Sheriff’s officials in Pottawattamie County report a man who allegedly ran a stop sign in Oakland at around 2:20 this (Tuesday) morning, was arrested on an OWI charge.  34-year old Emerson Lee Strayhorn, of Des Moines, was driving an SUV at Parker Street and Palmer Avenue when he was pulled over. Authorities say Strayhorn pulled into a residence at the intersection of Parker and Palmer and acted as if he was going to try and run from law enforcement. He was instructed to get back in his vehicle, and complied. Strayhorn reportedly showed signs of being impaired on both alcohol and drugs and was placed under arrest for OWI 3rd offense.

And, a woman being held on a Federal Detainer at the Pott. County Jail, was served with a Class-D felony warrant for Burglary in the 3rd degree/Breaking and Entering. 44-year old Julie Rae DeWaele, of Council Bluffs, (AKA Julie Rae Martinez), was returned to her cell and held on a $5,000 bond on the Burglary charge.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman has been charged with child endangerment over the death of her 2-year-old brother. Polk County Jail records say 18-year-old Denver Emery remained in custody Tuesday. The court records show Emery and her boyfriend, 37-year-old Nicholas Rivera, took the little boy to a hospital in May. Doctors said the boy’s injuries were consistent with “abusive brain trauma” that wasn’t accidental, and they noted bruising on the boy’s back that may have been caused by fingers. Rivera faces the same charge and is due in court next week.

Police say Emery and Rivera were the boy’s sole caregivers in the two weeks leading up to his death May 24.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines police have installed a machine that officials say will help detectives solve gun crimes faster.  Officials said at a news conference Monday that the Des Moines department is the first in Iowa to install an in-house system that analyzes and matches shell casings to firearms. The machine accesses a federally run ballistic imaging network. Department Chief Dana Wingert says it can take months for the state crime lab to return testing results. His detectives now hope to get their own results in 24 to 48 hours — a key time frame when investigating gun crimes.

Des Moines police plan to use the machine for neighboring departments as well. The Des Moines Register reports that a federal grant provided money for the machine.

Red Oak Police Chief Justin Rhamy reports the Southwest Iowa Squadron of Heroes is planning a “Jail N’ Bail” fundraiser. Area participants have been asked to “volunteer” to be a convict for a day, and raise their bail money to avoid being thrown in the mock “slammer.” The event takes place Sept. 26th at the Red Oak Elk’s Lodge. If you’re asked to “bail” one of the volunteers out, please consider their request, as funds raised go toward the purchase of costumes (alterations, updates, support kits, cooling vests and many related items). Children’s handouts will be ordered also, and begin the process of obtaining an official mode of Superhero transportation.

Since the group formed, there are eight volunteer heroes: Batman, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Thor, Optimus Prime, The Flash, Superman, and Super Girl. Rhamy says they have attended several events and have had overwhelming support from the various communities the Super Heroes have appeared in. The group is strictly voluntary, and all funds raised will be used towards the cause and group’s mission statement of positive interaction with young people (ages 1 to 101) in southwest Iowa.

The volunteer “convicts” will be joining Police and others at the Red Oak Elk’s Lodge throughout the afternoon of Sept. 26th (from Noon to 5-p.m.), to get their official “mug shot” taken. The Creston Police Department reports 24-year old James Cox, of Orient, was arrested in Creston, Monday afternoon. Cox was taken into custody on an Adams County warrant for a Controlled Substance Violation. Cox was turned over to the Adams County Sheriff’s Department.

And, a Creston woman reported Saturday afternoon, that sometime between 2-p.m. Sept. 5th and Noon, Saturday, someone took two concrete lion statues, a statue of a boy and a drill, from 205 N. Chestnut Street. The loss was estimated at $620.

(Radio Iowa) — Iowans are remembering the terrorist attacks 17 years ago today (Tuesday) which claimed the lives of nearly three-thousand people in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington D-C. Craig Morris, commander of American Legion Post number-88 in Shenandoah, says their Patriot Day events will start out with what’s called the Four Fives. “Which is a striking of the bells, which happens when a firefighter loses his life in the line of duty,” Morris says. “The mayor will present a wreath. We’ll be playing taps. We’ll say the Pledge of Allegiance. We’re just going to be there to remember and to pay tribute to all of our first responders.”

Morris was working in an auto manufacturing plant in Michigan the day of the Nine Eleven attacks.  “We were told that planes were hitting buildings,” Morris says. “Being prior military, I didn’t know if we were under a military attack. Being in Michigan, everybody was panicking, running to the (gas) pumps. It put everybody in quite a panic.” Today’s ceremony is important, he says, in order to remind everyone of the events on that fateful day.  “Those terrorists, they wanted to inflict as much fear into our country,” Morris says. “I still see a lot of that happening today with the hatred. I hope this country hasn’t fallen asleep, because I really believe it can happen again.”

The events are also a tribute, he says, a thank you to every law officer, firefighter and paramedic who’s on the job. “Our first responders need to know that we’re behind them,” he says. “That’s not an easy job to do. We as a nation, we really do need to stay together, united together, and this is a great way to do that.” Shenandoah’s events will begin at 12:10 p-m at the Bogart Park veterans memorial. One guest speaker is Kim Leininger, whose nephew died in the World Trade Center attacks.

In honor of the Atlantic Sesquicentennial, officials with the First Whitney Bank and Trust in Atlantic, will unveil a monument dedicated to the City’s Founder. A ceremony for the bronze statue of Franklin Whitney will take place at about 6-p.m., across from the bank at 3^rd and Chestnut Streets. The statue was created by Scott Smith and Troy Muller, with the First Century Art Guild in Kimballton.

The unveiling is part of a ceremony take thats place from 5-until 7-p.m. The statue is a gift to the City as part of the City’s 150^th Anniversary celebration.

VINTON, Iowa (AP) — A Vinton man who authorities say fired a gun toward officers has been charged with three crimes. The Iowa Public Safety Department says 43-year-old Lyle Fowler on Friday shot toward officers sent to check his welfare. The two officers fired back, but no one was wounded in the exchange. The department says the officers were Sgt. Benjamin Parmater and Patrol Officer Katlyn Schimerowski of the Vinton Police Department.

Benton County court records say Fowler is charged with two counts of armed assault on a peace officer, two counts of interference with official acts and two counts of going armed with intent. Fowler’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 18.
