Cubs put squeeze on Cardinals, even NLDS with 6-3 win

Sports

ST. LOUIS (AP) – Kyle Hendricks and Addison Russell had successful squeeze bunts and Jorge Soler capped a five-run second with a two-run homer, and the Chicago Cubs held off the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 on Saturday night to even their NL Division series at a game apiece.

Manager Joe Maddon made all the right moves a night after the Cubs lost the opener 4-0. Now the series shifts to Wrigley Field for Game 3 Monday, where Chicago’s 22-game winner Jake Arrieta faces St. Louis’ Michael Wacha in the best-of-five series.

The usually steady NL Central champion Cardinals made two errors as the Cubs didn’t hit the ball out of the infield in scoring their first three runs in the second.

Playing in his first postseason game, Soler connected off Jaime Garcia (0-1), who was lifted because of a stomach ailment after the second inning.

North Dakota State rallies to beat Northern Iowa 31-28

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Carson Wentz threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Darrius Shepherd with 35 seconds remaining to lift North Dakota State over Northern Iowa 31-28 in a game between two top-10 FCS teams on Saturday. After Northern Iowa (2-3, 0-2 Missouri Valley) missed a 38-yard field-goal attempt, Wentz led a 10-play, 79-yard drive capped by Shepherd’s twisting catch while blanketed by two defenders in the corner of the end zone.

Wentz threw 33 yards to Shepherd with 7:49 left to lead 24-21 but on the first play after the ensuing kickoff Northern Iowa’s Aaron Bailey broke loose for an 83-yard scoring run. Wentz finished 26 of 40 for 335 yards and four scores but also threw his first two interceptions this season. Wentz had 143 attempts without a pick until then.

Bailey ran for 157 yards and Daurice Fountain had 110 yards receiving for the Panthers. The Bison (4-1, 2-0) have won four straight.

Cardinals say Garcia removed due to stomach virus

Sports

October 10th, 2015 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals starter Jaime Garcia was removed due to a stomach virus after two shaky innings of Game 2 in the NL Division Series. Garcia badly blew a play on a safety squeeze by pitcher Kyle Hendricks that led to the Cubs’ five-run second inning and was victimized by another successful squeeze the next at-bat.

Though none of the runs were earned, the lefty’s first postseason start since 2012 was a disaster. He left trailing 5-1. The team made the announcement before the fifth inning.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Patrick Mahomes threw for 428 yards and five touchdowns, two to Jakeem Grant, to lead Texas Tech past Iowa State 66-31 on Saturday for the Red Raiders’ first Big 12 win. Grant had a career-high 166 yards on nine catches. He caught TD passes of 75 and 37 yards for Texas Tech (4-2, 1-2). It was Grant’s third 100-plus-yard game this season.

DeAndre Washington had a receiving and a rushing TD, while Justin Stockton scored on a 54-yard rush. The Red Raiders intercepted Cyclones quarterback Sam Richardson three times — two by J.J. Gaines — and Texas Tech scored touchdowns off two of them. Mahomes was sacked for only the second time this season when he was called for intentional grounding.

Redshirt freshman Mike Warren had his third straight game of more than 100 yards for the Cyclones (2-3, 1-1), finishing with a career-high 245 yards on 23 carries.
