A Bloomberg report out of Washington, D.C. indicates an Iowan who’s run unsuccessfully for statewide office twice will be the new chief of staff for the U.S. Attorney General. Matthew Whitaker of Clive was the G-O-P nominee for state treasurer in 2002. President Bush named Whitaker the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa in 2004 and Whitaker held that post for five and a half years.

In 2014, Whitaker was one of five Republicans who ran for the U.S. Senate, the year Joni Ernst won the G-O-P primary and the general election. Whitaker, who is 47 years old, played football at the University of Iowa and earned an MBA and a law degree from the school as well.

Two other high-ranking Republican politicians are partners in Whitaker’s Des Moines law firm. Attorney Jack Whitver is the president of the Iowa Senate and attorney Chris Hagenow is the majority leader in the Iowa House.

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — Defense attorneys are asking a judge to dismiss a charge against reality TV star Chris Soules for leaving the scene of a fatal accident in Iowa. Soules starred on the television show “The Bachelor” two years ago. The local farmer is accused of driving a truck that hit a farm tractor near his hometown of Aurora in April that killed the tractor’s driver. Soules was in the courtroom Thursday when his attorneys said they would formally ask for the charge to be dismissed at a hearing next month.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Police say a Waterloo man who called 911 in July to report the drowning of a child in a bathtub has been charged in the child’s death. Police say an autopsy showed 4-year-old Jaheem Harris had been beaten to death. The Courier reports that 23-year-old Walter Cordell Williams has been charged with first-degree murder in the child’s death. He was arrested Thursday and his bond set at $1 million.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Repairs to a nature trail in Iowa have been delayed after the Federal Emergency Management Agency put a hold on a funding request. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that FEMA’s decision to halt the $380,000 request comes in the wake of severe hurricane damage in Texas and Florida. Blackhawk County Conservation Director Mike Hendrickson says the county was notified of the hold Friday. Hendrickson said it’s not a surprise that only critical needs are receiving funding at this time.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A judge won’t let a Des Moines woman use Iowa’s new “stand your ground” defense against charges that she killed her stepfather. The law says a person doesn’t have to retreat before using deadly force if the person thinks his or her life is being threatened. Sera Alexander’s lawyer had argued that Alexander should be allowed to use the law although it took effect nearly two months after Anthony Hartmann was slain.

An Iowa State Patrol pursuit that began near Avoca a little after 10-a.m., Thursday, ended with the suspect losing control of the vehicle, which ended up in a cornfield just outside of Woodbine. Pursuit of the black Dodge Durango with what was believed to be occupied by two black males, began on eastbound on Interstate 80 near Avoca, after the driver refused to stop for a speeding citation. According to Iowa State Patrol Trooper M.J. Kober, the vehicle exited the interstate and proceeded northbound on Highway 59 into Shelby County. Kober said the trooper lost sight of vehicle, but it was later seen in Harlan.

According to Kober and a press release from the Iowa State Patrol, as the vehicle entered the south side of Denison, it turned onto Highway 30. Numerous officers attempted to deploy stop sticks during the pursuit, all of which were unsuccessful. From Denison, the suspect traveled south through Dow City and Dunlap and, at approximately one mile east of Woodbine, the Durango went off the road to the left, struck a corn field and came to a stop in the ditch.

One male subject was placed under arrest. The driver suffered injuries during the accident and was transported to CHI Missouri Valley Hospital, then later to Mercy Hospital in Omaha. Law enforcement on the scene did search the cornfield for a possible second suspect, but Kober said no one was found in the field.

Assisting the Iowa State Patrol were: Harlan police , the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department, Denison Police, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Iowa DOT Enforcement, Iowa DCI, Woodbine Police, Woodbine Fire and Rescue, Harrison County Conservation and the ISP Air Wing.

The investigation is ongoing.

The Cass County Auditor’s Office reports two men from Wiota have filed to run for City office. Ford Lillard has filed nomination papers to run for Mayor. And, Jeff Lillard has filed to run for a City Council seat. They join the list of other, previously announced candidates who are in the running for the Nov. 7th City Elections in Cass County. The deadline to file nomination papers is 5-p.m., Sept. 21st.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest Tuesday evening of a man on a burglary charge. 40-year old Shawn Jason Parmenter, of Creston, was arrested at the Union County Law Enforcement Center, for Burglary in the 3rd degree.  Parmenter was later released from the Union County Jail on $5,000 bond.

Building age and space are making for cramped quarters for both Adair Volunteer Fire and EMS personnel, as well as their equipment. A social media effort kicked-off in August to try and resolve those problems through a fundraiser. Their goal is to raise $170,000. Adair Fire Chief Kelby Smith says their current building is actually two different buildings in one. One side was built back in the 1930’s, while the other was constructed in the 1970’s.

