Former big leaguer Adron Chambers suspended 50 games

Sports

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

NEW YORK (AP) — Former big league outfielder Adron Chambers, currently in the Chicago Cubs’ farm system, has been suspended 50 games under baseball’s minor league drug program following a second positive test for a drug of abuse. Atlanta pitcher Steve Borkowski has been suspended for 68 games and San Francisco pitcher Alvaro Diaz for 25 games, the commissioner’s office said Tuesday.

Borkowski tested positive for a metabolite of Stanozolol. The reason for Diaz’s violation was not announced, but the only specified 25-game penalty in the minor league program is for unauthorized use or possession of a syringe.

Chambers, 29, is on the roster of the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. He played for St. Louis from 2011-13 and hit .216 with nine RBIs in 84 big league games and 99 plate appearances with the Cardinals.

Chambers began 2014 in Houston’s minor league system and was traded to Toronto. He spent this year at Triple-A Iowa, where he hit .280 with one homer, 30 RBIs and nine steals.

Borkowski, who turns 23 Saturday, was 3-1 with a 9.00 ERA over 10 games and 20 innings this season with Danville of the rookie level Appalachian League. Diaz, 22, was 0-1 with a 7.24 ERA in 14 relief appearances this year for the rookie-level Arizona League Giants.

There have been 92 suspensions this year under the minor league program, including 34 for drugs of abuse.

Iowa State researchers discover mystery piglet tremor virus

Ag/Outdoor

November 3rd, 2015 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — A team of veterinary researchers at Iowa State University has discovered the cause of a disease that makes baby pigs involuntary shake which has perplexed hog farmers for more than 90 years. Researchers from the university teamed up with scientists from Missouri-based animal health company Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica to use new DNA sequencing techniques to trace the piglet tremors to a virus.

Infected piglets, sometimes referred to as “shaker pigs” or “dancing pigs,” can die from starvation if the tremors are severe enough. Iowa State veterinary pathologist Bailey Arruda says veterinarians have long recognized the congenital tremors but could never pinpoint the cause until now. Now that the researchers have identified the virus, work can begin to develop a vaccine.
