McClear Defends ANF Fall Classic Title

RIVERSIDE, Iowa – The University of Iowa men’s golf team placed second at the ANF Fall Classic on Wednesday. Fifth year senior Mac McClear won the tournament for the second year in a row after shooting a 67 (-5) in the final round of the tournament. McClear played the final two rounds of the tourney at 10-under par.

Despite the chilly morning at Blue Top Ridge Golf Course, McClear carried his momentum from the second round over into the final round. McClear birdied eight of nine holes including making six birdies in a row. McClear opened his final round with a birdie putt to cut his deficit to two strokes. McClear took the outright lead on hole 15 and never looked back. McClear has now won six tournaments as a Hawkeye and tied a school record. (Lonnie Nelson, 1976)

At the turn of the final round, the Hawkeyes had four golfers ranked in the top-25 of the standings. McClear was in a tie for first at 11-under par, Noah Kent was in a tie for 12th at even par, Hogan Hansen was in a tied for 17th at 2-over par, and Josh Lundmark was tied for 19th at 3-over par.

Lundmark, Ian Meyer, and Max Tjoa tied for 34th place with a 225 (+9). All three competed individually.

Cale Leonard also competed individually. Leonard finished tied for 25th after carding a 73 (+1) today.

Felipe Pedraza withdrew from the tournament after the second round.

HAWKEYE NOTABLES 

  • Mac McClear tied a school record, previously set by Lonnie Nelson in 1976, for most wins as a Hawkeye with six.
  • Mac McClear led all individuals in par breakers with 17 birdies.

UP NEXT 

The Hawkeyes travel to Chicago, Illinois, to compete in the Chicago Highlands Collegiate tournament hosted by Wake Forest. The tournament will take place from Sept. 18th-19th.

Ames native Joe Evans is looking forward to his final game in Jack Trice Stadium. The former Ames High School quarterback began his career at Iowa as a walk-on and now as a senior defensive end he is one of the captains. As an Ames native he has a unique perspective.

Iowa State’s Caleb Bacon takes advantage of his opportunity

Iowa State linebacker Caleb Bacon had a breakout game against Northern Iowa. The walk-on from Lake Mills had five tackles and two sacks in a 30-9 win over the Panthers.

Saturday Bacon and his Cyclone teammates will try to beat Iowa for the second straight season.

LORENE MARIE TEMPLEMAN, 98, of Ankeny, formerly of Atlantic, died on Wednesday, September 06, 2023 in Ankeny.  Funeral service for LORENE MARIE TEMPLEMAN will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic.  Schmidt Family Funeral Home of Atlantic is assisting the family.

Northern Iowa’s Sam Schnee talks improvement on offense

U-N-I wide receiver Sam Schnee says the offense had a disappointing performance against Iowa State and they want to turn that around at home against ninth ranked Weber State. The Redshirt senior from Dubuque had four catches for 34 yards in a 30-9 loss at Iowa State.

Quarterback Theo Day was a part of the offensive woes, and Schnee believes he will bounce back.

Drake’s Todd Stepsis previews Northwestern College

Drake coach Todd Stepsis says the Bulldogs hope to bounce back from a dissapointing effort Saturday night when they host defending NAIA champion Northwestern College. Drake opened with a 55-7 loss at 15th ranked North Dakota. After trailing 14-0 at halftime the game unraveled in the second half.

North Dakota piled up 652 yards of offense in that game, including 288 on the ground.

Defending national camp Northwestern is top ranked in the NAIA Poll and opened the season with a 48-35 win over Concordia of Nebraska.

Stepsis says the Drake offense will need to keep pace.

Stepsis says the Red Raiders are highly skilled on offense.

Canadian smoke is back over Iowa again

The wildfire smoke from Canada is back over Iowa once again. Brian Hutchins at the D-N-R Air Quality Bureau says the hazy conditions a visible in parts of the state.

Hutchins says there’s enough concentration of the smoke that it is impacting air quality.

He says you should take note of you tolerance and make adjustments to how much time you will be outside.

He says the haze will be visible at least through today (Wednesday).

Council Bluffs Police Gun Report Turns out to be Water Gun

Council Bluffs Police report that on Wednesday, September 6, 2023 at approximately 8:35 a.m,. a party called the Council Bluffs Police Sergeants’ Office to report a juvenile being seen with what appeared to be a gun getting onto a school bus. The reporter did not have much information, as they had received this information from another party. The caller did have the number of the school bus.

The bus route was immediately identified and the schools that bus serviced were notified. Officers responded to those schools. The bus was located and stopped by officers. The bus video was reviewed and the juvenile was identified.

The juvenile (17 yr old male – student) was located was found to be in possession of a squirt /water gun.  There was no threat to the safety of students or staff members.

At this time there are no criminal charges for the squirt gun. The incident is being investigated by the Council Bluffs Community School District for any disciplinary action.

As a reminder, look-alike weapons at school are PROHIBITED and are a violation of Council Bluffs Student Code of Conduct.

Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports that on September 6th, Fremont County Deputies with the assistance of the Shenandoah Police Department conducted a narcotics investigation in the 2700 block of Highway 59 in Fremont County.  Deputies arrested 36 year old Fredreck George Steven Billings II of Shenandoah on charges of Delivery of Methamphetamine, less than 5 grams, Class C Felony; Drug Gathering, Class D Felony; Keeping a Premises of Vehicle for Controlled Substances, Aggravated Misdemeanor; Possession of Marijuana, Serious Misdemeanor
Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Simple Misdemeanor.

Also, 47 year old Catina Jo Blank, age 47 of Shenandoah was charged with Delivery of Methamphetamine, less than 5 grams, Class C Felony; Drug Gathering, Class D Felony; Keeping a Premises of Vehicle for Controlled Substances, Aggravated Misdemeanor; Possession of Marijuana, Serious Misdemeanor; Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Simple Misdemeanor.

And, 25 year old Chelsea Jenon Blank of Shenandoah was charged with Drug Gathering, Class D Felony; Keeping a Premises of Vehicle for Controlled Substances, Aggravated Misdemeanor; Possession of Marijuana, Serious Misdemeanor; Possession of Methamphetamine, Serious Misdemeanor.

Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports that on September 5th, deputies were called to Farragut for a report of an intoxicated male causing a disturbance.  Deputies arrived and made contact with 34 year old Mark Anthony Hardin of St Joseph, Missouri.  Hardin entered a boat on Hartford Ave and refused to exit the vessel.  After a short standoff, Hardin exited the boat and began resisting arrest by deputies.  Hardin was charged with Interference with Official Acts, Public Intoxication, and Unlawful Possession of a Schedule III controlled substance.
