Council Bluffs Police are investigating a shots fired incident. Authorities say that at around 8-a.m. today (Sunday), officers responded to several 911 calls of shots being fired in the 600 block of Stutsman. A white, possibly Chevy, pickup truck was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Upon arrival officers located several vehicles and a residence that had sustained damage. Officers checked the area and made contact with residents to ascertain if there was anyone injured. As of this time no injuries have been reported to police in reference to this incident.

The area was closed off to traffic while Council Bluffs Crime Lab processed the scene and collected evidence.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A round of elections in Iowa this month will ask some public sector workers whether they want to keep their unions or dismantle them. The elections are scheduled over a two-week period beginning Tuesday. They will be one of the biggest tests of labor strength in Iowa since a new law eliminated many collective bargaining rights for most public sector employees.

The law includes a provision requiring workers to vote periodically on their union representation. It counts non-participants as votes against the union. Union leaders argue the elections and the law aim to weaken workers’ rights. The president of the largest public workers union also says he’s concerned about the logistics of the elections, which will be held online and by phone.

The head of the agency overseeing the elections says the process will be efficient, fair and transparent.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A bankruptcy petition filed by a California-based developer of a 12-story historic art deco building in downtown Sioux City has been dismissed. The Sioux City Journal reports the move paves the way for foreclosure proceedings on the Badgerow Building to resume.

A federal judge in California on Wednesday granted Cedar Rapids Bank and Trust’s motion to dismiss the bankruptcy filing by Mako One Corp., of Carlsbad, California.

The bank filed for foreclosure on the Badgerow Building in April, saying Mako, its managing partner Bruce DeBolt and two other limited liability companies defaulted on a $6 million bond agreement to help finance work to renovate the building. The bank said at the time that it was owed more than $4.4 million.

The Badgerow Building was built in 1933 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Police in Red Oak report 37-year old Daniel Bruce Clemons, Junior, of Red Oak, was arrested at around 6:15-p.m. Saturday, for Simple Assault. Clemons, Jr. was taken into custody at the intersection of Eastern and Summit Streets in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred in the 200 block of East Nuckols Street. He was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a $300 bond.

Officials with the Iowa Department of Corrections in Davenport report 47-year old Christopher Barry Wheeler, who was convicted of Robbery 2nd Degree and Voluntary Absence in Scott County and Attempted Burglary and Forgery in Muscatine County, failed to report back to the Davenport Work Release/OWI Center as required, Saturday.

Wheeler is a 47-year-old white male, height 5’10”, and weighing 198 pounds. He was admitted to the work release facility on July 12, 2017.  Persons with information on Wheeler’s whereabouts should contact local police.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Davenport woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $150,000 from the School Nutrition Association of Iowa. The Quad-City Times reports that 74-year-old Norma Jean Adams pleaded guilty Friday to commission of an unlawful activity. Prosecutors say Adams was using the name Norma LaMantia while serving as the executive director of the nonprofit association. A state audit found that she had misused at least $169,000 over a five-year period.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City man convicted in August of attempted murder for firing more than a dozen shots at a Woodbury County sheriff’s deputy has been sentenced to 25 years in prison _ the maximum he could get. The Sioux City Journal reports that 25-year-old Melvin Spencer was sentenced Friday in Woodbury County District Court. Prosecutors say Spencer fired 16 shots at Deputy Mike Lenz on Feb. 26 after a vehicle chase. Lenz wasn’t hit, but at least five rounds struck his patrol vehicle.

DECORAH, Iowa (AP) — A Decorah man faces charges after authorities found dead feeder calves on his property. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that 51-year-old Craig Scott Underbakke was arrested on charges of livestock neglect and seven counts of failure to dispose of livestock. The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office investigated after receiving a report Tuesday about the conditions at Underbakke’s farm west of Burr Oak and found 24 dead feeder calves.

CLEAR LAKE, Iowa (AP) — Barrel Drive-In in Clear Lake, known for its broasted chicken and homemade root beer, has closed after nearly six decades, and some of the local are voicing their displeasure. Julie Pals is a local photographer who snapped pictures of the diner’s iconic barrel being hauled away Sept. 29. She tells the Globe Gazette that she’s sad about the diner closing and had been hoping it could be saved.

(Radio Iowa) — The deadline is approaching to submit nominations for hometown heroes from Iowa and Nebraska who will be recognized during the Hawkeyes-vs-Huskers football game next month. Tammy Lee, executive director of the North and Western Iowa chapter of the American Red Cross, says it’s become an annual tradition, singling out valuable local leaders in both states.

Lee says, “We’re looking for people who have given of themselves either in a lifesaving act or through service to their communities, gifts to others, that have been unrecognized largely.” She encourages residents in both states to fill out the simple online form and nominate someone for the award.

“We want you to look around to your friends and neighbors and see who is deserving of recognition,” Lee says. “If they’re selected, one person from Iowa, one person from Nebraska, they will be honored at the Heroes Game on the 24th of November.” That game will be played in Lincoln this year. Some of the previous years’ honorees have been recognized for heroic, life-saving acts.

Lee says, “We also have recognized folks who have taken on a number of children in their community, that have taken on special projects, that over time maybe haven’t done anything that would seem significant in terms of a single event, but people recognize they’re genuinely good people and that their community is a better place for having them in it.”

The Iowa and Nebraska heroes will receive tickets to the game at Memorial Stadium and on-field recognition. They will also have their names and hometowns inscribed on the Hy-Vee Heroes Game trophy. The entry deadline is October 23rd. The winners will be made public on or around November 20th. Nominations can be made at: www.redcross.org/iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Air travelers in Iowa and eastern Nebraska will soon see new nonstop flights offered to and from Philadelphia. American Airlines announced this week that it will add new routes from Des Moines International Airport and Eppley Airfield in Omaha to Philadelphia International Airport. The twice-daily flights will begin May 4.

Philadelphia International Airport is a hub for American, with many flights to countries around Europe. Frontier Airlines also announced last week it would offer a nonstop flight four times a week from Omaha to Philadelphia, starting April 9.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports a 2-vehicle accident on Interstate 29 on Friday. At 11:54am  Deputies responded to the accident on the northbound off ramp at I-29 and Highway 2.

After investigation it was discovered that a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Abigail Williams of Grand Lake, CO was northbound on the off ramp and rear-ended a vehicle driven by 59-year-old Susan Breedlove of College Station, TX. Williams was taken to Grape Community Hospital in Hamburg with minor injuries. Breedlove and a passenger refused medical treatment at the scene.

Charges are possible pending further investigation. The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Percival Fire and Rescue and Sidney Fire and Rescue.
