A man from Pottawattamie County was arrested late Saturday night, in Red Oak. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office says 42-year old Joshua Dale Lamb, of Council Bluffs, was taken into custody at around 11:26-p.m. Saturday, for Driving While Suspended. Lamb was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on bond amounting to $566.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Some Iowa bars and other businesses are voluntarily closing their doors amid an increase in confirmed coronavirus cases. Among them was the Artifacts antiques shop in Iowa City. Owner Todd Thelen told the Gazette that the store has seen three of its mostly older customers die because of the virus. Confirmed cases in the state increased by an additional 380 on Saturday, bringing the total to 27,935. The state also reported three more deaths to bring the total to 704. Businesses that closed or limited operations at the beginning of the pandemic had started expanding operations as Gov. Kim Reynolds began easing restrictions.

WEST UNION, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman has been arrested in a 2-year-old hit-and-run crash that killed a 14-year-old on a moped. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Fayette County Sheriff Marty Fisher said 26-year-old Kelli Jo Michael, of Des Moines, was arrested Friday and charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident in the death of Kaiden Estling. The teen from Maynard was struck in June 2018 while driving a moped along Iowa 150 about 2 1/2 miles south of Fayette. Michael is jailed on $50,000 cash only bond. It wasn’t immediately clear if she had an attorney who could speak on her behalf.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa agency whose power to remove problem officers was recently expanded generally has taken years to ban those who commit serious crimes and rarely punishes officers for improper policing alone. Records show the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy Council has sought to decertify 17 officers in the last 2½ years after determining they had committed crimes or misconduct that warranted their removal from the profession. An Associated Press review found that most of those officers had been found guilty of felonies, domestic violence or other crimes that disqualify them from working in law enforcement. Only one officer since 2018 has been decertified for improper police work.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has signed into law a bill that limits the secretary of state’s ability to send absentee ballot requests to all registered voters. The change signed into law Thursday followed a record turnout in this year’s primary election, largely because of a surge in absentee voting. Senate Republicans pushed the measure through the legislature barely a week after a huge primary turnout, as Secretary of State Paul Pate sent ballot requests to all voters because of concerns in-person voting could be dangerous during the coronavirus pandemic. If the coronavirus persists and Pate wants to mail ballot applications to voters before the November election, the measure that Reynolds signed would require approval of the Republican-run legislature.

Des Moines-based Hy-Vee announced this weekend it is recalling 12 more of its packaged salads. The company said the salads may be contaminated with cyclospora. The latest Hy-Vee brand products to be recalled include:

• Hy-Vee Shredded Iceberg (8 oz.)
• Hy-Vee Veggie Deluxe Salad (12 oz.)

• Hy-Vee Italian Blend Salad (10 oz.)
• Hy-Vee Coleslaw Mix (16 oz.)
• Hy-Vee Romaine Garden Salad (12 oz.)
• Hy-Vee Asian Chopped Salad Kit (13.7 oz.)
• Hy-Vee Sunflower Chopped Salad Kit (13.2 oz.)
• Hy-Vee Chipotle Cheddar Chopped Kit (11.4 oz.)

The FDA says Fresh Express is the maker of the recalled salads. The products were distributed to Hy-Vee stores in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Customers can return any of these products to Hy-Vee for a full refund, or throw them away.

You may recall last week, KJAN told you Hy-Vee had recalled its Garden Salad variety for the same parasite. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention opened up an investigation into an outbreak linked to ALDI Little Salad Bar Brand Garden Salad from ALDI grocery stores, Hy-Vee Brand Garden Salad from Hy-Vee Grocery stores and Signature Farms Brand Garden Salad from Jewel-Osco.

The CDC says those infected will get sick within one week of becoming exposed. The symptoms include diarrhea, loss of appetite, fatigue, vomiting, body aches, headaches, fever, nausea and other flu-like symptoms.

The latest data from the Iowa Department of Public Health shows a slight uptick in the number of positive coronavirus cases, as testing levels continue to rise in the state. One of the new cases reported was in Cass County, while 5 new cases were reported in Shelby County (see area county stats below). As of 10-a.m. today (Saturday), the IDPH said there were 380 new positive cases and three more deaths. That brings the statewide total to 27,935 positive cases and 704 deaths.

Officials said 288,213 Iowans have been tested for the virus, and 17,413 have recovered. The data shows an increase in positive cases in the last seven days over the previous seven days. New positive cases have remained relatively flat or downward trending since an apparent peak in early May. Testing levels have also continued to increase to all-time levels in the last seven days.

IDPH hospitalization data continues to show a steady decline since a peak in late May. IDPH reported 131 Iowans hospitalized with the virus, while 40 patients are listed in intensive care and 22 are on ventilators. There were 18 patients hospitalized in the last 24 hours. IDPH reported approximately 3,335 inpatient beds available in the state, with 495 ICU beds available and 806 ventilators available.

In southwest/western Iowa, there were seven patients hospitalized with COVID-19 (1 more than on Friday), and no change in the number of ICU patients (2), hospital admissions (1) or those on a ventilator (1). There are currently 26 outbreaks reported in Iowa’s long-term care facilities. There are currently 783 positive cases, with 488 recoveries and 362 deaths.

Earlier this month, it was announced that the Cass County Fair Board had decided to cancel all non- 4H and FFA activities for the 2020 Cass County Fair. At that time, officials said all youth activities would be held in a “Show and Go,” or other, modified format. Now, officials have indicated livestock shows will be live streamed whenever possible, and will also be archived online for later viewing. All judging results will be shared as soon as available via website, social media and with local print and radio media.

To maintain the health and safety of our exhibitors, staff and volunteers, the Cass County Fairboard respectfully asks that only members of the exhibitors’ immediate family (those living in the same household) be present in person for any live shows. Only shows/judging held outdoors will allow any spectators. All spectators are asked to maintain at least 6 foot distance from other households, follow hand-washing and sanitizing procedures in common areas, and bring their own seating, as bleacher space will be extremely limited or unavailable. All exhibitors and spectators must be off the grounds by one hour after the last show of the night to allow for cleaning of show areas.

The FFA Food stand will be open limited hours, with a limited menu, during livestock show days. Additional details coming soon. As no other food will be available on grounds, exhibitors may bring their own food, but large coolers and multi-family picnics and potlucks are strongly discouraged. The Cass County Fair continues to be an alcohol-free fair.

Two people were injured and transported to a hospital following a pursuit in northwest Iowa that ended in a crash. The accident happened at around 7:30-p.m., Friday, in Woodbury County. The Iowa State Patrol reports a 2006 Dodge Charger driven by 18-year old Elijah R. Dean, of Sioux City, was traveling north on S. Paxton in Sioux City, attempting to elude Police after a shooting incident that took place at another location.

The car ran a stop sign at the intersection with Transit Avenue, and struck a 2008 Chevy Impala driven by 36-year old Kevin D. Lawrence, of Sioux City. Following the crash, Dean, who suffered minor injuries, tried to flee on foot before being taken into custody. Kevin Lawrence suffered serious injuries in the crash.

Both were transported to Mercy One Hospital in Sioux City. Authorities say both drivers were wearing a seat belt.
