NCAA Upholds Shannon Suspension

Sports

September 12th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

University of Iowa Moon Family Head Football Coach Kirk Ferentz announced on Tuesday that the NCAA denied defensive tackle Noah Shannon’s appeal for eligibility in 2023. Below are statements from Ferentz and Shannon:

Kirk Ferentz:

I am incredibly disappointed by the NCAA’s decision this weekend. Noah is an exceptional person who has been a great leader on and off the field for our program over the last five years. While we will certainly miss him on the field, I am grateful that Noah has chosen to remain a part of our program as he prepares for the next step of his journey.

Noah Shannon:

I want to apologize to the fans and everyone who supports Iowa Football. I made a mistake and I have taken responsibility for it. I am heartbroken that I will not be able to play alongside my brothers again, but I plan to stick with the team and support them any way that I can going forward.

I want to say thank you to my family, Coach Ferentz, the coaching staff, and all of my teammates and friends for their unwavering support. I am going to make sure that this mistake does not define me or my career going forward.

Shannon, a native of Aurora, Illinois, is a sixth-year senior in the Hawkeye football program. He was a two-time honorable mention all-conference, starting all 27 games at defensive tackle in 2021 and 2022. Shannon totaled 107 career tackles, including 47 in 2021 and 44 in 2022. He amassed 8.5 tackles for loss, tying for second most on the team, while his 6.5 sacks tied for the most last season. Shannon was honored with the team’s defensive Team Hustle Award in 2021 and Hayden Fry Award a year ago.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa women’s soccer team captain Samantha Cary was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Cary’s award last week was the first weekly conference recognition of her career. The fifth-year veteran is also a four-time Big Ten Player to Watch honoree.

Cary was also named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week for efforts in Iowa’s pair of road shutouts against No. 18 Virginia on Sept. 7 and George Mason on Sept. 10.

The Hawkeyes tied the ranked Cavaliers team in a scoreless match before downing George Mason, 3-0. Cary contributed to the total against George Mason, drilling her first goal of the season with a header sent by freshman Keira Smyer to put the game out of reach in the second half.

The Hawkeye defense was stellar again this week, allowing two shots or fewer in three of four halves played. Iowa has allowed two shots or fewer in 10 of 14 halves played this season.

Iowa shut down a ranked Cavalier team that entered the match with 20 goals already under its belt. The clean sheet was Iowa’s sixth this season. The Hawkeyes have given up just one goal on the year.

Cary played all 90 minutes at No. 18 Virginia, marking the fifth time she has played the entirety of a match this season. She leads Iowa position players with 594 minutes this season.

Cary and the Hawkeyes open Big Ten Conference play on Sunday at 1 p.m. when Iowa hosts Illinois for Junior Hawk Club Day at the Iowa Soccer Complex.

The Hawkeye defense has been dominant, shutting out six opponents and allowing just one goal through seven contests. Iowa’s six clean sheets match last season’s total.

Iowa is one of three Big Ten programs ranked in the poll, alongside No. 3 Penn State (6-0-1) and No. 25 Nebraska (6-1-1). The Hawkeyes faced No. 10 Virginia on Sept. 7, resulting in a scoreless draw on the road.

NCAA denies appeal by Iowa’s Noah Shannon

Sports

September 12th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

The college career of Iowa defensive lineman Noah Shannon is over. Shannon was suspended for the season by the NCAA as part of a gambling investigation. Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz says his appeal has been denied.

Shannon did not wager on an Iowa football game but reportedly wagered on a game involving another Iowa sports team.

Ferentz says he does not agree with or understand the decision.

Shannon passed up the NFL Draft to return for a sixth year and Ferentz says he will remain involved in the program.

The 25th ranked Hawkeyes take a 2-0 record into a game at home against Western Michigan and Ferentz says a key this week is not looking ahead to next week’s Big Ten opener at seventh ranked Penn State.

Ferentz says all he has to do is point to the recent history of the series.

It is the Cyclones’ first road test of the season.

Ohio is 2-1 on the season after a 17-10 loss at Florida Atlantic.

The run game struggled against Iowa, but the offensive has protected quarterback Rocco Becht through two games. The Cyclones have not given up a sack.

DOT director responds to report on poor bridges

News

September 12th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The director of the Iowa D-O-T says the report by American Road and Transportation Builders Association ranking Iowa number one in poor bridges doesn’t tell the whole story. Director Scott Marler says there are four-thousand-558 structurally deficient bridges or poor bridges in the state — but that doesn’t mean they are unsafe.

Marler says Iowa ranks at the top in part because of the number of bridges here.

He says a majority of the poor bridges are on the rural road system.

Marler says counties are faced with significant and difficult decisions about which bridges to replace. He says only 26 bridges on the primary road system that the D-O-T oversees are in poor condition. Marler says they’ve reduced the number of poor bridges from 256 in 2006. And 21 of the 26 poor bridges on the primary system are slated for repair in the next five year road improvement program.

Iowa’s US House delegation backs impeachment inquiry of Biden

News

September 12th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – All four members of Iowa’s U-S House delegation are expressing support for an impeachment inquiry of President Biden. Iowa Congressman Zach Nunn, a Republican from Bondurant, represents Iowa’s third congressional district.

Earlier today (Tuesday), House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said allegations of corruption and abuse of power warrant further investigation and he’s directed House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Nunn spoke with reporters in Iowa as McCarthy was making the announcement in Washington.

Nunn says House Republicans are handling the investigation into President Biden differently than Democrats did when they voted to impeach President Trump a week before his term ended.

Congressman Randy Feenstra, a Republican from Hull who represents Iowa’s fourth district, says President Biden is corrupt and must be held accountable after credible whistleblowers say the president secured preferential treatment for his son who’s facing tax evasion charges. Feenstra says a thorough investigation is warranted about Biden’s involvement with is son’s foreign business dealings as well.

First District Congresswoman Mariannette Miller-Meeks says the impeachment inquiry gives House Republicans additional subpoena powers to seek bank records that may connect the dots regarding improper payments to President Biden and the Biden family. Miller-Meeks says it’s important to note that an impeachment inquiry may or may not lead to impeachment proceedings.

Earlier this month, Republican Congresswoman Ashley Hinson of Marion said she supports moving forward with an impeachment inquiry. Hinson, who represents Iowa’s second congressional district, said it gives House committees the tools they need to get information and answers to questions about the Biden family’s business dealings. Hinson says the two impeachments against President Trump were baseless and the American people want congress to prove a high crime or misdemeanor exists if the House moves to vote on impeaching Biden.

A spokesperson for Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign says the Republican-led House of Representatives has become an arm of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and the allegations against Biden are debunked conspiracy theories.
