of Corning. Wardlow was charged with Felony Criminal Mischief, OWI, Reckless Driving and Failure to Maintain Control. His bond was set at $6,300.
