Applications for deer hunting permits in Atlantic available now

September 12th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Atlantic Police Lt. Dave Erickson says anyone interested in bow hunting within the City Limits of Atlantic, for the hunting year 2015-16, can apply now for permit applications through the Atlantic Police Department. The hunt is allowed under the city’s Urban Deer Control Ordinance. Hunters wanting to receive an application should stop by the Atlantic Police Department during their normal business hours of 8-a.m. to 4-p.m., Monday through Friday.

The permit will allow you to harvest anterless deer. Once you have reported the harvest to the A-PD, you will be allowed to harvest a buck. Bow hunters that qualified last year with the Atlantic Police Dept. will not need to do so this year, but Erickson says you still have to pick up the permit application and have it filled-out.

New hunters will have to contact the A-PD and set up a time with Lt. Erickson, in order to qualify. Land owners who would like to allow a bow hunter to hunt on their land, should call the Police Dept. at 712-243-3512 during normal business hours, and sign-up.

Iowa State hosts Iowa this afternoon, in the 63rd meeting in the series. The Cyclones have won three of the last four and coach Paul Rhoads says of all the key matchups it starts up front. In terms of individual matchups one of the most interesting will be Cyclone sophomore tackle Jake Campos against Iowa senior defensive end Drew Ott.

ISU has the home field advantage but the road team has won the last three games.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Cyclones have an experienced offense and an improved defense that has several new faces. Ferentz says the Hawkeyes must find a way to defend the Iowa State receivers.

It is also the first road test of the season for the Hawkeyes which Ferentz says is always a challenge. Iowa leads the all time series 40-22. Pre-game coverage on KJAN begins at 1:30-p.m., with the kickoff slated for 3:30-p.m.

MISSOURI VALLEY, Iowa (AP) — The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge in Iowa will offer a chance to learn more about the Civil War-era steamboat that sank nearby in the Missouri River. On Sunday morning at 11, artifacts recovered from the Bertrand will be on display, and an expert will discuss them. The ship’s cargo included an assortment of items that settlers would have needed to survive on the frontier. The Bertrand sank on April 1, 1865.

A park ranger will lead a visit to the Bertrand discovery site to discuss how the westward expansion brought big changes to wildlife in the Missouri River valley. The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is situated north of Omaha, between Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Blair, Nebraska. Anyone visiting the refuge must have a $3 entrance permit.

Chiefs’ Dontari Poe probable for season opener at Houston

September 12th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dontari Poe was listed as probable for the Chiefs’ opener Sunday in Houston, less than two months after undergoing surgery on a disc in his back. Poe hurt his back in June and received two rounds of epidurals that did little to alleviate the pain. He had surgery on July 15 and missed all of training camp and the preseason.

He returned to a light workout on Sunday, and had his first full-pad practice Wednesday. There were no major surprises on the final injury report Friday. The only players listed as questionable were right tackle Eric Fisher, who’s expected to play after practicing all week, and right guard Jeff Allen, who has been dealing with a knee injury.

Cardinals at Reds game suspended in top of 8th tied 2-2

CINCINNATI (AP) — Heavy rain forced the St. Louis Cardinals at Cincinnati Reds game to be suspended in the top of the eighth inning tied 2-2 on Friday night. It’ll be resumed at 12:30 p.m. today (Saturday), with the regularly scheduled game to follow.

The teams waited out the 17th rain delay at Great American Ball Park for an hour and seven minutes before it was suspended. It was Cincinnati’s first suspended game this season — three have been rained out.

Reds first baseman Joey Votto struck out and walked three times. He received a two-game suspension on Friday for an altercation with umpire Bill Welke on Wednesday, but will keep playing while his appeal is heard. Rain fell intermittently during the game, then intensified in the eighth inning with the Cardinals batting, prompting the umpires to call for the tarp.
