Sebastian Castro Earns B1G Weekly Honor

Sports

September 11th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior defensive back Sebastian Castro has been named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Hawkeyes’ 20-13 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series win at Iowa State. The announcement was made Monday by the Big Ten Conference office.

Castro (5-foot-11, 205-pounds) returned an interception 30 yards for a score, collected four (three solo) tackles and had a pass break-up in last Saturday’s in-state showdown.

Castro’s pick-6 in the second quarter proved to be the game-winning score. The pick-six was Iowa’s first of the season and marked the 16th consecutive season that a Hawkeye defender has returned an interception for a score, the second longest active streak in the country (Utah).

One of Castro’s four tackles and his one pass break-up both came on third-down plays in the second half.

The native of Oak Lawn, Illinois, is the first Hawkeye to earn Big Ten weekly recognition this season.

Iowa (2-0) closes out nonconference play Saturday, hosting Western Michigan (1-1) on Duke Slater Field at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City (2:30 p.m. CT, BTN).

Southwest Iowa Art Tour Includes more than 90 artists at 18 Gathering Places in 11 Communities

News

September 11th, 2023 by Jim Field

This self-guided tour allows participants to begin and end where they would like, come and go from location to location at their leisure, and explore diverse art forms – including fiber art, sculpture, pottery, painting, metal works, jewelry, glassware and much more from more than 90 artists. The eighteen unique stops this year include the same footprint with all of last year’s communities represented, plus two additional Gathering Places in Glenwood and the return of the Harvester Artist Lofts & Gallery in Council Bluffs. Gathering Places will be located in the following Southwest Iowa towns: Avoca, rural Clarinda, Council Bluffs, rural Essex, Glenwood, Harlan, Macedonia, Malvern, rural Malvern, Neola, Red Oak and Villisca. The event will be held on its traditional third Saturday and Sunday in September, with an additional Friday “Sneak Peek” at select locations. This year’s Friday “Sneak Peek” hours are from 4 to 7 PM on September 15th at 9 of the 18 locations. This will provide attendees with the additional opportunity to explore the Gathering Places in Clarinda, Essex, Macedonia, Malvern, Neola and Villisca a little early – whether you can’t make it the other days or just need additional time to visit all locations over the weekend. Avoca, Council Bluffs, Glenwood, Harlan and Red Oak’s Gathering Places will join the tour on Saturday morning; the hours for all locations are from 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday, September 16th and from Noon to 4 PM on Sunday, September 17th.

The inaugural Southwest Iowa Art Tour was in 2014, when a group of local artists came together to create a regional event to connect their rural communities – a self-guided ‘Art Tour’ that would showcase their artworks, studios, galleries, and hometowns. The first year included six participating communities: Elliott, Macedonia, Malvern, Red Oak, Shenandoah and Stanton. Of the 21 artists who participated in the first event, 8 are participating in this year’s 10th Annual Southwest Iowa Art Tour. When you’re visiting with the artists along the way, take an extra moment to chat with Zack Jones, Paul Koch, Phil Lamb, Cece Lock, Curt Adams, Cherie Miner, Tom Harnack and Fred Bolton; and thank them for their foresight and dedication to creating and maintaining this wonderful event for southwest Iowa. The success of the Southwest Iowa Art Tour has grown the tenth annual event to eleven communities, eighteen Gathering Places, and more than ninety local artists. Two of the original locations – The Art Church in Malvern and The Painted Camel Gallery in Macedonia – are also celebrating milestones this year. The Art Church is celebrating the 150th Year of the building, showing off major exterior renovations, a new coat of paint and live music to accompany the Art Tour. After 9 years of ownership by Paul and Carol Jean Koch, the Painted Camel is transitioning into a cooperative non-profit for its 10th year of business.

The Southwest Iowa Art Tour is coordinated by Golden Hills RC&D of Oakland, Rebecca Castle Laughlin of Imogene, and the collaborative efforts of local participating artists. Funding for coordination of this event, which is free to the public, comes in part from grant funding and local sponsorships. The 10th Annual Southwest Iowa Art Tour was supported by an Iowa Tourism Grant from the Iowa Tourism Office and a Community Impact Grant from the Community Foundation for Western Iowa. Other partnering supporters at the $1,000+ level are Houghton State Bank of Red Oak and the Pottawattamie Countywide Tourism Promotion Committee. The $350 sponsors for 2023 include Malvern Bank, CB Skin Secrets of Council Bluffs, Dave Carbaugh State Farm of Red Oak, Kum & Go and Firespring. We are proud to have more than 24 local businesses, organizations and individuals as sponsors for the 10th Annual Southwest Iowa Art Tour. We encourage you to support those businesses who support the arts in southwest Iowa, and make the most of your Southwest Iowa Art Tour experience by stopping at the great restaurants and other shops in the host towns. To find out which businesses are sponsors of the Art Tour, a full listing may be found on our website at www.swiarttour.com, as well as a map so you can plan out your route.

