Two-vehicle accident in Creston Monday

A two-vehicle accident in Creston on Monday resulted in possible injuries for one driver. The Creston Police Department reports the accident took place at 3:23 p.m. on Sumner Street near West Howard Street in Creston.

A 2007 Ford Fusion driven by 19-year-old Breanna Renee Long of Fontanelle was traveling south on Sumner Street following a 2005 Ford Focus driven by 18-year-old Jalyn Rae Klejch of Creston. Long claimed that Klejch came to a sudden stop to turn east on Howard Street and Long’s vehicle ran into the back of the Klejch vehicle. Long stated she didn’t believe the other vehicle had any working lights on the back. Klejch stated she slowed down for the turn and had her turn signal on prior to the collision. Long was treated for minor injuries from the airbag deployment at the scene by medics. Klejch was uninjured.

No citations were issued for the accident.

Red Oak man arrested on Assault charge

The Red Oak Police Department reports the arrest on Monday of 20-year-old Tyler Blaine Baucom of Red Oak for Simple Assault and Child Endangerment- No Injury. Baucom was arrested at 6:24 p.m. at 105 E Nuckols Street in Red Oak. He was booked in to the Montgomery County Jail and held on $2,000 bond. Red Oak Police was assisted by Deputies from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office during the arrest.

Two suffer minor injuries in rollover accident in Adair County

Adair Fire and Rescue officials report that at approximately 5:43 p.m. Monday they were dispatched to a rollover accident off of the eastbound 75 exit on I-80. Two occupants of the vehicle suffered minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

No further details are known at this time.

Patrol: 3 killed, 2 injured in central Iowa wrong-way crash

ALDEN, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State Patrol investigators say three people — including a child — have died in a crash in central Iowa’s Hardin County. The Des Moines Register reports that the crash happened Sunday evening on U.S. Highway 20 near Alden, when a pickup truck traveling the wrong way crashed into the sport utility vehicle carrying two adults and a child.

Officials say 44-year-old Cristy Gutierres, who was driving, and 38-year-old Mario Zubia and 11-year-old Jessie Gutierres died in the crash. All were from Story City. Officials say a 6-year-old child in the SUV was flown to a Des Moines hospital with serious injuries. The patrol says the pickup driver, 25-year-old Spencer Bultman, of Hampton, was also injured.

4 people arrested following a fight, Saturday in Cass County

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports three men and one woman were arrested Saturday following a report of a fight. 21-year old Jaden Allen Green, 20-year old Parrish Wright, and 21-year old Logan Allen Russell, all of Atlantic, along with 22-year old Kolby Austin Fulk, of Walnut, were arrested on one count each of Disorderly Conduct. They were transported to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on their own recognizances.  Also arrested Saturday, was 53-year old Rex Dean McDermott, of Atlantic, for Felony OWI/ 3rd or Subsequent offense. McDermott was taken to the Cass County Jail and later released on $5,000 bond.

Last Friday, Cass County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 36-year old Brenda Nichole Leah Kinzie, of Council Bluffs, on two District Court warrants for Probation Violation. Kinzie was taken to the Cass County Jail where she remains held on $10,000 bond.

On August 20th, 32-year old James Arthur Erickson, of Atlantic, was arrested on one Atlantic Police Department warrant for Domestic Assault, and four District Court warrants for Failure to Appear. Erickson was taken to the Cass County Jail and later released on his own recognizance.

On August 17th, 27-year old Austin Allen Schmitt, was arrested in Cass County on a District Court warrant for Violation of Probation. Schmitt was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $2,000 bond. And, on August 14th, 53-year old Terry Dean Calhoun, of Anita, was arrested on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Calhoun was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $10,000 bond.

Atlantic Public Library receives accreditation from the State Library of Iowa

The Atlantic Public Library has met the conditions for state accreditation from The State Library of Iowa. The Organization says achieving accreditation requires a significant, ongoing local, commitment to all areas of library operations including governance and funding, staffing, library collection, services, public relations, access and facilities. The accreditation is valid through  June 30th of 2023.

State Librarian Michael Scott said, “The director and board of trustees of the Atlantic Public Library and the city of Atlantic are to be commended for this achievement and their commitment to excellence in public library services for their community.”

