The Mills County Sheriff’s Office, Monday, released details about an accident that took place at around 8:25-a.m. on April 29th. Authorities say a 2018 Toyota driven by 49-year old Jeri Dillion, of Emerson, was traveling west on Highway 34 and had stopped or was stopping for a temporary traffic light near 305th Street. The light was in-place for temporary guard rail repair.

A 2016 International truck driven by 36-year old Devin Bryant, of Dumfries, VA., was also westbound on Highway 34, behind the Toyota. Bryant told authorities he fell asleep at the wheel, causing the truck to rear-end the car. Both vehicles then crossed over the eastbound lanes. The truck came to rest on its passenger side. It’s load was dumped into the ditch.

Dillion was injured and transported to the UNMC by Malvern Rescue.  Bryant was cited for Failure to Reduce Speed to a reasonable and proper rate, and failure to provide proof of insurance.

News

May 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Three people in one vehicle were injured during a chain-reaction collision late Friday evening, in Mills County. Authorities report a juvenile male in a 2009 Dodge suffered a head injury and was transported to the hospital by Malvern Rescue. Two other occupants of the same vehicle, suffered minor injuries, and were also transported to the hospital. Drivers and passengers in the remaining vehicles were assessed at the scene by Malvern and Glenwood Rescue Squads.

Officials say the accident happened while the Dodge, driven by 24-year old Kellin Chambers, of Council Bluffs, was stopped on Highway 34, waiting to turn left into a driveway. 21-year old Quentin Dumler, of Shenandoah, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet and reached to grab his phone charge. He didn’t realize Chambers’ vehicle, and one behind it driven by 33-year old Michelle Holmes, of Council Bluffs, were stopped on the road.

Dumler said he looked up and saw brake lights, but was unable to stop. His vehicle hit Holmes’ 1999 Buick, which then hit the Dodge. The initial collision caused Dumler’s vehicle to veer into the westbound lane of Highway 34, where it was struck by a 2018 Chevy driven by 31-year old Nicholas Edwards, of Kansas City, MO. Following the collision, Edwards’ vehicle went into the north ditch and rolled once before coming to rest on its wheels.

Dumler’s car went off the road and came to rest in the grass north of Highway 34. The other two vehicles came to rest on the south shoulder of the road. The Sheriff’s report did not indicate if charges were filed or any citations were issued.

Governor signs hunting, fishing license organ donor law

Ag/Outdoor, News

May 6th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa outdoor enthusiasts will soon have an option to place an organ donor sticker on their hunting and fishing licenses under a new law signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds. It’s called Logan’s Law after Logan Luft, of Charles City, who died at age 15 in 2017 after an all-terrain vehicle crash. Luft, who enjoyed hunting and fishing, had decided to be an organ donor and his family says that decision saved the lives of five people who received his organs. His father Leonard Luft and other relatives sought the bill in his memory after seeing organ donor stickers on hunting and fishing licenses in Minnesota.

The bill passed unanimously. It requires the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to include organ donor information in hunting safety courses and to provide the designation of organ donor on hunting and fishing license applications. Anyone at least age 14 may check an organ donor box with a parent’s signature. Reynolds signed the bill Monday at Charles City Middle School.
