The Tampa Bay Buccaneers opened the NFL season with a 20-17 win over the Minnesota Vikings in the Twin Cities. Former Iowa star T.J. Hockenson had eight receptions for the Vikings and says pressure by the Tampa defense was a key.

The Vikings need to bounce back in a hurry. They visit Philadelphia on Thursday night.

Tampa Bay tight end Ko Kieft, of Sioux Center, says this was a big win for the Bucs.

Kieft, who played college ball at Minnesota, had a lot of people in the Twin Cities watching him.

Kieft says he is living his dream playing in the N-F-L.

The Iowa defense held Iowa State out of the end zone until late in the game while blocking a field goal and scoring on an interception to win 20-13 in Ames Saturday. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says they expected a hard-fought game.

Linebacker Sebastian Castro picked off Cyclone quarterback Rocho Becht in the second quarter and returned it for a 30-yard touchdown. It’s the 16 straight season Iowa’s defense has had a pick six and Castro was asked if that is expected.

The Hawkeye defense ended the game by stopping Iowa State on downs as they were trying to get the tying score.

Iowa’s offense got 17 of its 20 points in the first half and couldn’t complete drives in the second. Quarterback Cade McNamara says he missed some throws, and there were some mistakes, but he says they are getting better.

The win gave Iowa the Cy-Hawk trophy back after a loss last year in Iowa City. Hawkeye lineman and Cedar Rapids native, Connor Colby says that’s a great feeling.

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says he thought this was the best game his team has played in the series since he took over.

He said he was proud of the way his team battled back after getting down early.

Campbell said it was good to see the response by quarterback Rocho Becht after the interception for a touchdown.

Iowa State falls to 1-1 and is at Ohio on Saturday. Iowa Moves to 2-0 and returns home to face Western Michigan Saturday.

The Hawkeye win Saturday over Iowa State was the 200th career coaching victory for Kirk Ferentz. Ferentz says he didn’t achieve the milestone alone.

Ferentz has been the head coach for 25 years since returning to Iowa and that include 188 of the 200 wins. He says counting wins isn’t the goal of a coach.

Hawkeye players say Ferentz was emotional in the locker room after the game. Offensive lineman Conor Colby says it was special to be able to deliver the 200th win to Ferentz.

Quarterback Cade McNamara transferred to Iowa this season.

Ferentz started at Iowa as an assistant and left to become head coach at Maine for three seasons before returning to the Hawkeyes.

CORALVILLE, Iowa — University of Iowa volleyball downed Missouri State on Saturday night, 3-1, in its second installment of the Hawkeye Invitational inside Xtream Arena.

Sophomore Nataly Moravec posted a .303 clip with 12 kills on 33 attempts to lead the Hawkeyes. Fifth year Caitlan Buettner and senior Delaney McSweeney also posted double-figure kills, knocking down 13 and 11, respectively. Senior setter Bailey Ortega registered a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs. Buettner added three service aces and four blocks to her stat line, leading Iowa in both. On the receiving end, juniorSydney Dennis led the defense with 20 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

SET 1 (IOWA, 25-19): Iowa kicked off the match in commanding fashion, going on a 7-1 run with kills from junior Michelle Urquhart, McSweeney, freshman Gabby Deery (2), and Buettner — all assisted by Ortega. Missouri State chipped away, trying to take the lead, but the Hawkeyes capitalized on two Bear errors, along with a kill from redshirt junior Anna Davis and Buettner’s first ace of the night, going up 13-7. The Bears called timeout and Buettner came back with her second-consecutive ace. The set continued with each team allowing the other a couple points at a time, but it was Iowa that came out on top.

SET 2 (Missouri St., 25-21): Missouri State took the early lead, 2-0. Deery took it upon herself to get the Hawkeyes in the set, posting the first three point with two kills assisted by Ortega and the third assisted by freshman setter Kaia Mateo. The set was tied at four with a hitting error from the Bears. Davis posted a kill to tie the set again at five, but Missouri State got hot, taking the lead, 15-8. The Hawkeyes fought back with a five-point scoring run, lessening the spread to two. The two teams exchanged sets of three to keep Iowa within two before Missouri State called a timeout with the Hawkeyes down, 19-17. The Bears scored out of the break, but Iowa once again put up three points, tying the set at 20. The Bears won the set and tied the match at one-all.

SET 3 (IOWA, 25-21): A kill from Mateo and Buettner’s third ace of the match gave Iowa the early advantage. The two teams exchanged errors before Iowa posted three-consecutive points to lead, 7-3. As Missouri State crept up, the Hawkeyes kept the lead, 12-9, with back-to-back kills from Buettner and Davis. A pair of aces from the Bears tied the set at 12 and forced Iowa into a timeout. Missouri State got two more out of the huddle, but Iowa recovered and took back the lead with three Moravec kills and a Bear error. Out of a Missouri State timeout, the Bears tied the Hawkeyes for the last time in the set. Iowa responded with four before the Bears attempted a comeback, but Iowa kept the lead, winning its second set with a kill from Buettner and two blocks from Davis and Deery and Buettner and Davis.

SET 4 (IOWA, 25-21): Out of the gate, Missouri state posted three errors to give Iowa the early lead and before calling a timeout. Scoring went back and forth with the Hawkeyes keeping the lead after McSweeney registered a kill assisted by Mateo. The Bears went on a 7-1 run, taking the lead, 14-10, but Iowa fought hard, exchanging points and then going on its own 8-1 run, regaining the lead, 18-16. The Bears tried to recoup, but Iowa posted four kills and a block to close out the set and win the match.

HAWKEYE HIGHLIGHTS

• Ortega posted a double-double with 25 assists and 10 digs.
• Urquhart assisted three kills to register a season-high and most as a Hawkeye.
• Five Hawkeyes posted double-figure digs, including Dennis (20), Buettner (15), Amanda Darling (11), Urquhart (10), and Ortega (10).

(Holstein, IA) — At the Tim Thomas Cross Country Classic. Sioux City North won a close one in Class A for the boys.  The Dutchman earned second place in Class A boys, but won first in Class A girls. In Class B, East Sac County won the varsity boys title and Saint Edmond fort Dodge won the girls.

MADISON, Wis. – University of Iowa men’s and women’s cross country previewed the Big Ten Championships course at the Badger Classic on Saturday morning.

The men’s 8,000-meter race started the day, with the team earning 98 points and taking fifth place, and the women finished their 5,000-meter race with 164 point to place sixth.

The Iowa men were led by sophomore Miles Sheppard, who sped to a career best 24:38.3 to finish ninth overall. Sophomore Hayden Kuhn also set a new best, crossing the line in 25:02.5. Senior Jack Pendergastmade his season debut and was the third Hawkeye across the finish line, clocking 25:10.1. Sophomore Will Ryan (25:20.5) recorded a personal record, while freshman Miles Wilson followed right behind in 25:20.6 to round out the top five Hawkeye finishers. Brayden Burnett shaved five seconds off of his previous best from a year ago, stopping the clock in 25:41.2.

Senior Amber Aesoph led the Hawkeye women for the second-consecutive race, clocking in at 19:09.3. Sophomores Jalyssa Blazek and Aleah Tenpas continued their strong start to the season, finishing in 19:31.1 and 19:32.3, respectively. Tenpas’ mark was a new best. Freshman Clare Kelly once again found herself in the top five amongst Hawkeye runners, crossing the line in 19:40.2. Senior Brooke McKee rounded out scoring with a 19:49.2.

UP NEXT: The Hawkeyes will send a women’s-only squad to Normal, Illinois, for the Redbird Invite on Sept. 15.
