KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. The star running back hurt his knee in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Chicago. An MRI on Monday confirmed the tear. Earlier Monday, coach Andy Reid said “the worst case is the ACL is torn. That’s probably the direction it’s heading.”
Charles was making a cut deep in Bears territory on Sunday when his right knee buckled at a gruesome angle. The four-time Pro Bowl selection needed help from a trainer and linebacker Justin Houston to get off the field, never once putting any weight on the leg. Charles tore the ACL in his other knee four years ago, missing most of the season.
CHICAGO (AP) — Kris Bryant and Jorge Soler each hit two-run drives and the Chicago Cubs connected for a postseason franchise-record six homers in an 8-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the NL Division Series on Monday.
Kyle Schwarber, Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro and Dexter Fowler also homered, powering Jake Arrieta to another win despite a rare off night for the bearded ace. The Cubs’ previous record for most homers in a playoff game was five in the opener of the 1984 NL Championship Series against San Diego.
A third straight win for Chicago on Tuesday afternoon, and the once woebegone franchise will advance to the NLCS for the first time in 12 years. The Cardinals, who led the majors with 100 wins this season, have won at least one playoff series in each of the last four years. Jason Heyward and Stephen Piscotty homered for St. Louis, and Jhonny Peralta had a run-scoring double.
Pre-game coverage from Wrigley Field begins at 2:42-p.m. today (Tuesday), on KJAN, with the first pitch at 3:37-p.m.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — A somewhat promising start has given way to a troubling reality now that Iowa State has started Big 12 play. If that sounds familiar to Cyclones fans, it should. Iowa State is in the midst of yet another season-defining stretch.
The Cyclones (2-3, 1-1 Big 12), fresh off letting Texas Tech gain a school-record 776 yards in a 66-31 road loss last weekend, host No. 3 TCU (6-0, 3-0) on Saturday before a road trip to No. 2 Baylor.
It will take arguably the biggest win in school history just to earn a split over the next two weeks — and Iowa State would still be below .500 with five games to go.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA), Monday, awarded $924,000 in Main Street Iowa Challenge Grants to 14 communities around the state. The grants will benefit local improvement projects such as façade upgrades and restoration, upper floor rehabilitation and remodeled spaces for expanding downtown businesses. In the KJAN listening area, the City of Avoca received a $75,000 grant toward the $280, 650 cost of restoring the Avoca Bank Building. The City will provide a $205, 650 match for the grant. The City of Manning also received a $75,000 grant toward the Manning Child Care Center project. The total project cost is $277,600. The City will put up a $202, 600 match for the grant.
The grants are administered through IEDA’s Iowa Downtown Resource Center and Main Street Iowa programs. The funding will be distributed in the form of matching grants to the selected Main Street programs. The estimated total project cost of the 14 projects is over $8 million.
Main Street Iowa Coordinator Michael Wagler said “Each project must provide at least a dollar-for-dollar cash-match. Overall, these projects will leverage eight times the state’s investment into bricks and mortar rehabilitation. These projects will have a significant economic impact within each district.”
The Challenge Grant program is funded through an appropriation from the Iowa Legislature. Since the first appropriation in 2002 through 2014, approximately $5.9 million in state and federal funds have leveraged over $37 million of private reinvestment into 110 projects in 43 Main Street Iowa commercial districts across the state.
