Arnold Motor Supply to celebrate Grand Opening June 23rd

Officials with the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce say a Grand Opening Ceremony for the new Arnold Motor Supply store will be held 9:30-a.m. Tuesday, June 23rd.Arnold Motor Supply The store is located at 1206 SW 7th Street, in Atlantic. Normal business hours are 7:30 a.m. to- 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 7:30-a.m. to 1-p.m. on Saturday. The store offers retail as well as paint and body services. Adam Kohrs serves as the store manager.

The Arnold Group of Companies was started in Spencer, in 1927 by E.P. Arnold and is one of the largest partnerships in the United States with stores in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Illinois, and Missouri. The company includes 52 auto parts stores as well as three warehouses, three light industrial coating distributors, one paint and body shop supply store, and a cylinder head re-manufacturing division.

Nineteen locations have complete machine shops located within the stores. The Arnold Motor Supply stores are affiliated with Auto Value Parts Stores one of the largest chain of auto parts stores in the United States.

Cass County Relay for Life a big success Friday

The 2015 Cass County Relay for Life was held on Friday night at the Atlantic High School Track with hundreds of supporters participating  and large donation money raised.  Sunny weather welcomed a day full of events that began in the morning with a tractor ride that left from the Cass County Fairgrounds hosted by the Mahle relay team.

A motorcycle ride also was held starting at 1:00pm at the Atlantic City Park and ending at Relay for a donation presentation by the Windbags and UCC Riders team.

The survivor dinner took place at the Atlantic High School commons from 4:30pm-6:00pm with a big turnout of survivors enjoying a meal graciously donated by the Atlantic HyVee.

At 6:00pm survivors took to the track to open up the Relay event and celebrate another year of birthdays with all others present cheering them on.  The beautiful night included a variety of entertainment, education, kids activities, food and other fun.

The Luminary ceremony wrapped up the night honoring loved ones lost and supporting those still fighting Cancer.  The committee announced at the end of the night that the running total of donations was at $60,678 to support the American Cancer Society and the fight against Cancer.

The committee would like to send a huge thank you to all participants, teams, sponsors and all others that help make Relay for Life in Cass County a huge success.

Lavon and Miss NiNi talk about making popsicles, cool treats for summertime.

CHOCO-STRAWB MINI POPSICLES

Ingredients:

  • 1 -1/4 t. cocoa powder
  • 2 T. chocolate spread (Nutella, Hershey’s chocolate spread, Biscoff Cookie Spread)
  • 1 c. milk (any type of milk you PREFER—I used whole dairy milk because I wanted a creamier
  • texture.)
  • 4 medium size fresh strawberries, thinly sliced (may substitute whole frozen strawberries)

Method:

In a blender, blend cocoa powder, chocolate spread and milk. Line sides of popsicle molds or 5-oz. paper cups with thinly sliced strawberries. Slowly pour chocolate mixture into molds, tryingto avoid strawberry slices from moving. Place in freezer until slushy. Insert popsicle stick orsturdy plastic straw that has been cut to desired handle length into slushy mixture. If stick/straw tends to lean in the mixture, straighten it and recheck in about 15 minutes. May need to keep rechecking until mixture is solid enough to hold stick/straw vertically. Freeze until solid, at least 4 hours before releasing from molds and serving. To unmold, I removed popsicles in cups from freezer about 10 minutes before unmolding, allowing the popsicles to still be firm but easy to withdraw from the paper cup. Makes 4 small popsicles.

NOTE from Miss NiNi: These popsicles are so refreshing! Fresh strawberries are abundant right now and were my fruit of choice. However, other fresh or whole frozen fruits can be added for a different taste. Word of caution: Might want to keep the paper cup close by once the popsicle has been removed as it’s great for catching drips—especially if little ones are enjoying these treats!

Other fruit flavor combinations:

CANTALOUPE POPSicles

  • ½ heaping c. ripe cantaloupe, chopped into small chunks
  • ½ c. milk

Blend ingredients together; pour into molds or small paper cups; freeze at least 4 hours, inserting stick into mixture when slushy in order to hold stick vertically.

BLUEBERRY CHIA POPSicles

  • 1 c. fresh blueberries
  • ½ banana
  • 1 T. Chia seeds
  • ¾ c. milk

Blend ingredients together; pour into popsicle molds or small paper cups; freeze for at least 4 hours, inserting stick into mixture when slushy in order to hold stick vertically.

MARK EDWARD McDANIEL, 41, of Oakland [& formerly of Harlan] died Friday, June 19, 2015 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. A visitation with the family of MARK McDANIEL will take place Tue., June 23rd, from 5-until 7:30-p.m., at the  Rieken Vieth Funeral Home in Oakland.

Interment will be held at a later date.

MARK McDANIEL is survived by:

His wife – Jennifer, of Oakland;

His daughters – Emily and Megan;

His brother – William (Catrina) McDaniel, of Harlan;

His sister – Tammie McDaniel, of Hancock.

and his in-laws.

Cardinals hit 3 homers in 12-4 rout of Phillies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Randal Grichuk homered and had three hits, and Kolten Wong and Yadier Molina also went deep as the St. Louis Cardinals set season highs for runs and hits in a 12-4 rout of the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

The Cardinals avoided their second three-game losing streak of the season while breaking out of the offensive funk that followed Tuesday’s news of a federal investigation into whether club officials illegally hacked into the Houston Astros’ player database.

The Cardinals batted .211 with five runs in the first three games after the story broke. If the investigation had any bearing on the lackluster offense, they certainly put it out of their minds against the Phillies.

St. Louis pounded out 16 hits, including six for extra bases. Jhonny Peralta doubled and had three RBIs, Mark Reynolds had a two-run double and 10 Cardinals got hits.

Young fan in Philly hit by foul ball, taken to hospital

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – A boy sitting in the front row was hit by a line drive late in the game between the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies.

A spokesman for the Phillies says the boy was taken to a hospital for further evaluation Friday night.

The young fan was seated along the first-base line when he was struck by a sharp foul ball off the bat of Philadelphia’s Domonic Brown with two outs in the ninth inning.

Fans around the boy immediately motioned for medical help. After being helped out of the stands, the boy was transported in the arms of a man on a cart to the first-aid center on the concourse. The boy appeared to be conscious while holding an ice pack on his upper chest close to his left shoulder.

Stanton man arrested for violation of probation

The Red Oak Police Department reports an arrest Friday evening at 5:36pm.  37-year-old Roger Lynn Gibson II of Stanton was arrested at 106 West Coolbaugh Street in Red Oak on a charge of Violation of Probation.  Gibson II was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and booked in on $5,000 bond.
