Iowa State hosts UNI in crucial opener

Sports

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Hardly anyone outside of the state will pay much attention to the Northern Iowa-Iowa State game. Yet it’s an opener with big ramifications for both programs. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads enters his seventh season in Ames under great scrutiny after back-to-back 3-9 and 2-10 seasons; including two straight defeats to FCS opponents on opening day. A third such loss — on a night when the Cyclones will host their largest crowd in school history — could doom Rhoads’ tenure at Iowa State.

Northern Iowa opens 2015 ranked 10th in the FCS and eager to make a long playoff push. Plus, the Panthers know they can win at Jack Trice Stadium. They did it two years ago — and in 2007 as well.

Hawkeyes open 2015 with dangerous Illinois State

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — C.J. Beathard has been waiting for his chance to be Iowa’s starting quarterback for years. He’s getting his wish this season. Beathard will make just his second career start — and his first at Kinnick Stadium — when the Hawkeyes host FCS school Illinois State on Saturday.

Beathard, a redshirt junior who spent the last two years backing up now-Michigan quarterback Jake Rudock, was anointed the starter in January. Iowa is hoping that Beathard’s strong arms, quick feet and increased knowledge of the playbook can help lift its offense out of the doldrums in 2015.

Chiefs beat Rams 24-17, finish preseason unbeaten

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chase Daniel threw a touchdown pass and the Kansas City Chiefs beat the St. Louis Rams 24-17 to finish unbeaten in the preseason on Thursday night. The Chiefs (4-0) were unbeaten in the preseason for the first time since 1969, the season the franchise won its lone Super Bowl title. The Rams (0-4) were winless for the first time since 2002 and are 2-10 the past three preseasons.

Tavon Austin had the most electrifying play of the game, reversing field on a 43-yard scamper after a short catch that set up St. Louis’ first touchdown. The Rams played most of their regulars for two series, although they were down to fourth string at running back, and the Chiefs rested all of their starters.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press

OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says his Iowa organization has picked up steam in recent months. The Vermont senator and 2016 hopeful appeared Thursday at a campaign office opening in Ottumwa. People packed inside the building and spilled out onto the street, enthusiastically cheering his appearance.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The first television ad backing Republican Governor Scott Walker’s presidential campaign to begin airing in Iowa next week highlights his 2011 battle with public sector unions. The 60-second ad was released Thursday by the Unintimidated super PAC that has announced it is spending $17 million in the next six months on an ad campaign backing Walker.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump ruled out a possible third-party White House bid Thursday and vowed to support the Republican Party’s next presidential nominee — whoever that may be. To the dismay of Republican leaders, Trump has emerged as the overwhelming front-runner in the party’s crowded field of candidates.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Court documents show an Iowa man charged with sexually assaulting and killing a woman told police that she simply was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.” The Telegraph Herald reports that 19-year-old Helmon Betwell is charged with murder, sexual assault and two counts of burglary. He made an initial appearance Wednesday in court, where his bond was set at $1 million.

Mayor gives ‘word’ at rally touting stadium progress

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mayor Francis Slay attended a rally touting progress of a task force to develop a new stadium on the downtown riverfront, giving fans his “word” there would be a new stadium and the Rams would be playing in it. Dave Peacock, leader of the group, was a lot more circumspect. Peacock said he and Gov. Jay Nixon met with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in New York on Wednesday, and said “I’ve never guaranteed anything.”

About 300 people attended the rally in the Missouri Athletic Club parking lot Thursday night not far from the Edward Jones Dome where the Rams and Chiefs played in a preseason finale. The rally lasted about 20 minutes and wound up about a half-hour before kickoff. Several protesters held signs saying “No Vote, No Stadium.”

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jake Rudock started for Michigan at quarterback against Utah on Thursday night. New Wolverines coach Jim Harbaugh chose not to reveal the winner of the competition between Rudock, a graduate transfer from Iowa, and Shane Morris, before the game.

Rudock completed his first pass, a short one in the flats to De’Veon Smith that gained 6 yards. He then completed a 4-yard pass to Jake Butt for a first down. Harbaugh has said that Morris, who was the backup for most of the past two seasons, also could play.
