STORM LAKE, Iowa (AP) — Two Wisconsin men are facing homicide charges after police and FBI officers arrested them in Storm Lake. Twenty-three-year-old Sergio Ortiz-Raygoza and 22-year-old Eric Salazar-Mota, both of Beloit, Wisconsin, were arrested Sunday on homicide warrants in connection to the January shooting death of a 5-year-old in Beloit. Police say the boy was shot by people targeting his father, who was driving a vehicle.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An animal welfare group has filed a complaint with U.S. Department of Agriculture about an escaped research goat that remains on the loose. Animal welfare group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to the University of Iowa and filed a complaint with the USDA regarding an escaped research goat that has been on the loose since Friday. PETA asked that the goat be transferred to a sanctuary if it is safely captured, and the complaint claimed the goat escaped due to violations of the Animal Welfare Act.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Four years after the Iowa Republican Party was criticized for mishandling an extremely close caucus, Democratic Party leaders are facing scrutiny over how they ran the state’s signature event. The tight contest between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders on Monday has highlighted the complicated process Democrats use to determine the winner and the bumpy road they take to get there. Clinton was named the winner Tuesday after winning by less than four “state delegate equivalents” out of 1,405, the measurement the party uses to calculate caucus-goers’ preferences.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — Several inches of snow have already fallen in the Sioux City area and the storm is expected to continue the rest of the day. Officials have closed a section of Interstate 29 between Sioux City and Tea, South Dakota, because of low visibility.

CAM PPEL approved Tuesday

News

February 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Cass County Auditor Dale Sunderman reports voters in the CAM Community School District, Tuesday, approved  the extending of the current Physical Plant and Equipment Levy (or, PPEL), along with an increase in the levy rate of 67-cents per thousand dollars property valuation, to $1.34 per thousand. Public Measure A was approved by a vote of 131 “yes” to 94 “no” votes, or 58.222% of the vote.

District officials say they plan to use the funds to improve and maintain their current facilities, purchase school buses and purchase technology for students and staff. The levy cannot be used for staff salaries or supplies – those expenditures must come from a school district’s General Fund.

The results of the vote will be canvassed by the Cass County Board of Supervisors, Thursday, beginning at 1-p.m.
