Sports

September 13th, 2023 by Jim Field

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says he is focused on getting the Cyclones to bounce back from a tough loss. The Cyclones are 1-1 after a 20-13 loss to Iowa and next up visit Ohio.

It is the Cyclones’ first road test of the season.

Ohio is 2-1 on the season after a 17-10 win at Florida Atlantic.

The run game struggled against Iowa but the offensive line has protected quarterback Rocco Becht through two games. The Cyclones have not given up a sack.

Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara has returned to full practice as the 25th ranked Hawkeyes get ready to host Western Michigan. McNamara played in the first two games despite a quad injury he suffered in a public scrimmage last month.

As his mobility improves it should add to the play book.

McNamara is completing a shade under 57 percent of his passes and he would like that number to be higher.

Low river levels a threat to fish

Ag/Outdoor, News

September 13th, 2023 by Jim Field

Experts say river levels are so low the state’s fish population is stressed — and conditions could cause more fish kills. Meteorologist Jim Lee at the National Weather Service office in Des Moines says there’s not been enough rainfall to replenish rivers.

In many areas, river levels are so low canoeing and kayaking is not recommended because boats would scrape the river bottom. Lee says some of Iowa’s river basins are at 10 percent of normal capacity.

The first frost happens across Iowa during the first half of October and experts say if lakes and waterways were to freeze at these low levels, oxygen levels will be lower — and fish could suffer. Lee says it doesn’t appear weather patterns will change in the next couple of weeks or perhaps even longer.

In July, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources reported nearly 21-thousand Shovelnose Sturgeon had died along a 60 mile stretch of the Des Moines River in southeast Iowa. D-N-R biologists determined the fish kill was caused by low water levels and high-water temperatures. It was the largest fish kill in the region since 2012. In late August, the D-N-R estimates up to five-thousand fish were killed along a 74-mile stretch of the Upper Iowa River in Winneshiek County.

NCAA Upholds Shannon Suspension

University of Iowa Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Tuesday that the NCAA denied defensive tackle Noah Shannon’s appeal for eligibility in 2023. Below are statements from Ferentz and Shannon:

Kirk Ferentz:

I am incredibly disappointed by the NCAA’s decision this weekend. Noah is an exceptional person who has been a great leader on and off the field for our program over the last five years. While we will certainly miss him on the field, I am grateful that Noah has chosen to remain a part of our program as he prepares for the next step of his journey.

Noah Shannon:

I want to apologize to the fans and everyone who supports Iowa Football. I made a mistake and I have taken responsibility for it. I am heartbroken that I will not be able to play alongside my brothers again, but I plan to stick with the team and support them any way that I can going forward.

I want to say thank you to my family, Coach Ferentz, the coaching staff, and all of my teammates and friends for their unwavering support. I am going to make sure that this mistake does not define me or my career going forward.

Shannon, a native of Aurora, Illinois, is a sixth-year senior in the Hawkeye football program. He was a two-time honorable mention all-conference, starting all 27 games at defensive tackle in 2021 and 2022. Shannon totaled 107 career tackles, including 47 in 2021 and 44 in 2022. He amassed 8.5 tackles for loss, tying for second most on the team, while his 6.5 sacks tied for the most last season. Shannon was honored with the team’s defensive Team Hustle Award in 2021 and Hayden Fry Award a year ago.

Cary Wins Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week

Sports

September 12th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer team captain Samantha Cary was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Cary’s award last week was the first weekly conference recognition of her career. The fifth-year veteran is also a four-time Big Ten Player to Watch honoree.

Cary was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for efforts in Iowa’s pair of road shutouts against No. 18 Virginia on Sept. 7 and George Mason on Sept. 10.

The Hawkeyes tied the ranked Cavaliers team in a scoreless match before downing George Mason, 3-0. Cary contributed to the total against George Mason, drilling her first goal of the season with a header sent by freshman Keira Smyer to put the game out of reach in the second half.

The Hawkeye defense was stellar again this week, allowing two shots or fewer in three of four halves played. Iowa has allowed two shots or fewer in 10 of 14 halves played this season.

Iowa shut down a ranked Cavalier team that entered the match with 20 goals already under its belt. The clean sheet was Iowa’s sixth this season. The Hawkeyes have given up just one goal on the year.

Cary played all 90 minutes at No. 18 Virginia, marking the fifth time she has played the entirety of a match this season. She leads Iowa position players with 594 minutes this season.

Cary and the Hawkeyes open Big Ten Conference play on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Iowa hosts Illinois for Junior Hawk Club Day at the Iowa Soccer Complex.
