AMU and HMU awarded Water Flouridation Quality Awards

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports more than three dozen Iowa water systems have been awarded Water Fluoridation Quality Awards from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among the utilities or communities receiving the award was: Atlantic Municipal Utilities; Harlan Municipal Utilities; the Bayard, Breda and Casey Water Supply services; and, the Logan and Onawa Municipal Water Plants.water from tap

Fluoridation is the adjustment of fluoride in drinking water to a level effective for preventing tooth decay. The award recognizes those communities that achieved excellence in community water fluoridation by maintaining a consistent level of fluoride in drinking water throughout 2014.

For 2014, a total of 2,282 public water systems in 33 states received the awards, including 40 in Iowa.

Bluffs Police chase and use stun gun on man following traffic stop

A traffic stop late Wednesday night in Council Bluffs resulted in a pursuit, foot chase and capture of the suspect after a stun gun was deployed. According to Bluffs Police, 28-year old Christopher Owens was arrested on an outstanding warrant for his arrest, in addition to charges of eluding, aggravated assault on a police officer, carrying weapons, unlawful possession of prescription medications, and reckless driving.

His arrest occurred after an officer tried to pull over a vehicle at around 11:10-p.m. The driver, identified as Owens, failed to stop. Owens’ vehicle eventually struck a light pole near 1st Avenue and South 10th Street, in Council Bluffs. After Owens took off on foot, the officer deployed his Taser, bringing Owens into submission.

3 people arrested on drug charges in Creston

Three people were arrested this (Thursday) morning on drug charges, in Creston. According to the Creston P-D, 19-year old Jacob Roach, of Lamoni, 18-year old Chet Clark, of Lorimor, and 19-year old Benjamin Seville, of Delphos, were taken into custody at around 2:35-a.m. at 1501 W. Townline Road. The trio were each charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana. They were brought the Union County Jail and held on $1,000 bond, each.

And, at around 7:45-p.m. Wednesday, Creston Police arrested 36-year old Jason Ford, of Creston, on a Dept. of Corrections warrant for Probation Violation. Ford was being held in the Union County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

Creston Police report also, a business was broken into sometime between 11-a.m. Tuesday and 7-a.m., Wednesday. The culprit(s) forced their way into The Can Place (202 Russell St.) by kicking in a door. A cash register with money inside was stolen. The loss was estimated at $320.

Youth Pheasant Hunt Oct. 24th in Cass County

The Cass County chapter of Pheasants Forever will hold a youth pheasant hunt on Saturday, October 24th.  The event is open to youth who have completed hunter safety training. The hunt will take place in the morning from 8-a.m. until Noon.

Pheasants 4 everParticipants will be provided a box of either 12 or 20 gauge ammunition.  If there are youth that would like to attend but do not have a shotgun, the chapter will provide one. Parent or guardians of youth who want to participate need to contact Becky Dreager, Cass County PF Youth Coordinator prior to October 22nd at 712-249-5130.

The youth will need to meet members of the chapter at the Atlantic Hy-Vee parking lot at 8-a.m..

IA Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds to tour s.w. IA facilities

Iowa Lieutenant Governor Kim Reynolds will be touring various facilities in southwest Iowa this Friday. At 9-a.m., Reynolds will be in Glenwood for a tour of Mainstreet Glenwood. The event takes place at the Glenwood City Hall.

At 11-a.m., she’ll be in Sidney, for a tour of the new Fremont County Law Enforcement Center, a public open house for which was held Sept. 24th.  Friday afternoon, Iowa’s Lt. Governor will be in Shenandoah for a 1-p.m. tour of the Greater Shenandoah Historical Museum/Historical Society.

She’ll wrap-up her day in Corning, with a 3-p.m. visit to Precision Pulley, Inc.
