Eighteen-year-old Kevin Norton, of Ames, and 27-year-old James Stumbo, of Boone, are scheduled to appear in Boston Municipal Court.

The men were arrested Aug. 22 after they allegedly made threatening statements in an online Pokemon forum and on other social media before driving to Boston for the World Pokemon Championships. Police said they found a 12-gauge shotgun, an AR-15 rifle and hundreds of rounds of ammunition in their car. They were stopped as they tried to register for the championships at the Hynes Convention Center.

Players from more than 30 countries competed at the three-day, invitation-only event for a share of more than $500,000 in scholarship awards.

Farley has not settled on a QB at UNI

Sports

August 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

UNI coach Mark Farley may wait until right before Saturday’s kickoff at Iowa State to name a starting quarterback. Sawyer Kollmorgan, Aaron Bailey, Dalton Demos and Eli Dunne are all vying for the job. Dunne is a redshirt freshman from Grinnell who Farley says has stepped up his game.

Kollmorgan has started 27 games over the past three seasons. Farley had said he wanted to trim the competition down to two quarterbacks by game week. If he has done that he’s not letting on.

Email shows U. Iowa ‘mandate’ for female coach

Sports

August 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An internal email says University of Iowa athletics department administrators ordered a female be hired for an assistant track coaching job in 2013. Attorneys for Mike Scott, a male coach who says he was illegally passed over for the job, received the email last week and provided it to The Associated Press. They’re portraying it as a strong piece of evidence that will help prove his gender discrimination allegations.

In the email, Head Coach Layne Anderson tells assistants that he had rewritten the position’s job description in a way to attract more female candidates. He writes that the change “is once again largely driven by the mandate from the administration to hire a female (qualified to them being optional).” A female was eventually hired.

The university has denied illegal discrimination.

Iowa State seeks fast start after opening day stumbles

Sports

August 31st, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Opening day losses have all but doomed Iowa State in each of the last two seasons. The Cyclones know that the path to a turnaround could begin with a strong start. Iowa State enters its seventh season under coach Paul Rhoads with an immediate must-win game on Saturday against Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones have dropped back-to-back home openers against FCS schools, starting with a defeat to Northern Iowa in 2013. A third such loss might again derail their season before it starts.