Of Iowa’s 542 public libraries, 377 are now accredited. Accredited libraries receive a higher rate of compensation through the State Library’s Enrich Iowa program. They also receive a Certificate of Accreditation signed by Governor Kim Reynolds, Lieutenant Governor Adam Gregg, State Librarian Michael Scott, and Iowa Commission of Libraries Chairperson Joe Lock.

Mills County Sheriff reports numerous arrests

Mills County Sheriff Gene Goos reports a number of recent arrests.

On August 20th Deputies arrested 26-year-old Marcus Jonathan Morgan of Hastings for Interference with Official Acts, Warrant for Harassment 1st, and Contempt and Warrant for Violation of No Contact Order. Morgan was arrested on Paddock Avenue at 6:19 p.m. He was taken to the Mills County Jail and held on $2,600 bond.

Also on August 20th at 3:18 a.m. deputies arrested 32-year-old Kyleigh Jo Crom of Malvern for Possession of Controlled Substance and a Council Bluffs Warrant for Failure to appear. She was held on $1,000 bond.

On August 21st Deputies arrested 23-year-old Jennifer Elizabeth Falcon of Omaha for OWI 1st Offense. The arrest occurred on Highway 34 at 11:13 p.m. Falcon was held on $1,000 bond.

Also on August 21st at 7:57 p.m. at 221st Street and Highway 34 Deputies arrested 31-year-old James Isaiah Donevley McFarland of Council Bluffs for Eluding, OWI 3rd Offense, Driving While Revoked, Speeding, Reckless Driving, Passing of Grade or Hill, Open Container, Failure to Maintain Control, and Failure to Provide Proof of Financial Liability. McFarland was held on $11,000 bond.

On August 22nd Deputies report the arrest of 39-year-old Kale Garrett Hardman of Red Oak for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was arrested on Highway 34 at 3:01 a.m. and taken to the Mill County Jail and held on $1,000 bond.

Also on August 22nd Mills County Deputies arrested 29-year-old Travis James McAlexander of Papillion, NE on a charge of being Fugitive from Justice. McAlexander was arrested at 10:44 a.m. at the intersetion of Levi Road and Highway 34. He was booked in and held on no bond.

On August 23rd Deputies arrested 47-year-old Michael Beveridge of Omaha, NE on a warrant for Failure to Appear on multiple charges. He was arrested at 4:45 a.m. on Glover Road, booked in and held on $2,000 bond.

Also on August 23rd 52-year-old Gregory Allen Riley of Red Oak was arrested for Driving while barred at 7:45 p.m on Highway 34. Bond was set at $2,000.

Grant announced to support construction of new campground at Lake Manawa State Park

COUNCIL BLUFFS, IA — Today, Rep. Cindy Axne (IA-03) welcomed a new $1,279,000 grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) to support the construction of a new campground at Lake Manawa State Park in Council Bluffs.

The new grant comes less than one month after legislation cosponsored by Rep. Axne to permanently fund the LWCF was signed into law.

The LWCF matching grant covers half the cost for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to complete the project, which will include full power and sewage hookups for 40 sites and a new shower and restroom facility.

Lake Manawa State Park covers 1,529 acres surrounding the 772 acre lake – and is one of the most popular outdoor recreation facilities in the Council Bluffs area. The Park offers hiking and bike trails, boating ramps, swimming areas, and ample opportunities for fishing.

Omaha woman died in head-on crash near Crescent

An Omaha woman died from injuries sustained in a head-on collision in Pottawattamie County on Friday evening. Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputies report the two-vehicle collision happened at about 6:08 p.m. north of Crescent on Old Lincoln Highway near Missouri Avenue.

The investigation indicated that 21-year-old Carter Calvert of Omaha was southbound on Old Lincoln Highway in a 2012 Toyota Camry as a vehicle driven by 56-year-old Catherine Vasquez was northbound on Old Lincoln Highway. For unknown reasons the vehicles collided head-on.

Mrs. Vasquez was taken to UNMC in Omaha where she was pronounced dead. Vazquez was a special education paraprofessional at Saddlebrook Elementary School in Omaha.  Mr. Calvert was transported to UNMC with serious injuries.

Preliminary investigation indicates that speed and alcohol may have been a factor. The accident remains under investigation.
