NE woman arrested in Adams County on CBPD Fraud warrant

A woman from Nebraska was arrested at around 4:30-a.m. Saturday, following a traffic stop in Adams County. Deputies stopped a vehicle speeding 81 miles per hour in a 55 mile per hour zone. Upon further investigation, Kaitlyn Richards of Omaha, NE was taken into custody on an Arrest Warrant through the Council Bluffs Police Department for Fraud.

Richards was transported to the Adams County Jail and held on $5,000 bond awaiting transport to the Pottawattamie County Jail. Richards was additionally cited for Speeding and for having No Valid Driver’s License.

2 arrested on drug charges in Taylor County, Saturday

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office reports Deputies conducted a traffic stop Saturday, in the 1700 block of Highway 2 near Bedford, where a vehicle was pulled over for equipment violations. During the course of the traffic stop, the K9 “Ciba” arrived and was deployed, and gave a positive alert to the odor of narcotics.

Two people were subsequently arrested: 36-year old Kenneth Johnson, of Bedford, who was charged with possession of a controlled substance. He is being held at the Taylor County Jail on $1,000 cash bond.

And, 37-year old Shannon Ingraldi, of Foster, Missouri, who was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and taken into custody. She has since been released.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested a man suspected of setting a Cedar Rapids apartment fire that injured him and four others, including a firefighter. Station KCRG reports that 24-year-old Dallas Tullis, of Cedar Rapids was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree arson, assault on a police officer, assault causing injury and interference with official acts.DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a newborn boy has been surrendered to state custody under Iowa’s safe haven law. The Iowa Department of Human Services says it is the 33rd time the safe haven provision has been used since it went into effect in 2001. The department says the baby was born Feb. 2 at an Iowa hospital and released to the custody of DHS officials. Iowa lawmakers changed state law following a 2001 case in which a mother killed her home-delivered newborn in eastern Iowa.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A jury has acquitted an anti-violence activist who had been charged with child endangerment. The Des Moines Register reports that 46-year-old Calvetta Williams was found not guilty Friday by a Polk County District Court jury. Williams was charged with child endangerment causing injury for an incident investigators say happened at Williams’ day care in July 2017 in which a girl received superficial injuries. Williams founded Mothers Against Violence in 2013.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State University is set to receive a $3.5 million gift to transform biomolecular research and make the school into a leader in advanced electron microscopy technology. The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine announced the grant earlier this week. The grant will enable the purchase of a state-of-the-art cryo-transmission electron microscope equipped with a direct electron detector.

Suspect arrested in Iowa apartment blaze that injured 5

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested a man suspected of setting a Cedar Rapids apartment fire that injured him and four others, including a firefighter.
Station KCRG reports that 24-year-old Dallas Tullis, of Cedar Rapids was arrested Friday and charged with first-degree arson, assault on a police officer, assault causing injury and interference with official acts.

Investigators say Tullis set the fire Thursday morning that destroyed the apartment complex. Police say he was found near the scene and taken to a hospital for injuries. Police say he assaulted an officer and a security guard at the hospital.

He has since been release and booked into the Linn County Jail. A 65-year-old male suffered life-threatening injuries and is still hospitalized. Two other adults also suffered injuries and were treated and released.

Axne to be in Anita Sunday morning

Cass County Democratic Part Chair Sherry Toelle reports Iowa 3rd District Democrat Representative Cindy Axne will be at the Anita Community Center tomorrow  (Sunday) at 10-a.m., so that people can “Connect with Your Congresswoman”. Everyone is invited.
Axne, you may recall, defeated long-time 3rd District Representative, Republican David Young, during the Nov. 2018 elections.

Sanders to visit Council Bluffs next Thursday

As the number of Democrats running for president grows, the 2020 hopefuls fanned out across several early-voting states over the weekend and met with voters in some of the states that will have an early say in determining the nominee. Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Sherrod Brown of Ohio were in South Carolina, site of the South’s first primary, drawing diverse audiences in the state where the primary electorate is largely composed of minority voters.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont made Brooklyn the official launch site of his second run for the White House, saying his campaign is tailor-made to defeat President Donald Trump. In Iowa, Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts courted voters. Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota was scheduled to attend the Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, an event where politicians traditionally poke fun at the press and other politicians.

Trump spoke to a gathering of conservatives in suburban Maryland, where he mocked Democrats for their framework to combat climate change and said House lawmakers pushing to expand their investigations of him are “sick.”

Sanders will hold a rally in Council Bluffs 6:30-p.m. Thursday, March 7th, in the Exhibition Hall at the Mid-America Center, 1 Arena Way. The event is free and open to the public. Tickets are not required, but an RSVP is encouraged. Entrance is provided on a first come, first served basis. The Iowa City event will be co-sponsored by University of Iowa Democrats and the local chapter of Young Democratic Socialists of America. Similar rallies are planned for Iowa City and Des Moines later next week.

