Energy Saving Tips

News

July 19th, 2011 by admin

With dangerously hot temperatures and dew points forecast this week, MidAmerican Energy is offering several energy saving tips for local customers:

Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees or higher in the summer to save money. You can also save money with a programmable thermostat that adjusts temperatures when you are asleep or out of the home.

Use weather stripping caulk to seal air leaks and block drafts in the basement and attic, around doors, windows, chimneys and other potential areas for air leakage.

On hot, sunny days, close drapes, blinds, and shades, and particularly those in south and west windows.

Make sure your air registers and radiators aren’t blocked by any type of furniture. Also be sure to dust or vacuum registers on a regular basis.

Schedule any heat-generating activities like oven cleaning, baking, dishwashing, and clothes drying until the late evening or early morning hours.

Clean your air conditioner by checking air filters monthly and clean and replace them as needed. Wash outside air conditioning coils with mild soap and water to remove dust and dirt.
