Last Call for Evaluating Your Estate Plan

Farmers are unique – particularly as there isn’t a distinct moment when they just walk out the workplace door to retirement as someone in a regular wage-earning job might do. Rather, farm families often need to think about how to transition the farm business to the next generation during lifetime, as well as having an estate plan in place.

That’s why Iowa State University Extension offers an “Evaluating Your Estate Plan” workshop to answer transition and estate planning questions and help families prepare for the future. The one-day workshop will be held on December 2nd at the Logan Community Center.

Anyone who is unsure of how to build a transition plan or what options are best for their farm operation and family should attend this workshop. The workshop will be held at the Logan Community Center on December 2, 2015 with registration starting at 9:00 am and adjournment at 4:00 pm. Advance registration is required and space is limited. The Evaluating Your Estate Plan workshop costs $50 per person and includes lunch and materials. To pre-register call the Harrison County Extension Office at (712) 644-2105.

DAVID ALFRED WALTER, 71, of Omaha (& formerly of Harlan), died Sat., Nov. 21st, at Bergan Mercy Medical Center, in Omaha. Funeral services for DAVID WALTER will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Nov. 24th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Harlan.

Visitation at the funeral home is from 10-until 11-am Tuesday.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

DAVID WALTER is survived by:

His wife – Ruth [Warner] Walter, of Omaha.

His son – Rick (Stacey) Walter, of Plattsmouth, NE.

Racing and Gaming chair says commission wants prosecution of underage gamblers

The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission levied fines totaling 100-thousand dollars against three casinos last week for allowing minors to get onto their gambling floors. One of the casino managers told the commission the father of an underage male helped him to gamble and the casino is pushing for them to be prosecuted. The chair of the commission, Jeff Lamberti of Ankeny, says local law enforcement dictate if charges are filed for underage gamblers, but the commission’s stance is clear.

We would like to see them prosecuted for it, because that’s been part of the problem, if there’s no consequence for the minor, then facility of course gets penalized, but it does nothing really to discourage them or others from trying,” Lamberti says. “So, we would like to see law enforcement go after them.” Lamberti, who is a lawyer, says the casinos have video surveillance that shows what happened and that would help in bringing charges.

“Pretty easy case to make, yeah, yeah,” Lamberti says. The Lakeside Casino in Osceola was fined 60-thousand dollars for letting a female minor into the casino six times in one week and Harveys Casino the Horshoe Casino in Council Bluffs were each fined 20-thousand dollars for allowing minors into their gaming areas. He points out that all the casinos self-reported the violations, and says casino operators are doing their best to keep minors out.

“Because of all the surveillance and all of the technology that we have now, they do a good job. But it’s not a perfect system, we try to do the best we can,” Lamberti says. Lamberti says there still appears to be no lack of young people who want to get into casinos and has this message for parents who think it’s a good idea to help their kid get into a casino.

“It’s a bad message if a parent is trying to encourage and assist a minor. You know, we have laws in place for a reason and we would just hope they wouldn’t do that,” Lamberti says. “And minors, we are going to encourage law enforcement to prosecute, because you need to be held accountable as well.” Lamberti says prosecuting minors will hopefully add another deterrent and prevent them from trying to get through security and into the casinos.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man who is interested in economics and international relations is one of 32 American Rhodes Scholars who will have the opportunity to attend prestigious Oxford University in England. Iowa City native Jeffrey Ding was one of the winners announced Sunday out of 869 applicants. In addition to economics, Ding is also studying political science and Chinese at the University of Iowa.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Ted Cruz is among the most hated men in Washington— and that’s the way he wants it. Cruz is casting himself as the grown-up, conservative alternative to outsiders Donald Trump and Ben Carson. But he suggests that some of his GOP rivals have gone too far. Cruz says in an AP interview, “Are there some in the Republican Party whose rhetoric is unhelpful with regard to immigration? Yes.”

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Rodham Clinton is proposing a new tax break for people caring for aging parents and grandparents as part of a series of benefits she is says will help middle-class families. The Democratic presidential candidate is unveiling her latest proposal on Sunday. She is seeking a tax credit of up to $6,000 to offset caregiving expenses for elderly relatives.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Paul Rhoads is out after seven seasons. Iowa State says athletic director Jamie Pollard told Rhoads on Sunday that he’s making the change. Rhoads will coach his final game with Iowa State on Saturday at West Virginia.

Houston’s pick-6, Poe’s TD run carry Chiefs over Chargers

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Justin Houston intercepted Philip Rivers’ pass and returned it 17 yards for a touchdown and 346-pound defensive tackle Dontari Poe leaped over the pile for a 1-yard touchdown and the Kansas City Chiefs embarrassed the free-falling San Diego Chargers 33-3 Sunday.

Alex Smith won again at Qualcomm Stadium as the Chiefs (5-5) won their fourth straight game following a five-game losing streak. The Chargers (2-8) lost their sixth straight. Rivers had his worst game of the season, throwing for just 178 yards. Rivers attempted a pass to Danny Woodhead from the Chargers 23 and Houston intercepted it and ran it in for a 19-3 lead with 3:27 left in the third quarter.

Houston sacked Rivers four times in the 2014 season finale in which the Chargers were eliminated from the playoff race. Smith, who led Helix High to consecutive city championships at Qualcomm Stadium, was 20 of 25 for 253 yards.

“BEA” SHEARMAN, 106, of Des Moines (& formerly of Atlantic), died Sat., Nov. 21st, at Wesley Acres, in Des Moines. Funeral services for BEA SHEARMAN will be held 10:30-a.m. Wed., Nov. 25th, at the United Church of Christ in Atlantic.  Roland Funeral Home, in Atlantic, has the arrangements.

AP Top 25: Iowa up to 3 behind Clemson, Alabama; Ohio St 8th

Iowa moved to No. 3 in The Associated Press college football poll, taking advantage of the first losses by Ohio State and Oklahoma State to slip in behind No. 1 Clemson and No. 2 Alabama. Notre Dame is fourth and Oklahoma is fifth. The unbeaten Hawkeyes (11-0) have their best ranking since being No. 3 in 2002. They have clinched the Big Ten West and a spot in the conference title on Dec. 5.

Michigan State jumped three spots to No. 6 after upsetting Ohio State 17-14 on Saturday. The Buckeyes, who began the season as a unanimous No. 1 and slipped to No. 2 earlier this month, fell to eighth. Oklahoma State’s 45-35 loss to Baylor dropped the Cowboys from fourth to ninth and pushed Baylor to seventh.
