A five-foot long, more than 3,000-pound piece of steel that was part of a World Trade Center wall that fell during the 9-11 attacks is making its way through western Iowa this afternoon, and should be passing through Cass County on Interstate 80, between 1:30-and 2-p.m. The steel beam is being transferred to the Poudre Fire Authority in Ft. Collins, CO., and is being escorted across the country by more than 100 different Emergency Service Agencies, including the Patriot Guard Riders and American Veterans.

Members of the Poudre Fire Authority’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, Colorado Task Force 1, were tasked and dispatched to the scene of the World Trade Center Twin Towers collapse shortly after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. The team worked for several weeks to locate victims.

The Audubon Police Department today (Friday) released a report on arrests. Officials say on Oct. 1st, 35 year old Jason Arthur Malloy was arrested for Possession of Marijuana 3rd or subsequent offense and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Malloy was released after appearing before a magistrate. On Oct. 2nd, 28-year old Jerod Dewayne Joyce, of Atlantic, was arrested for Trespassing. Joyce pled guilty while appearing before a magistrate.

On Oct. 3rd, Audubon Police 32-year old Jeremiah Micah Jobe, of Audubon, after conducting a search warrant. Jobe was charged with Possession of Marijuana with Intent to Deliver and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is currently being held in the Audubon County Jail on $5000 cash bond. The Audubon County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search warrant.

On Oct. 14th, Audubon Police arrested 30-year old Tiffany Lynn Swagel, of Audubon, for Domestic Abuse Assault. Swagel appeared before a magistrate where she pled guilty to the charge. And on Oct. 17th, 29 year old Jessie Allen Hoagland, of Audubon, was arrested for Supplying Alcohol to Minors. Hoagland was released on promise to appear.

Tim Ennis, of rural Adams County, announced today (Friday) that he will seek the Democratic nomination for State Representative in the special election to be held on December 8th. The special election for House District 21 was called after the passing of Rep. Jack Drake, of Griswold. The District includes all of Adams and Union Counties as well as parts of Cass and Pottawattamie Counties.

Ennis said in a press release, that he’s “Running for the Iowa House because our public schools can’t wait another year for adequate funding from the Legislature.” He said also, “I’ll work to make sure every kid in Iowa gets a quality education and guarantee that rural schools get our share of state resources.”

Residing in Corning, Tim has spent most of his career as a contract negotiator and grain marketing consultant for cooperative grain producers. He is the Director of Grain Marketing for the National Farmers Organization.

Among the Republicans who, so far, have expressed an interest in running for State Representative in House District are Tom Moore of Griswold, John Hartkopf and Ian Barrs, both of whom are from Atlantic.

The Page County Sheriff’s Office reports a woman was arrested on a Theft charge, Thursday. 60-year old Karen Gay Spicer, of Shambaugh, was arrested at her residence on a Page County warrant for Theft 3rd Degree. Spicer was transported to the Page County Jail where she posted a $2000 bond and was released pending future court proceedings.

A manhunt is underway in Des Moines after a violent road rage incident on Thursday afternoon. Police say there was an argument between the drivers of two cars on the capitol city’s northeast side. It’s not clear what sparked the dispute but the driver of one car drove away and the other followed. Police say multiple shots were fired from the pursuing car and the victim’s car crashed in a ditch and hit a fence.

The driver was NOT seriously hurt. That driver snapped a picture of the suspects. The car police are seeking is a silver Toyota Camry with Iowa plates DMK905. It was reportedly driven by a white woman with two black men as passengers.

Heroin addiction is a very dangerous, growing problem in Iowa, according to a federal prosecutor for the state’s northern judicial district. Assistant U-S Attorney Dan Chatham prosecutes drug crimes, including dozens of heroin cases, the numbers of which have grown as users move from prescription meds to heroin. Chatham says the heroin on Iowa’s streets is getting more and more potent.

Chatham says, “We had a DEA resident agent-in-charge who came from down close to the border who was shocked when he started seeing us having 30% pure heroin in Iowa.” Speaking before the state’s Drug Policy Advisory Council in Des Moines on Thursday, Chatham says an especially powerful variant of heroin known as fentanyl started showing up in Cedar Rapids earlier this year.

“During that same time period, there were over 40 overdose-related calls for service, just in the first three months of 2015, just in this year,” Chatham says. “That’s an incredible number.” Chatham says dealers are meeting growing demand with the purer product. The Cedar Rapids Police Department has created a new position of heroin coordinator. A Des Moines police officer says heroin cases used to be rare and now they happen weekly. Chatham says bed space for critical detox is scarce and he adds, there’s a waiting list for a heroin opiate summit at the University of Iowa College of Public Health next month.

Officials with the Iowa Tourism Office and the Travel Federation of Iowa presented 27 awards recognizing excellence in the tourism industry Thursday night (Oct. 22nd), in Fairfield, during the 2015 Iowa Tourism Conference. Carla Eysink, president of the Travel Federation of Iowa, said “The Iowa Tourism Awards are the highest honor given in our state’s tourism industry The winners are truly the best of the best.”

Awards to both metro and rural areas were made in 13 award categories. In addition, conference attendees voted for the People’s Choice Award; nominees were the second-highest scoring nominations in 12 of the categories.

In the category of “Outstanding Attraction,” the Hard Rock Hotel in Casino, in Sioux City, won the award in the Metro communities division. Manning’s “Kinderfest” event won an award for “Outstanding Event” in the rural division. Among the persons receiving an “Outstanding Individual Leader” awards, was Cindy Thompson, with the Pottawattamie County Conservation Board (Metro division), and Jay Hartz, with the Hotel Pattee, in Perry (rural division). The Hotel Pattee also won the “Outstanding Niche Marketing Initiative” award in the rural division.

The annual Iowa Tourism Conference brings together nearly 300 industry representatives from across the state to network, attend educational sessions and discuss emerging industry trends. Officials say tourism in Iowa generates more than $8 billion in expenditures, employs 66,500 people statewide and generates $374 million in state taxes.
