Iowa women host PSU Wednesday

The Iowa women host Penn State Wednesday night. The Nittany Lions have lost five-in-a-row, but Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder says they shouldn’t be taken lightly. “They’ve got talent, height, and speed,” Bluder said. “I would say last year maybe they did not shoot the ball as well as they were capable of, but this year, they’ve got three guards on the floor who are shooting the ball very well from three point range that we have to defend,” Bluder said.

The Hawkeyes are coming off an 80-73 loss at Michigan State on Saturday. Iowa had a 16-point lead late in the first half, but committed 18 turnovers that aided the Spartans’ rally. “You’re going to have turnovers. If you have a turnover, though, you’ve got to dig your heals in on defense and I don’t think we did that,” Bluder said. Iowa has started the Big Ten season with three wins and three losses.

Penn State enters the game at 1-5 in conference play. Wednesday’s tipoff is at 7pm at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

WAVERLY, Iowa (AP) — Republican presidential hopeful Marco Rubio promised to keep “talking about God” as he campaigned across Iowa Monday, reminding influential evangelical voters of his commitment to Christian values just two weeks before the state’s leadoff caucuses. The Florida senator’s GOP rivals have dismissed him as too moderate at times, but on Monday, he spoke of how Christian conservative values would guide his decisions in the White House, if he is elected. The Florida senator, a Catholic, opened up about religion when confronted by an atheist during a town hall-style meeting in Waverly, Iowa.

BOXHOLM, Iowa (AP) — The Boxholm fire chief says a space heater may be the cause of a fire that killed a mother and her three children. FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Fort Dodge firefighters are working to stop a fire across the street from their fire station. No. 19 Iowa State knocks off No. 1 Oklahoma 82-77

Sports

January 19th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Georges Niang scored 22 points, Monte Morris added 20 and No. 19 Iowa State beat top-ranked Oklahoma 82-77 on Monday night, its first win over a No. 1 team since toppling Wilt Chamberlain’s Kansas Jayhawks in 1957. Morris had a jumper, a key rebound and two free throws in the final 21 seconds for the Cyclones (14-4, 3-3 Big 12), who were actually slight favorites at home.

It was the third time a No. 1 team lost in the state of Iowa this season. Northern Iowa beat North Carolina and Iowa beat Michigan State. Oklahoma’s Isaiah Cousins hit a 3 with 41 seconds left to tie the game at 75. But Morris drilled a step-back jumper for the lead, and Abdel Nader’s free throws with 3.1 seconds to go put it out of reach.

Buddy Hield scored 27 points and Cousins had 26 for the Sooners (15-2, 4-2), who could make a case for retaining the top spot with a win Saturday at No. 13 Baylor.

Chiefs OC Pederson hired as Eagles new Head Coach

Sports

January 18th, 2016 by admin

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Eagles have hired Doug Pederson to be their coach.

Pederson was Kansas City’s offensive coordinator the past three seasons.

Pederson accepted the offer to become Philadelphia’s coach last week. The team had to wait for the Chiefs to be eliminated from the playoffs before making it official.

Pederson started nine games as quarterback for the Eagles in 1999. He replaces Chip Kelly, who was fired one game before completing his third season.

The Eagles interviewed six candidates, including two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Coughlin.

News

January 18th, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Police in Council Bluffs Monday afternoon released additional details concerning an emergency landing by a small aircraft that took place late Monday morning. Authorities say just before 11-a.m., emergency personnel responded to the area of East Manawa Drive and Red Tail Road for an emergency landing of an airplane in the bean field North of a housing subdivision.

A further investigation revealed the airplane a single engine Cessna had taken off from the Council Bluffs Airport and a short time later began experiencing engine trouble. The pilot, Travis Yohn, was able to safely land the plane in the empty field. The pilot and the other occupant, Connor Galvin, were both unhurt and the airplane sustained no visible damage.

Officers with the Council Bluffs Police Department were working Monday afternoon with the Federal Aviation Administration and the Council Bluffs Airport personnel in removing the airplane from the field.
