The Atlantic Police Department issued a report today (Monday), on two arrests that took place a little over a week ago. Officials say on Jan. 18th, 57-year old Donald Gutschenritter, of Atlantic, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The previous day, 36-year old Samuel Farley, of Anita, was arrested for Possession of a Controlled Substance. Both men were booked into the Cass County Jail.
The Union County Sheriff’s Office reports the female driver of a 2003 Ford Explorer was injured this (Monday) morning, when the SUV went out of control on an icy road and rolled into a ditch. 61-year old Merle Lee Pugh, of Arispe, who was wearing her seat belt, suffered suspected minor/non-incapacitating injuries, and was transported by ambulance to the hospital in Creston following the crash that happened at around 9:30-a.m. on Highway 169. The SUV sustained $5,000 damage during the accident.
A hunting incident late Sunday morning in northwest Iowa’s Clay County has claimed the life of a Granville man. The Iowa DNR reports at around 11:15-a.m., Sunday, Clay County Sheriff’s deputies, Iowa DNR conservation officers and local emergency personnel responded to a report of a hunting incident near County Highway B53 and 160th Ave., in Clay County. 47-year old Kirk Struve, of Granville, was struck by a round believed to be fired from another member of his hunting party. The incident occurred while Struve was coyote hunting with a large group of hunters.
Struve was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. The investigation into the shooting is on-going and further information will be released throughout the investigation as necessary.
In an update to our earlier reports, Police in Council Bluffs today (Monday), said a man found dead inside an apartment at 35 North 1st Street, last Thursday, has been identified as 38-year old Adam Angeroth, of Council Bluffs.
Officers were sent to his home to conduct a welfare check, after he had not been heard from for several days. Detectives are investigating his death as a homicide. An autopsy confirmed evidence of foul play, but for investigative reasons, the manner of Angeroth’s death is being withheld at this time. Anyone with information regarding Angeroth’s death is encouraged to call detectives at 712-328-4728, or CrimeStoppers at 712-328-STOP (7867) to remain anonymous.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports two men held in the Pott. County Jail were presented with warrants out of Nebraska last Friday, for being a Fugitive From Justice. 55-year old Shawn J. Horton, of Omaha, and 31-year old DelShonte Lavaille Barber, of Council Bluffs, were read their warrants and then turned back over to jail staff. A man wanted on a warrant for Violation of Probation, turned himself in to the Pott. County Sheriff’s Office, Friday. Once the Violation of Probation warrant for 19-year old Ethan Edward Becker, of Oakland, was confirmed, he was booked into the Pott. County Jail.
On January 25th also, the Sheriff’s Office participated in the “I Pledge” program, in partnership with the Iowa Alcohol Beverage Division (ABD. The purpose is to enforce Iowa’s tobacco, alternative nicotine, and vapor product laws. Along with a youth participant, a Deputy conducted compliance checks with businesses in Pottawattamie County who sell tobacco products. At around 7:35-p.m., the youth participant entered the Love’s Truck Stop located at 10 E. Street, and attempted to purchase a pack of Swisher Sweet cigars. The clerk identified as 41-year old Roger Zimmerman, of Hancock, sold the youth participant the pack of cigars for $1.59. Zimmerman was cited into court under Iowa Code for being an employee providing tobacco to a minor.
And, a Deputy in patrol vehicle near parked near the Highway 6 and Railroad Highway intersection noticed a vehicle pass him a high rate of speed. The vehicle was clocked on radar as traveling 76 mph in a 55 zone. The driver, 27-year old Daniel Lee Vorthmann, of Council Bluffs, was subsequently arrested for OWI/1st offense.
In an update to our earlier reports, authorities says at least one person died this (Monday) morning, when a semi rear-ended a car Interstate 80, between Avoca and Walnut. The Iowa State Patrol say a woman in the backseat of the car was killed. Troopers did not say whether anyone else was injured. The crash was initially reported around 7:45 a.m. in the eastbound lanes. The Iowa State Patrol confirmed the roads were getting icy in that area at the time. No other information has been released at this time. (10:20-a.m.)
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — California Sen. Kamala Harris is announcing the backing of Iowa Democrat Deidre DeJear as she travels to the early 2020 caucus state Monday. DeJear was Iowa’s first African American to win a primary for statewide office last year, but lost in her attempt to unseat Iowa’s Republican secretary of state. DeJear has since been courted by several Democrats taking steps toward running for president.
Harris campaigned with DeJear in Iowa last fall after the two met in Washington, D.C., and California. Harris is scheduled to travel to Des Moines to participate in a CNN town hall-style event live this ( Monday) evening. Harris announced her candidacy for president Jan. 21. She also announced that Will Dubbs, a former aide to Hillary Clinton in 2016, will direct the California senator’s 2020 Iowa campaign.
(Radio Iowa) — Des Moines police are looking into a crash yesterday (Sunday) afternoon that killed the driver and left his son injured. Police say the car was driving along Grand Avenue near the governor’s mansion when it went out of control, over a concrete retaining wall and crashed onto a parking lot below. The driver, 32-year-old Grant Stokka of Des Moines, was killed, while his eight-year-old son survived with minor injuries. Investigators say it does NOT appear speed, road conditions or impairment were factors, but they believe another vehicle may’ve caused Stokka to quickly veer. Witnesses are asked to come forward.
NEW LONDON, Iowa (AP) — A conference room at a southeast Iowa school has been turned into a food pantry for students and their families. The Hawk Eye reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Food Bank of Iowa and local community groups helped launch the food pantry at New London School District in December. Families in the district with a student in kindergarten through 12th grade can use the food pantry, which is open on Thursdays. About 30 families have used the resource so far.
Students can also access the pantry during the school day if they’re hungry. The elementary school’s principal, Todd Palmatier, says the district hopes to expand the program by hosting cooking nights where families can learn to cook meals with food from the pantry.