The Southwest Iowa Art Tour began with the intent to not only bring awareness of the arts and artists in rural southwest Iowa, but also to help support economic reinvestment in our small towns through the arts. Remember that when you purchase an original piece of work from an artist, you are directly helping to make the arts a viable career choice in our area. And while you’re at it, grab a shake from the local ice cream shop and a burger from your local café.

For more information be sure to check the “Southwest Iowa Art” Tour Facebook page (with individual Facebook Events for each Gathering Place) and visit the website: www.swiarttour.com, or contact Becca at rebecca.castle@goldenhillsrcd.org.

The Wildcats played spoiler for Iowa State’s senior day which recognized eight Cyclones – Kristin Boos, Maddie Brant, Alex Campana, Olivia Edwards, Mira Emma, Abigail Miller, Salomé Prat and Hanna Reid – for their contributions to the program.

Kentucky got the ball rolling midway through the first half, scoring in the 23rd minute as Úlfa Úlfarsdóttir converted her second goal of the season off a Tanner Strickland pass to take a 1-0 advantage.

The Wildcats outshot ISU 12-4 on the afternoon and held the corner kick advantage 10-1.

Fannon’s Thoughts

“We’ve got to do a better job in the corners, to not give away so many of them. I think we haven’t done well in high-wide areas and sticking to our game model in those situations. We’ll fix those in training and I feel we’ll have better success.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Three first quarter goals led the top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 5-1 victory over UMass Lowell on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

The win moves the Hawkeyes record to 6-0 overall.
“I thought UMass Lowell gave us a really good challenge. Their strategy was great,” said head coach Lisa Cellucci. “They were trying to catch us in transition. It took us awhile to adjust, but we were opportunistic with our goals, and that helped us settle in.”
Freshman Dionne van Aalsum started off the scoring with a goal in the fourth minute off an assist by freshman Miranda Jackson. Freshman Lieve van Kessel extended the Hawkeyes lead with an unassisted goal 10:41 into the game.
Van Aaslsum wrapped up the first quarter with her second goal of the game assisted by junior Lieve Schalk and junior Annika Herbine.

Hawkeyes Down George Mason, 3-0

Sports

September 11th, 2023 by Asa Lucas

FAIRFAX, Va. – University of Iowa women’s soccer downed George Mason, 3-0, on Sunday in the non-conference finale. With the road shutout, Iowa improves to 6-0-1 overall heading into Big Ten Conference play.

The Hawkeyes were on the attack all afternoon, finishing with 25 shots to match a season-high total set against FGCU on Aug. 17 to start the year.

Iowa sent four shots in the first ten minutes of play. The last of those resulted in an Elle Otto score in the box, assisted by sophomore Morgan Lietz and junior Kenzie Roling. Otto’s three goals this season are an Iowa-best. Roling’s four assists also lead the team through seven contests.

The second goal came in the 37th minute when junior Delaney Holtey sent a long cross sweeping through the Patriot transition defense. It found senior captain Maggie Johnston in the box, who gave it one more nudge to set up senior Kelli McGroarty for her first goal of the season.

Also finding the net for the first time this season was fifth-year defender Samantha Cary, who drilled a header the 78th minute to slam the door closed. Freshman Keira Smyser earned the assisted on a high-arcing, cross-field pass that went up and over the George Mason defenders in the box.

Goalkeeper Macy Enneking nabbed one save en route to Iowa’s sixth clean sheet this season. The Hawkeye defense allowed George Mason only one shot.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH DAVE DIIANNI

“Today was a good ending to a long trip. Closing the book on our non-conference schedule, having played a lot of players today, getting young players experience, maintaining another shutout and scoring the goals needed to win.

We know it wasn’t the prettiest game by us offensively. Composure, intent and execution have to be better moving forward in the box, but finishing undefeated in the non-conference is a good springboard to Big Ten play.”

HAWKEYE NOTABLES

  • With 15 career clean sheets, Macy Enneking now ties Emily Moran ’11 at third in program history for career shutouts.
  • The Hawkeyes have held opponents to two shots or fewer in nine of 14 halves played this season. Iowa’s defense has allowed just one goal in 2023.
  • Iowa outshot George Mason 25-1. Iowa holds a sizeable advantage in shots taken (113-39) and shots on goal (50-17) against its opponents this season.
  • Sunday was the first meeting between Iowa and George Mason in women’s soccer.
  • 2 for the Money: The Hawkeyes are undefeated in their last 42 games when scoring two goals or more. Since the start of the 2018 season, Iowa has a record of 39-0-3 when scoring two goals or more. That includes a 4-0-0 record this season, 4-0-2 record in 2022, 9-0 in 2021, 2-0 in 2020, 13-0-1 in 2019 and 5-0 in 2018. The Hawkeyes won their final two games in 2017 when scoring two-plus goals. The last time Iowa lost a game while netting at least two goals was Oct. 1, 2017, at Michigan State (L, 3-2).
  • 90 Tracker: No Hawkeye position player logged 90 minutes against George Mason. Twenty-one Iowa players subbed in on Sunday. Cary (5), Freshman Millie Greer (4), Johnston (2) and senior Rielee Fetty (2) have each played the entirety of at least one game for the Hawkeyes this season.
