Iowa Transportation Commission approves funding for State Recreational Trails Program

The Iowa Transportation Commission today (Tuesday) approved $3.4 million for six State Recreational Trails Program projects. Included among them was the Hospital Connector Trail Bridge, in Manning, which received $222,300.
The State Recreational Trails Program was created in 1988 with the purpose of developing and maintaining recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both motorized and non-motorized trail users. The funding is available to cities, counties, state agencies, local governments, and nonprofit organizations through an annual application-based program.

Shenandoah home invasion suspect arrested

A man who allegedly broke into a residence in Shenandoah and threatened the persons inside was arrested early this (Tuesday) morning after fleeing the home before officers arrived. Authorities say 27-year-old Ryan Johnson, of Shenandoah, faces 1st degree burglary and assault with a dangerous weapon charges, in connection with the incident that happened at around 12:45-a.m., at 201 North Broad Street.

Page County sheriff’s deputies located Johnson and brought him to Shenandoah, where he was being held without bond in the Page County Jail.

The Big 10 Conference announced there player of the week honorees following games on October 10th.  Iowa Running Back Jordan Canzeri won the Offensive Player of the Week Honor.

Spaghetti Meat Sauce (10-13-2015)

Mom's Tips

  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1/3 cup finely chopped carrot
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 pound mild Italian bulk sausage
  • 2 cans (16 oz. each) Italian plum tomatoes
  • 1 can (6 oz.) tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons dried basil leaves, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 medium bay leaf
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 cup dry red wine or beer
  • hot cooked spaghetti
  • grated Parmesan cheese

In a 10 inch skillet over medium-high heat, saute onion and carrot in oil for 3 minutes or until onion is transparent.  Transfer to a slow cooker.

Place beef and sausage in skillet and stir with a spoon to break up pieces.  Cook over high heat just until beef loses its pink color.  Drain off fat and place meat in slow cooker.

To slow cooker, add tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, basil, salt, bay leaf, garlic powder, pepper and wine or beer (do not stir).  Cover and cook at low heat for 8 to 10 hours or at high heat for 4 hours or until vegetables are tender.  If mixture is boiling hard on high heat and needs stirring, resume timing when mixture returns to a boil.

Serve over spaghetti and sprinkle with cheese.

Makes 12 (1/2 cup) servings

Afton man arrested on DOC warrant for Parole Violation

The Creston Police Dept. says a man from Afton was arrested Monday afternoon. 23-year old Taylor Ruble was taken into custody in the 200 block of Pine Street in Creston, on a Dept. of Corrections warrant for Violation of Parole. Ruble was being held without bond in the Union County Jail.
