BBB: Make sure loans are legit before paying collectors

News

September 4th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowans who are getting aggressive calls from loan collectors need to be sure the loans they’re trying to collect are real, especially before making payments. Lisa Schiller, with the Better Business Bureau, says those collectors need to have a paper trail to confirm any loan they’re trying to collect. “They should be able to provide you with proof that you owe money, whether it was from years ago or it was more recent, where is the proof?” Schiller says. “They should be able to provide you with that.” In many cases, Schiller says businesses buy loans in bulk without first checking to see if they are still valid.

“Don’t just go ahead and pay it because somebody called you or sent you a threatening letter,” she says. “You really have to look into it these days. You have to just do a little bit of homework.” Also, be very careful before you sign up for “debt settlement” payment plans, as Schiller says predatory companies will simply take your money and not help you with your bills at all.

“What we always tell consumers, is to make sure, first of all, that the person that’s trying to collect on that debt is legitimate,” Schiller says. In many cases, she says collectors may try to pass off out-of-date or already-paid loans as still active. If you’re having trouble, contact state consumer protection or the B-B-B for help.

105,000 Iowa workers are union members

News

September 4th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The latest federal data shows about 105-thousand union members were in Iowa’s workforce last year. That’s seven percent of the entire workforce and the first increase in statewide union membership in four years. Paul Iverson at the University of Iowa Labor Center says it’s partly due to the impact of the pandemic.

Recent strikes — and even the threat of a strike — are drawing attention to the labor movement’s impact, according to Iverson.

Last week Iverson visited the picket line at Thombert in Newton where 84 United Auto Workers went on strike August 1st. Thombert is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of polyurethane wheels for electric forklifts. “It’s an issue of we want a safe workplace, we want safe working hours, we want pay and benefits commensurate with the profit that we are making for you,” Iverson says, “so all of those things go into this strike.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (Iowa, 25-21): South Dakota State came out with momentum, securing the first three points of the set, but Iowa stuck with them. After back-to-back kills by Anna Davis and Buettner, the Hawkeyes tied the game at four. The teams battled back and forth before Iowa pulled ahead with a solid block by Davis and Mateo to shut down the opposing team’s swing. The two teams battled back and forth, keeping the score tight. Iowa held on to the lead, stretching the spread to 14-11, from a McSweeney kill. South Dakota State then took a timeout, coming back with a kill. Ortega responded with a sneaky dump, putting the ball back with Iowa. Three consecutive kills by the Hawkeyes brought Iowa to a 20-15 lead. The Jackrabbits narrowed the gap to two, but ultimately Iowa went on to win the set.

SET 2 (Iowa, 25-19): The set was back and forth from the jump, but Iowa pulled ahead, 5-2, capitalizing on South Dakota State errors. Iowa maintained the lead after Davis found open space on the floor for a tip. The Jackrabbits tied the set at six, but Iowa took control again after a kill by Moravec. The two teams battled with the set coming to a tie three times. Iowa pulled ahead, 14-11, after a pair of kills by McSweeney, both assisted by Ortega. The Iowa lead brought South Dakota State to a timeout, and the Hawkeyes came back to the court, pushing the spread to four. After a long rally and a few noteworthy digs by Dennis, Iowa continued pace, leading 18-14. A trio of kills by Mateo, McSweeney, and freshman Gabby Deery stretched the Hawkeye lead, 22-17. Iowa took the set following a service error by the Jackrabbits.

SET 3 (Iowa, 25-23): Iowa opened the final set with a pair of kills by Buettner, giving assists to Dennis and Ortega. The Jackrabbits took the lead in the beginning, but Iowa battled to close the gap as Buettner and Moravec added kills to the board. The Hawkeyes tied it up at eight after an attack error by the Jackrabbits. South Dakota State then jumped ahead, 10-8. After a successful challenge, Iowa earned the ball back, and Buettner posted three consecutive kills, allowing Iowa to expand its lead, 12-10. The Jackrabbits attempted to retaliate, but Deery and Buettner came through swinging to record two more kills for the Hawkeyes. South Dakota State took a timeout, and Buettner came out swinging, posting her fifteenth kill of the match. Another successful challenge brought Iowa’s lead to 21-17. Kaeding, a native of Iowa City, Iowa, won the Lou Groza Award, presented to college football’s top placekicker, in 2002, and was a finalist for the award in 2003. He is Iowa’s all-time scoring leader with 373 points. Kaeding scored one touchdown, kicked 67 field goals, and was good on 166 PATs. ALBANY, New York – Freshman Dionne van Aalsum‘s fourth multi-goal game of the season led the seventh-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-0 victory over No. 19 UAlbany on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Turf.

