Carson hopes to capitalize on Thursday’s debate with stops in Iowa

News

August 8th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Iowa is the first stop for Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson after Thursday night’s FOX News debate. Carson says he’s gotten a “phenomenal” response to his performance. “I think we got our message out, looking at you know what’s happened with Facebook and Twitter and you look at the social media,” Carson says. “Obviously the message got out in a very, very substantial way.”

Carson says the debate has helped him connect with voters on social media. His campaign staff told reporters he’s gotten around 24-thousand new Twitter followers since the end of the debate when he delivered an “off-the-cuff” closing statement that mentioned his surgical career. “You know, a debate stage? You’re not going to really get to know the person that well. Six minutes? I don’t think so,” he says. “When I finally got some questions, it went well.”

Carson will be in Cedar Rapids and Des Moines today (Saturday), for what his campaign has called “Family Festivals” featuring food and entertainment from a Christian musician. “Well, we didn’t have the strawpoll, and that normally would attract a lot of families, so this is the substitute,” Carson says. The Iowa G-O-P’s Straw Poll would have been held this Saturday in Boone, but it was cancelled after none of the candidates agreed to participate. Carson has begun airing campaign ads in Iowa.

On Sunday morning he’ll speak at a church in Osceola, and on Sunday afternoon he’ll hold another “Family Festival” outdoors in Council Bluffs.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Randal Grichuk hit a three-run homer to cap a six-run fifth inning, and Lance Lynn pitched the St. Louis Cardinals past the Milwaukee Brewers 6-0 Friday night. Lynn (9-6) stranded nine runners in six innings as the NL Central leaders became the first major league team to reach 70 wins this season. He allowed six hits and four walks while throwing 109 pitches.

It was the second consecutive shutout and 12th this season for the Cardinals (70-39), who beat Cincinnati 3-0 on Thursday behind All-Star Michael Wacha. Brewers rookie Tyler Cravy (0-3) replaced veteran Kyle Lohse in the rotation and had little trouble with St. Louis until unraveling in the fifth. The Cardinals had three doubles, a walk and a single in the inning before Grichuk hit his 14th homer.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Iowa public health officials have confirmed the first case of West Nile virus this year. A woman from Ringgold County is recovering from the illness.

SOLON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a girl who drowned while swimming at Lake Macbride beach in Eastern Iowa was on a field trip with 25 other children from a Cedar Rapids child care center. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office tells the Press Citizen 6-year-old Alaina Joy Hauskins was with Kids Kampus Learning Center Thursday on an annual trip to the beach, part of a 2,000-acre state park 16 miles north of Iowa City, when she drowned.

ATLANTA (AP) —Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker will have more than 5 minutes and forty five seconds to address GOP voters on Saturday. Unlike Thursday’s nationally televised Fox News debates that divided the 17-candidate field into two groups on crowded stages, Saturday’s RedState Gathering in Atlanta, Georgia offers several of those seeking the Republican nomination a half-hour all to themselves. Noticeably absent from the event will be Donald Trump. RedState’s Erick Erickson says he withdrew Trump’s invitation because of a comment Trump made Thursday evening about Fox News debate moderator Megyn Kelly.

ATLANTA (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina is looking to parlay a standout debate performance into serious campaign momentum. The former Hewlett-Packard executive reminded 1,000 conservative activists at the RedState Gathering in Atlanta yesterday that several recent presidents were once dismissed as underdogs.
