State officials issue warning about Medicare card switch

News

May 25th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

State officials say Iowa seniors need to wait for the card in the mail. New Medicaid cards are being mailed out with new identication numbers that are unique to each person. The old cards have identification numbers that were based on Social Security numbers. That left open the possibility of identity theft if a Medicare card fell into the wrong hands. State officials are warning elderly Iowans that scammers may try to trick people into paying a fee for the card switch. The new Medicare cards are being issued at no expense to Medicare recipients. The state’s insurance division is urging elderly Iowans to say “no thank you” and hang up on anyone who telephones with a pitch about the new Medicare cards.

Heat wave brings warning to take precautions

News, Weather

May 25th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

We are seeing our first major heat wave of the year across the state and the Iowa Department of Public Health says you need to adjust to the conditions. Deputy state epidemiologist, Ann Garvey says a key is to stay hydrated. Garvey says you should drink a lot of fluids and if you are sweating heavily you might need to replace the salt and minerals by eating bananas, something salty or a sports drink to replace them.

She says you can help handle the heat by adjusting your clothing. “We always remind people to wear kind of light-colored kind of loose-fitting clothing. Make sure you are wearing something on your head like a visor or a hat. And it’s really important to wear the sunscreen,” Garvey says.

She says if you have sunscreen that’s been around awhile — you might want to get a new tube. “I tend to like to throw out everything at the end of the season just to be safe,” according to Garvey. Doctor Garvey says be sure you have the right sunscreen for your needs.

“We always just recommend that you read the label carefully. Certain products are marketed more toward different populations and so you’ll often see higher S-P-F for children versus to adults,” Garvey says. “I would just read that label carefully and make the decision based on kind of what your situation is. We know that some people may be more sensitive to certain products over others. Sometimes it’s a little bit of trial and error to see which products might work for you.”

Garvey says be aware of what’s happening to your body if you are out in the heat. She says go inside and drink water a sports drink to get fully hydrated if you feel dizzy or nauseated or weak.

The forecast predicts Iowa could see highs in the 90s through the weekend.

TOLEDO, Iowa (AP) — A former executive director of the Tama County day care has been accused of using thousands of its dollars to buy things for herself. County court records say 46-year-old Kristine Daniel is charged with ongoing criminal conduct and money laundering. The records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for her. The audit covered December 2009 through May 31, 2016, the time period Daniel worked for Kids’ Corner.

A criminal complaint says a search of Daniel’s residence in June 2016 recovered evidence that she’d used county credit cards to buy personal items and sell some online.
