A late spring heat wave is bringing summer-like hot weather to the Hawkeye State. National Weather Service meteorologist Cory Martin says most of Iowa will see highs in the 90s the next five straight days. “We’re going to see temperatures that are more typical of the latter half of summer,” Martin says. “We’re going to see highs approaching triple-digits in some part so the state and when you combine that with the humidity we’re expecting, we’ll have heat index values probably exceeding 100 across much of the area, especially Saturday and Sunday afternoons.”

So far, no watches, warnings or advisories have been issued in Iowa as part of the steamy forecast. “For a heat advisory to be issued, we’d be expecting heat indices of 105 degrees or greater and that’s not likely at this point,” Martin says. “However, with the long duration of the heat expected, it still could be dangerous for those that will be exposed to it for prolonged periods of time.”

Reminders are being issued for people with pets or livestock to make sure the animals have plenty of water and shade. These highs, Martin says, are very unseasonable.  “Normal temperatures for this time of year would be into the low 80s,” Martin says. “What we’re going to be seeing is close to record values. Most places, our record high temperatures for this time of year would be in the upper 90s to near 100-degrees, so we’re right in that territory.”

Highs in Des Moines the next three days are estimated at 99, 99 and 98 degrees. The Polk County Health Department is warning people to take it easy if they’ll be outside, wear light-colored and light-weight clothing, take frequent breaks and drink plenty of water. According to the calendar, summer doesn’t even officially arrive until June 21st.

“It is early but it’s definitely not unprecedented,” Martin says. “Our record highs are right around 100 degrees for this time of year so we’ve seen it before. Again, it is hot for this time of year. We usually don’t start talking about triple-digit heat for this area until we get into July and August.”

Forecasters say highs aren’t expected to be back around normal again until possibly Wednesday.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports a Carson man already being held in the Pott. County Jail, was served with a warrant for Parole Violation due to new evidence. 21-year old Schuyler Mitchell Heisser, Jr., was read his rights and returned to Corrections staff for processing into the facility.

And, a woman from Minden was arrested at around 9-p.m. Thursday, for OWI/1st offense. 60-year old Cindy Ilene Kallsen was arrested following an investigation into a reported property damage accident involving a possibly intoxicated driver, at 33028 Highway 6.

Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County report a Cass County man was arrested Thursday afternoon for incident exposure. A Sheriff’s Deputy was on patrol at around 8:40-a.m., when he was dispatched to 302 N. Highway Street in Oakland after an employee of the Farm Service Cooperative in Oakland reported an incident of indecent exposure.

Arrested at around 1:30-p.m. in the vicinity of Linden and Main Streets, was 61-year old Charles Collins Cutler, of Marne.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says no injuries were reported, but two people were arrested, after a semi rear-ended a 2000 Chevy Suburban a little after 3-a.m. Thursday, on eastbound Interstate 80. The accident happened about two miles west of the Anita Exit (at the 68 mile-marker).

Officials say a 2011 Freightliner semi driven by 43-year old Jason Jochumsen, of Urbandale, ran into the Suburban owned by 51-year old Calvin John Coohey, of East Dubuque, IL. Damage from the crash totaled $8,000.

During investigation of the accident, the deputy at the scene could smell the odor of marijuana coming from the Suburban.  A search of the vehicle was conducted and multiple large bags and jars of marijuana were located, along with numerous drug paraphernalia items.  The Sheriff’s Office then arrested Calvin John Coohey and a passenger in his vehicle, 20-year old Sophia Abigail Stevens, of Loveland, OH, on felony charges that include Possession with Intent to Deliver Marijuana and a Drug Tax Stamp Violation, and an Aggravated Misdemeanor charge of Prohibited Acts.  They were brought to the Cass County jail and released later that day on their own recognizances.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Polk County Sheriff’s Office says it is investigating one of its officers for social media postings deriding Islam and calling the religion an “evil ideology.” The Des Moines Register reports that a graphic on the Facebook page of Sgt. Dan Charleston said it included “verses from the Quran that inspire terrorists” and that Charleston accompanied the graphic with a comment: “No reasoning with this evil ideology.” The posting has been removed.

A phone listed for Charleston rang busy during several calls Friday. Department spokesman Rich Blaylock said “the Polk County Sheriff’s Office is very concerned with the messages posted on social media and are conducting an internal investigation.”

Charleston has twice run unsuccessfully for sheriff. He’s been a member of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for 19 years.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office today (Friday) released a report on arrests that took place from May 19^th through June 6^th. In their report, authorities say among those arrested was 29-year old Cody Johnson, of Marne, who turned himself-in to the Taylor County Law Enforcement Center May 19^th, on charges of felony 2^nd Degree Burglary and Tampering with a Motor Vehicle. His bond was set at $10,000.

On June 3^rd, 30-year old Josh Green, of Shenandoah, was arrested in Bedford for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. His bond was set at $300. That same day, 20-year old Cheyana Brownfield, of Blanchard, was arrested on an assault charge. Her bond was also set at $300.

On June 4^th, two people were arrested on drug charges at the Lake of Three Fires near Bedford: 18-year old Cole Nothwehr, of Shendandoah, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. His bond was set at $1,000. And, 24-year old Payne Dotson, of Braddyville, was arrested for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. His bond was set at $300.

On June 5^th, a 14-year old was arrested at the Lenox Pool for carrying a stun gun. He was charged with Carrying a Dangerous Weapon and referred to Juvenile Court. On June 6^th,  79-year old Ronald Bradly, of Bedford, was arrested for Violation of a No Contact Order, 23-year old Keegan Bintz, of New Market, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault, and 53-year old Regina Alvarez, of Sibley, was arrested for Assault.

Officials with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office report this (Friday) morning, that “Due to a water line break within the Jail facility, the Pottawattamie County Jail Administrative Offices will be closed today. Due to the closure, there will be no visitation at the facility. It is anticipated that the office will reopen on Monday June 12th for normal business.”

In an update to our story first posted Wednesday morning on KJAN.com’s News page, authorities have charged a Council Bluffs man accused of spanking his 2-year-old so hard she was left with several bruises. Court records say 25-year-old Ryan Rapier is charged with felony child endangerment resulting in injury.

The girl’s godmother had noticed bruises on the girl’s face, legs and bottom, and she told investigators that Rapier had said the girl had fallen out of her crib. Rapier told investigators that he’d spanked the girl twice Monday because she kept getting out of her crib and throwing things around the bedroom. He said he lost his temper and didn’t mean to hurt the child.