The current building is 120-by 40-feet, and has 13-foot doors. The south side of the current building has issues with mold, and failing stucco, while the north side is nearing middle age, and isn’t big enough for the newer equipment. Smith says “trucks aren’t getting any smaller as the years go on,” and the building is aging to the point where it’s putting the equipment at risk of functioning improperly when it’s needed most. He says for instance, that the building isn’t efficient at keeping fire trucks – which hold water – from freezing up, because they let a lot of outside air in, through creaks and leaks.

The department and the Adair Fire Board have decided to just replace the entire building with a new one, which ideally, would be 120-feet long by 60-feet wide. Smith says it will have three 16-by 13-foot doors, an open concept so people can see from one end to the other, a kitchen,  meeting room and offices, and updated restrooms. Smith says also, they’d like to hold, or help host more community events in the new building, and have rooms to keep their medical and other supplies under lock and key.

The Adair Volunteer Fire Department serves the City of Adair and the surrounding rural areas. Their staff roster includes 30 firefighter/EMT’s, and their current facility houses one ambulance, two pumper trucks, one each Tanker, Grass unit and Crash unit, as well as a grain bin rescue trailer.

A Montgomery County man was injured during a single-vehicle rollover accident Thursday morning, in Pottawattamie County. According to the Sheriff’s Department, 20-year old Luis Rodriguez-Ibara, of Red Oak, was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic for treatment of unknown/possible injuries,

The accident happened at around 5:23-a.m., when the 2005 Nissan Ultima Rodriguez-Ibara was driving left the road off 510th Street and ended-up on its top, in a ditch. The crash remains under investigation.

A regular meeting of the Adair County Board of Supervisors will be held 9-a.m. Friday, at the courthouse in Greenfield. On their agenda, is discussion on the following: Computer bids, with regard to the County Recorder’s Office; Two representatives from MATURA will talk about the Neighborhood Center; Representatives with Chamber Mainstreet and General Relief will discuss with the Board a Courtyard Use Permit; The Adair County Treasurer will present resolutions for property tax abatements; and Sheriff Jeff Vandewater will discuss County Law Enforcement matters.

The last part of the meeting features County Engineer Nick Kauffmann, who will present a materials bid for a Local Option Sales Tax funded bridge project. He’ll also discuss and/or act on Credit Card Agreements for Secondary Road Employees, the Fiscal Year 2017 Annual D.O.T report, and present his regular report on department maintenance and activities.

The Iowa Department of Public Health is alerting Iowans to marketing phone calls offering prescriptions for pain relief creams or braces/devices. According to Iowa Board of Pharmacy Director Andrew Funk, third-party marketing firms are calling Iowans and asking if they are experiencing any pain; for instance, joint or back pain. In some cases, the call is initiated based on an online survey completed by the consumer.

As the conversation goes on, the sales representative collects the patient’s date of birth, prescriber’s name and, in some instances, their city of birth (which, in-turn may be used to “guess” the patient’s social security number in an attempt to obtain the patient’s third-party insurance information). They are then informed that a prescription topical cream or prescription brace or device may help alleviate the pain/discomfort.

The patient agrees (but isn’t always sure what they’re agreeing to) and the marketing firm sends a prescription request to the prescriber to sign, which gets routed to a pharmacy with which the marketing company has a contract, and is likely completely unknown to the patient (historically, these have been pharmacies outside Iowa). In many cases, the prescription drug has been pre-selected by an employee of the marketing firm who likely is not a health care practitioner.

Typically, these prescriptions are submitted to the patient’s insurance and oftentimes amount to tens of thousands of dollars. IDPH wants Iowans to know about this tactic and reminds them to be wary of divulging any personal information over the internet or phone (including date and city of birth). Patients should speak directly with their prescribers about effective pain relief solutions. Additionally, prescribers need to be diligent when reviewing prescription requests, especially for topical pain creams, braces or devices that come in via fax from a pharmacy out of state or unknown to the prescriber.

The Cass County Board of Supervisors will meet Friday at 8:30-a.m.  On the agenda for their session at the courthouse, is canvassing of the votes from Tuesday’s School Board Election. The Board will also discuss filling the vacancy position of County Attorney.

Cass County Attorney David Wiederstein resigned from his position in August, effective Jan. 1st. He did so after the Supervisors voted to make the position full-time. Cass County Auditor Dale Sunderman says whether a person is appointed or elected, the term will expire at the end of 2018. The position for the next four-year term beginning in January 2019, will appear on the 2018 Primary Election ballot.

If the Board chooses to appoint a county attorney, the public would have a 14-day window after appointment to submit a petition for a special election to fill the position. In other business, the Supervisors will act on approving a Resolution approving with Crow River Construction, contracts and bonds for a gray water transmission project, with regard to the Elite Octane Ethanol Plant project. And, a resolution approving an Easement Review and Purchase Agreement to acquire an easement for a gray water transmission pipe to cross railroad property of Hawkeye Land Company.
