(Update) Harlan man dies from gunshot wound

In an update to our report at 7-a.m., police in Harlan say one person is dead following a shooting incident that happened Sunday evening. Officers were called to 801 Industrial Avenue at around 7:40-p.m., Sunday, for a report of a gunshot injury.

When they arrived, authorities found 39-year old Harvey L. Moody, in the yard, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head.Moody was transported by Medivac Ambulance to Myrtue Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Authorities initially said the wound appeared to have been self-inflicted, but the final determination will be made by an autopsy. The case remains under investigation.

DEAN OLDENBURG, 84, of Harlan, died Sun., June 21st, at the Salem Lutheran Nursing Home, in Elk Horn. Funeral services for DEAN OLDENBURG will be held 11-a.m. Sat., June 27th, at Trinity Lutheran Church, in Avoca. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.

Friends may call at Trinity Lutheran Church on Saturday, from 10-until 11-a.m. (prior to the service).

Burial will be in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery near Van Meter, on Mon., June 29th.

DEAN OLDENBURG is survived by:

His wife – Carolyn, of Harlan.

His sister – Donna (Russ) Knuth, of DeSoto.

His “Harlan grandchildren” – Travis & Tyler Anderson, and Austin & Megan Euchner.

Other relatives and his in-laws.

Madison County Republicans have announced a “Roundup Dinner with Donald Trump” will be held this Saturday evening (June 27th), in Winterset. The event featuring the Republican presidential candidate and Iowa U-S Republican Congressman David Young, will be held from 5-until 8:30-p.m. with a social reception at the John Wayne Birthplace Museum, and ends with a Smoked barbeque dinner at the Winterset High School, where Trump will address the crowd.

Creston man arrested on drug charges, Sunday

A man from Creston was arrested Sunday morning on drug charges. The Creston P-D says 26-year old Kyle Duane Hoadley was taken into custody in the 100 block of N. Spruce Street. Hoadley faces charges that include Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Possession of a Controlled Substance. He was later released on $1,000 bond.

And, a Creston woman reported to police Sunday, that sometime between June 14th and 21st, someone took a spare key and wallet from her apartment located in the 600 block of Grand Avenue, in Creston.

Healthy U series of lunches continues Thursday, in Atlantic

The next in a series of “Heathy U” programs sponsored by Cass County Health Systems will take place Thursday, June 25th, beginning at noon, in Conference Room 2 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital, in Atlantic.

Guest speaker is Dr. Elaine Berry, who will address the topic of “End of Life Care.”

End of life care is a difficult topic, but knowing your loved one’s wishes, or having your own wishes known, can make this time easier to navigate for all. Dr. Berry will discuss the issues involved and answer questions. Dr. Berry joined Atlantic Medical Center in 1988, where she provides the full spectrum of family medical care. She has served as medical director of Cass County Hospice since 1990, and in 2008 became the only certified Hospice and Palliative Care Physician in southwest Iowa. Dr. Berry also serves as the medical director of Cass County Emergency Services and is the Cass County Medical Examiner.

Healthy U is a free educational series that focuses on a different health topic each month. Medical professionals present an educational program and attendees receive a healthy sack lunch to enjoy during the program. Future topics will include dementia, joint health, and diabetes.