“Great team win against a very talented Albany team,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “When we stuck to the game plan we were clinical. Lots of growth this weekend. We are excited to get back home and play in front of the home crowd on Grant Field next weekend.”

Van Aalsum gave the Hawkeyes the early lead 1:58 into the game scoring off an assist from freshman Miranda Jackson. She recorded her second goal less than two minutes later off a penalty corner assisted by junior Annika Herbine.

Cyclones and Gauchos Draw, 2-2

Sports

September 3rd, 2023 by Asa Lucas

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State soccer program earned its first draw of the 2023 season on Sunday afternoon, tying UC Santa Barbara 2-2 on a hot day at the Cyclone Sports Complex.

Both Salomé Prat and Mira Emma notched their second goals of the season; however, it wasn’t enough to down the Gauchos, who saw Lauren Helwig score a brace. Both of Helwig’s scores came from penalty kicks in the second half.

The Cyclones played in front of their largest crowd of the year so far on Sunday, as 555 spectators took in Sunday’s action.

Though UCSB had more shots, corners and saves than the Cyclones, the Gauchos were unable to get anything going on the offensive end. Helwig capitalized on some over-aggressive ISU defense and converted both PK attempts to notch both her second and third goals of the year.

The first 30 minutes of action for both teams was pretty even, though the Gauchos were outshooting the Cyclones 6-2. Abigail Miller had a good look for the Cyclones in the 17thminute, sending a speedy line drive toward the UCSB net only to have it stopped.

Iowa State didn’t get another shot off until the 36th minute; however, this shot connected. Salomé Prat buried a goal from roughly 25 yards out off a Jocelyn Bice assist to put the Cyclones on top. ISU would take its 1-0 lead into the break, leading at half for the second time on the year.

The Cyclones were hot out of the gates in the second stanza, jumping all over the Gauchos and punching in a second goal in the 47th minute to take a quick 2-0 lead over UCSB.

Iowa State’s defense held serve until an Isabella Agrusso foul in the box gave the Gauchos a PK in the 52nd minute. Helwig, UCSB’s leading shot-taker, attempted the PK and brought UCSB within one.

The two teams battled for the next 20 minutes, with the only shots coming from ISU, one of which Emma just missed right.

The Gauchos began to threaten in Cyclone territory in the 72nd minute, eventually drawing their second penalty in the box in the 73rd.

Helwig again converted the PK to knot things up at two. From there, UCSB shifted its focus solely to defense. The Gauchos didn’t attempt another shot, withstanding a pair of attempts from the Cyclones, and walked out of the Cyclone Sports Complex with their third draw of the year.

Mira Emma’s goal today was the 13th of her career, pushing her into a tie for tenth-most all-time in program history.

Fannon’s Thoughts

“Our quality just dropped off in the last half hour and it cost us the game. We have to have more consistency. We probably should have gotten a second and maybe a third goal in the first half and then maybe the game is over, especially when we came out in the second half the way we did. The understanding of what that consistency needs to look like will help us.”

Goals

Iowa State: Salomé Prat (36’), Mira Emma (47’)

UC Santa Barbara: Lauren Helwig (52’ – pen, 74’ – pen)

Assists

Iowa State: Jocelyn Bice, Nicolasa Jacobs

UC Santa Barbara: N/A

Following its two-game homestand, Iowa State will take to the road next Thursday, Sept. 7, when it travels to Oregon to face off with Portland State. Next Thursday’s game is set to kick off at 2 p.m. CT and will be streamed on ESPN+.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz on the victory over Utah State

Sports

September 3rd, 2023 by Ric Hanson

Iowa started quickly in a 24-14 win over Utah State. Quarterback Cade McNamara had touchdown passes on the first two possessions but after that the offense sputtered and the Hawkeyes finished with only 88 yards of rushing.

McNamara finished 17 of 30 for 191 yards and a couple of scores despite dealing with a quad strain.

Ferentz says it is an injury they will need to manage and hopes it will improve as the season goes on.

Iowa State won last year’s game 10-7 in Iowa City, snapping the Hawkeyes’ six game win streak in the series.