Calling Trump the most dangerous president in modern U.S. history, the Vermont senator said that his campaign is built to defeat Trump. Sanders pledged to fight for “economic justice, social justice, racial justice and environmental justice.”

Iowa grocery participates in muscular dystrophy fundraiser

BOONE, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa-based grocery store chain is again participating in an annual fundraiser to fight muscular dystrophy, ALS and related muscular degenerative diseases. Fareway Stores throughout Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota are participating in the MDA Shamrocks program running through March 16.

Under the program, customers can buy paper shamrocks along with their grocery purchases for $1, $5 or more. The money collected goes to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. The association says the MDA Shamrocks program the nation’s largest St. Patrick’s Day fundraising program.

The money raised helps fund research and provide individuals with life-enhancing programs and support services. That includes multidisciplinary care at the MDA Care Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Charitable trust commits $3.5M to ISU biomolecular research

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State University is set to receive a $3.5 million gift to transform biomolecular research and make the school into a leader in advanced electron microscopy technology. The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine announced the grant earlier this week.

The grant will enable the purchase of a state-of-the-art cryo-transmission electron microscope equipped with a direct electron detector. Cryo-EM technology generates images of delicate biomolecules by bombarding frozen cellular, viral, nucleic acid or protein samples with electrons. The 2017 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to three scientists for developing the technique.

The Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust is one of the largest private philanthropic foundations in Iowa, with assets of more than $325 million and annual grant distributions of nearly $16 million.

2020 Democratic hopefuls fanning out in early-voting states

Democratic presidential hopefuls are introducing themselves to voters in some of the earliest states that will weigh in on their campaigns to take on President Donald Trump in the 2020 election.

Candidates are fanning out in South Carolina and Iowa today (Saturday), spending time with voters in two of the states that hold the earliest balloting next year. Sens. Cory Booker of New Jersey and Sherrod Brown of Ohio are in South Carolina, site of the South’s first primary. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts plans to court voters in Iowa.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota is scheduled to attend the Gridiron Club dinner in Washington, an event where politicians traditionally poke fun at the press and other politicians. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont is making Brooklyn the official launch site of his second run for the White House.

Trump plans to speak to a gathering of conservatives in suburban Maryland, where he is expected to emphasize the White House’s political message that Democrats are rallying behind what his team is calling the policies of “socialism .”

Guthrie County Sheriff’s report for 2/22 thru 3/1/2019

The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office has released information concerning arrests and incidents from February 22nd – March 1st, 2019.

March 1st – Joshua Tisen, of Panora, turned himself into the Guthrie County Jail to serve the remainder of his jail sentence on an Operating While Intoxicated 1st Offense conviction; James Vaughan, of Yale, was arrested on a Guthrie County warrant for Harassment 3rd Degree.  Vaughan was seen by the Guthrie County Magistrate and held on a $300.00 cash bond.  He later posted the cash bond and was released.

February 28th – Raymond Flora, of Fort Dodge, was arrested at the Poweshiek County Jail on Guthrie County warrants for Theft 2nd Degree and Theft 5th Degree. Flora was transported to the Guthrie County Jail and held on $5,300 cash or surety bond. He appeared before the Guthrie County Magistrate and was then held on $500.00 cash bond.

February 24th – Travis Smith, of Bagley. was arrested on a Guthrie County warrant for Domestic Abuse Assault 2nd Offense following a traffic stop in Bayard. As a result of the traffic stop, Smith was also charged with Driving Under Suspension. Smith was initially held without bond. After an appearance before the Guthrie County Magistrate, Smith had a $100 cash bond. He later posted the bond and was released; Kevin Laughery was arrested for Public Intoxication 1st Offense near the intersection of Highways 44 and 25 in Guthrie Center. Laughery was held on a $300 bond. He later pled guilty to the Guthrie County Magistrate and was released from custody.

February 23rd – A juvenile male from Stuart and a juvenile male from Dexter were referred to juvenile court for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia following a traffic stop in Menlo.; Randy Felder, of Bagley, turned himself into the Guthrie County Jail to serve a thirty-day mittimus for probation violation.; Samantha College, of Guthrie Center, was cited and released on a charge of False Report to a Public Entity following an investigation into an alleged shoplifting violation at the Guthrie Center Dollar General Store.; And, Craig Kintz, of Guthrie Center, was arrested for Operating While Intoxicated 1st offense following a traffic stop in Guthrie Center. Kintz was held on $1,000 bond. He was released on his own recognizance following an appearance before the Guthrie County Magistrate.
