The Atlantic Public Library hosted a Grand Opening open house on Saturday for the newly completed reading garden project. Members of the public, library board, staff, and other contributors gathered to dedicate the new space. Atlantic Library Board Member Dee Beebensee said the project took about six months to come together once the planning details were complete. She thinks it’s a nice outdoor space to enjoy while visiting.

Former Director Natalie Struecker, who was here during the planning process of the project, talked about how everything got started.

Struecker thinks the space will add valuable usable space to the Library property.

Gary Oedewaldt and his wife Margaret Oedewaldt from Missouri were on hand for the grand opening. Margaret’s Great Uncle Carlos Cole was one of the first board members for the library in 1903 and a number of other family members have served in that same role. Margaret worked at the library in high school and when they found out about the project they wanted to contribute so they helped sponsor a bench. Gary Oedewaldt said he liked the fact that the project will help highlight the front entrance.

The Atlantic Trojans football team rolled to a season opening win at Clarinda on Friday night 40-0. The Trojans jumped on top early scoring on their first two possessions and didn’t look back.

Chase Mullenix opened up the scoring capping off the opening drive with a 25-yard touchdown run. After the Trojans forced a three and out for Clarinda on their first possession, Atlantic added another score in four plays with a Dillon Sonntag 48-yard touchdown run to make it 14-0.

Clarinda’s longest drive of the night on the next possession would be cut off by a Logan Reilly interception that he returned 51 yards for a touchdown.  Atlantic seized full control of the game on that play and lead 33-0 at halftime.  One more score would be added on the Trojans’ first possession of the second half to bring the final 40-0 score.

Chase Mullenix finished with one touchdown receiving and one rushing. Jaxson Eden threw two touchdown passes and 5 different Trojans would enter the end zone on the night.  The Trojan defense was stellar as well, holding Clarinda under 100 yards of total offense.

Atlantic will now return home for a game against the Shenandoah Mustangs next Friday at the Trojan Bowl.

LaVon Eblen visits with Nick Nicotero of the Salem Lutheran Home in Elk Horn about a resident, Elleen Wheatley, who will be celebrating her 100th birthday with an open house on Sunday, August 27 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the American Legion Memorial Building in Atlantic.  Elleen is the oldest living female marine veteran in the U.S.
