JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Philanthropist and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has announced that wreckage of a sunken military ship on which five brothers died in World War II has been discovered in the South Pacific. A spokeswoman for Allen confirms wreckage from the USS Juneau was found Saturday off the coast of the Solomon Islands. The ship was hit by Japanese torpedoes in 1942, killing hundreds of men, including the five Sullivan brothers from Waterloo, Iowa.

Allen has an expedition team that has reported finding wreckage of other ships, including the aircraft carrier USS Lexington, also sunk during World War II. The expedition team says in a statement it first identified the USS Juneau on Saturday using sonar technology and used a remotely operated underwater vehicle to verify the wreckage on Sunday.

Clarinda Police Chief Keith Brothers reports that eight students who escaped from the Clarinda Academy at around 12:10-a.m. today (Tuesday) by overpowering staff, were apprehended at various locations in the south and southwest part of Clarinda, and returned to the Clarinda Academy. Clarinda Police & the Clarinda Police Department K-9 were assisted by the Page County Sheriff’s Department, Page County Sheriff’s Department K-9-unit, Fremont County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit, Page County 911 Dispatch and Clarinda Academy staff with the apprehension of the students. An investigation into assaults on two members of the Clarinda Academy staff by the students is on-going and charges are pending upon completion of the investigation.

Established in 1992, Clarinda Academy is a residential foster care facility that provides residential treatment to at-risk and delinquent male and female youth from several states.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports 40-year old Dixie Lou Hernandez, of Red Oak, was arrested at around 11:05-p.m. Monday, in Red Oak. Hernandez was taken into custody for driving with a suspended license. She was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a little more than $566 bond. And, Red Oak Police, with assistance from Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies, arrested 40-year old Marjorie Denise Peshlakai, of Henderson, at around 1-a.m. today (Tuesday), for Violation of a No Contact Order. She was brought to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $300 bond.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A popular Democrat seeking to challenge U.S. Rep. David Young for Iowa’s third congressional district has failed to qualify for the primary after a last-minute effort to resubmit paperwork fell short. Businesswoman Theresa Greenfield says she resubmitted petition signatures Friday to be on the June 5 ballot after her now former campaign manager told her he forged some signatures. The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office announced Monday that Greenfield failed to submit enough signatures.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — A 20-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to charges that he drove onto and damaged the Iowa baseball field made famous by the 1989 “Field of Dreams” movie. The Telegraph Herald reports that Austin Pape, of Dyersville, entered a written plea before his arraignment scheduled for Monday in Dubuque. Court records say the owner estimated the damage at more than $5,500. The vehicle left deep gashes in the field and damaged sprinklers.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police say a man found dead outside a Cedar Rapids house is suspected of shooting a man found inside the home. Officers were sent there around 4:40 a.m. Monday. They say the man found dead outside died of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot. The man inside was taken to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. Their names haven’t been released.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — An Iowa woman said her 5-year-old daughter drowned in just seconds after falling into a river during a family visit to a popular park in Sioux Falls. Maggie Jo Zaiger, of Audubon, had reached out to touch the foam near some waterfalls when she slipped into the Big Sioux River in Falls Park near a pedestrian bridge Sunday, police said. The girl’s mother, Courtney Jayne, said she did not know that her daughter would suddenly decide to lean over and touch the pile of foam. “It wasn’t that we weren’t paying attention,” Jayne told the Argus Leader on Monday. “There were seven of us. It literally happened in 30 seconds. …There was nothing we could do, and it was horrible.”

The family had come to South Dakota with a friend and had been in Sioux Falls for a few days. The park was a last-minute stop for the family before the trip home. The drowning happened not far from where two other people drowned in 2013. Sioux Falls parks and recreation director Don Kearney said after the 2013 deaths that the city upgraded its caution signs to warn adults to keep close watch on young children, among other things. Kearney said the foam is a naturally occurring phenomenon created by phosphorus and the agitated water.

The city considered installing barricades near the falls, but felt that would create a false sense of security, Kearny said. “They felt like it would impede public safety’s ability to respond quickly, to have to remove fence,” Kearny told KELO.com . But he said fencing will be part of a safety review following the weekend drowning. Officials with the Mills County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, a traffic stop just before 2-p.m Sunday, resulted in a woman being taken into custody on drug charges. The vehicle was stopped for equipment violations in Glenwood. The Mills County K9 Unit was called-in to assist with the traffic stop.

During the investigation, and upon searching the vehicle, 38 Zoloft pills and a marijuana pipe were located in the vehicle. 21-year old Bailey Taylor was taken into custody for Unlawful Possession of Prescription Pills and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Taylor was brought to the Mills County Jail and held on $1,300 bond.

The driver and soul occupant of a 2017 Jeep Wrangler died Monday afternoon, during a crash in Sac County. The Iowa State Patrol reports the vehicle was traveling southbound on Sac County Road N-28, when it drifted toward the west ditch, hit a field driveway, and rolled. The driver, who was wearing a seat belt, was ejected through the top window and died at the scene. The accident happened at around 2:30-p.m.

The driver’s name was not immediately released.

Officials with the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association report Iowans submitted nearly 9,200 nominations between February 12th and March 12th to kick off the quest to find the best burger in Iowa. Nominations were accepted online by the the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. The number of votes each restaurant received determined the 2018 Top Ten restaurants. The restaurants making the Top Ten list (in alphabetical order) include:

To qualify, the burger must be a 100% beef patty or patties, although other ingredients may be added such as spices, and served on a bun or bread product. Burgers may include any combination of condiments, sauces, cheese or toppings.

Seven restaurants are new to the contest’s Top 10 list and include: BurgerFiend, Cedar Rapids; Cafe Beaudelaire, Ames; Iowa Stater Restaurant, Ames; Moo’s BBQ, Newton; Morgan’s Corner, Ottumwa; The Twisted Tail Steakhouse, Logan; and Wrangling Grace Cafe, Bancroft.

Returning contestants include: Ride’s Bar and Grill, Fort Dodge; Robin’s Nest Cafe, Clarinda (formerly Vaughn’s Cafe and Bakery); and Saucy Focaccia, Cedar Rapids.

The Iowa Secretary of State’s Office has rejected the June 5th primary election nominating petitions submitted by Third Congressional District candidate Theresa Greenfield, saying Greenfield failed to meet the minimum number of signatures required by Iowa Code.

Greenfield’s petitions for the Third District Democratic primary were submitted just before the 5 p.m. deadline on Friday, March 16. They were reviewed by the Secretary of State’s Elections Division on Monday, and included fewer than 1,500 signatures. The minimum number required is 1,790.

The nomination papers from First Congressional District candidate Courtney Rowe, Democrat, and gubernatorial candidate Ron Corbett, Republican, were reviewed and accepted. The full list of candidates whose papers have been received and accepted is available at the Iowa Secretary of State’s website, sos.iowa.gov, or by clicking here.

No candidate has officially qualified for the ballot at this point. The deadline to file an official challenge to any candidate’s nomination papers is this Friday, March 23 at 5 p.m.
