Authorities warn State Fair visitors to lock their vehicle

News

August 8th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa — With the Des Moines metro area has averaged more than 100 stolen vehicles per month this year, authorities are warning too many drivers make it easy for thieves to steal even more vehicles. Law enforcement departments, including the Iowa State Patrol, Des Moines Police, West Des Moines Police, Ankeny Police and the Polk County Sheriff, report 765 stolen vehicles from the beginning of the year. Another 796 vehicles were burglarized. An officials with the Iowa State Patrol, Lt. Nathan Ludwig, tells KCCI, that with the State Fair beginning on Thursday, drivers should remember to lock their car, and not to leave valuables in plain sight. Police say drivers have given thieves a happy hunting ground by leaving unattended vehicles running in parking lots with air conditioners on when it’s extremely hot and while they run into a convenience store, or simply leaving the keys in an unlocked vehicle while it’s unattended. Ludwig told KCCI, people are “Just getting lazy.”

Another common misconception, according to investigators, is that push-to-start vehicles left running cannot be stolen if a key fob is away. That is not the case. The most common targets in Central Iowa include Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks.

August 7th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

A “No Swim” Advisory remains in effect for Lake Manawa, in Council Bluffs. In July, the Iowa DNR had said the E. Coli bacteria levels in Lake Manawa were five times higher than the level considered safe. The lake is one of 11 across the State will an E.Coli-related advisory. The Iowa DNR says it will keep the beach under a “no swim advisory” – or, swim at your own risk – for the time being.
Other area lakes or recreation areas with advisories still in effect, include: Prairie Rose State Park Beach, in Shelby County,  the Lake of Three Fires Beach, in Bedford, and Nine Eagles Beach in Davis County, in southern Iowa.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources say it’s nearly impossible to trace the source of the bacteria, that’s because the sources can include animals such as wildlife, dogs, and humans. Determining the exact source is expensive and time consuming.

Drinking Water Advisory in effect for customers of SIRWA

News

August 6th, 2021 by Ric Hanson

(Creston, Iowa) – Customers of SIRWA (Southwest Iowa Rural Water Association) were placed under a drinking water advisory, Friday. SIRWA recommended their customers boil the water before using for drinking, or to use an alternative source, following a problem in the distribution system, which lost pressure, Friday. The system has been repaired, repressurized, and bacteria samples will be collected. The advisory is a precaution until bacterial sample results are available. You will be notified when  the results are available and the advisory is lifted. The system is working with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to resolve the situation.

Until the test results come back clear, IT IS RECOMMENDED NOT TO DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water. The water may be used for bathing and other similar purposes. If the water is colored, use an alternative source such as bottled water.
For more information, please contact Matt Schultz with SIRWA at 6417825744. General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1(800) 4264791.

When water service is restored, there may be air in your water piping and the water may be discolored. It is recommended to run the first water from a faucet that does not have an aerator screen, such as a bathtub or hose bib. Open the faucet slowly to allow the air to escape. Once the water is flowing, allow the faucet to run until it is clear. The water may be cloudy at first due to air in the water or particles that dislodged as the pipes filled with water. This should clear fairly quickly. If water is cloudy or colored throughout the house and it does not clear after allowing the water to run for several minutes, use an alternative source such as bottled water and contact the person listed above.
