Bluffs man charged w/the shooting of his father, struggled w/mental illness

News

August 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

A Council Bluffs man accused of killing his father has struggled with mental health problems and discussed those problems openly on Facebook. The Omaha World-Herald reports police think the day after  55-year old Robert Schendel died from numerous gunshot wounds, his 21-year old son Sean posted statements on Facebook that he had “never felt more alone” and that “family isn’t forever.” Robert Schendel was found dead in his home, last Wednesday.

On July 22, Sean posted lyrics from the rapper T.I.: “All I wanna do Is chill … take my mind off all the ones I wanna go n kill.” He also posted statements about having panic attacks and said he is a “waste of life.” Duane Renz, Sean’s uncle, told the paper said Sean has struggled with mental health problems since birth. When he turned 18, his father and his mother, Phyllis Schendel, asked a judge to appoint them guardians of their son.

Sean Schendel wrote in court documents that he wanted his parents to have guardianship over him to help him with daily activities and medical decisions. Court records say st the time, he was receiving counseling for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and depression, and described him as having an impaired decision-making capacity. The guardianship arrangement allowed the parents to make financial and medical decisions for Sean without court approval. Phyllis Schendel is deceased. Robert Schendel terminated the guardianship a year ago.

Police say Sean Schendel withdrew money from his dad’s bank account and took his minivan to drive to Colorado. Sean was arrested last Friday at a motel in Sterling, Colorado. Authorities say during a police interview over the weekend, he admitted to killing his father. Officials haven’t said what might have led to the shooting.

Sean Schendel appeared in a Colorado court on Monday and signed a waiver to be extradited, according to a court clerk in Sterling. Iowa authorities have 14 days to transport him back to Iowa. When he’s returned to Iowa, he’ll face charges of first-degree murder and two counts of second-degree theft. A memorial service for Robert Schendel is scheduled for 10 a.m. today (Tuesday), at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home, (1221 N. 16th St.), in Council Bluffs.

Democratic candidates for congress now in 3rd and 4th districts

News

August 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

Two Democratic candidates have emerged as potential challengers for two of Iowa’s Republican congressmen. Kim Weaver of Sheldon — the chairwoman of the O’Brien County Democratic Party — hopes to be the Democratic nominee who will challenge Republican Congressman Steve King in 2016.

“Every day we wake up to have one of the most ineffective and offensive members of congress representing us in Washington,” Weaver said. Weaver announced her candidacy this past weekend during the Iowa Wing Ding in Clear Lake where more than two-thousand Democrats cheered her on — and booed King.

“Hardly a week goes by without him making some kind of derogatory comment and this has to stop,” Weaver said. Weaver supports raising the minimum wage, opposes “privatizing” Social Security and Medicare and she describes herself as “strongly pro-choice.”

“I believe that women should determine their health care and not have it dictated to them by Steve King,” she said. Weaver, a Des Moines native, has lived in Sheldon for the past 24 years. She’s a single mom with two children in college and another who’s a graduate of M-I-T. She is a long-term care ombudsman who travels in 15 counties in northwest Iowa for her job.

The fourth congressional district has a Republican voter registration edge. King plans to seek reelection in 2016 to an eighth term in congress. He defeated Democrat Jim Mowrer in the 2014 election. Mowrer, who is now vice chair of the Iowa Democratic Party, has moved to Des Moines and announced on Monday that he would run again for congress, but in the third district. The seat is currently held by first-term Republican David Young of Van Meter. Mowrer will face a Democratic Primary. In July, Democrat Desmund Adams of West Des Moines announced he would run in the third district. Adams was an unsuccessful candidate for a state senate seat in 2012.

Piscotty scores go-ahead run, Cardinals beat Giants 2-1

Sports

August 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Rookie Stephen Piscotty tripled and scored the go-ahead run on Mark Reynolds’ groundout in the eighth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Monday night. The run came a little too late for Michael Wacha, who allowed one run in seven innings with six strikeouts but missed a chance to become the majors’ first 15-game winner.

Yadier Molina hit his third homer leading off the fourth for St. Louis. The Giants tied it on Brandon Crawford’s two-out RBI triple in the sixth. The Cardinals have won nine of 12, ended the Giants’ four-game winning streak, and lead Pittsburgh by six games in the NL Central.

Kevin Siegrist (4-0) worked a perfect eighth against the top of the Giants order and Trevor Rosenthal earned his 37th save in 39 chances when pinch-hitter Buster Posey flied out to the wall in center.

August 18th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Sprint car driver Kevin Swindell had a second surgery on his back Monday for two fractures suffered in a crash last week at Knoxville Raceway. A statement from Swindell’s family said “both surgeries have been successful.” Swindell is still undergoing tests for a spinal cord injury.

The 26-year-old driver was injured in a crash last Thursday in the lead-in races to the Knoxville Nationals. His car flipped at the start of a heat race. His family said they realize Swindell has a “long battle ahead, but Kevin has remained positive throughout the process and is prepared to fight to regain his health.”

Swindell is the son of famed sprint car driver Sammy Swindell. He is a four-time winner of the Chili Bowl Nationals, and has 30 starts on NASCAR’s Xfinity Series.
