DEAN BEAMAN, 80, of Greenfield, died Sunday, February 7th, at the Adair County Memorial Hospital in Greenfield. Funeral services for DEAN BEAMAN will be held 2-p.m. Thu., Feb. 11th, at the Greenfield United Methodist Church. Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday at the Steen Funeral Home in Greenfield from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the family visitation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

Memorials may be directed to the Dean Beaman memorial fund to be established by the family at a later date.

DEAN BEAMAN is survived by:

His sons – Greg Beaman and wife Lorrie, of Greenfield, and Long Grove, Iowa, and Lonnie Beaman and wife Michelle, of Powder Springs, Georgia.

His step-daughter: Renee Kirlen and husband Roger of Golden, Colorado.

4 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

BETTY JEAN CAMPBELL, 88, of Harlan, died Feb. 3rd, at home. Funeral services for BETTY JEAN CAMPBELL will be held 11-a.m. Tue., Feb. 9th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Harlan.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday, from 9:30-a.m. until the time of service.

Burial will be in the Harlan Cemetery.

BETTY JEAN CAMPBELL is survived by:

Her sons – John (Susan) Campbell, of Harlan, & Kevin (Lisa) Campbell, of Des Moines.

Her daughter – Judith Piper, of Sioux City.

Her sister – Helen Holloway, of Irwin.

15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Fight in a car results in Adams County crash Sat. morning

A fight inside a vehicle early Sunday morning in Adams County led to a crash that resulted in one person being sent to the hospital. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office says 27-year old Christopher Adam Fannon, of Corning, faces OWI and Domestic Assault charges, after an investigation into the incident, which was reported to authorities at around 1-a.m., Saturday.

Officials say a vehicle occupied by Fannon and another person was traveling on Birch Avenue, when Fannon and the other person began fighting. The vehicle went off the road and entered a field. The unidentified passenger was injured during the altercation and transported to the Corning Hospital for treatment. Fannon was taken into custody as was being held in the Adams County Jail on a $1,000 cash bond.

Documents show Iowa has backlog of criminal appeal cases

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Documents show the Iowa attorney general’s office has a large backlog of criminal appeal cases, and the agency has warned the state about staffing issues for years. Chief Deputy Attorney General Eric Tabor described the conditions in a Jan. 7th letter to the Iowa Executive Council, which authorizes some expenses involving litigation.

Tabor sought permission for the Iowa attorney general’s office to hire three lawyers on a temporary basis to reduce the load. The office faces a backlog of about 100 criminal appeal cases. The council later approved the request.

Tabor says an Iowa Supreme Court rule change in 2012 that required more filing of appeal briefs has added work to the office. Documents show the agency tried to alert the state in 2013.

Fatal house fire in Council Bluffs Sat. evening

Firefighters in Council Bluffs discovered a body in a home that caught fire Saturday evening. Fire Chief Justin James says crews were dispatched at around 5:40-p.m. to 2722 Avenue H for a reported structure fire. They arrived less than three minutes later and found light smoke coming from a single family dwelling.

Upon entering the house crews were able to extinguish the fire quickly and conduct a primary search of the residence. Upon completion of the primary search fire crews reported to have found a deceased victim inside of the home. The victim has not been identified at this time.

Personnel from the Council Bluffs Fire Marshal’s Office, Council Bluffs Police Department, and the Pottawattamie County Medical Examiner’s Office are conducting the investigation. The fire and cause of death remains under investigation.

Regional Wrestling Dual Team assignments released

The Iowa High School Athletic Association released the Regional Dual Team wrestling assignments on Saturday night after sectional qualifying was completed.  The Atlantic/CAM wrestling team will be in a semi-final match with Glenwood that will be hosted at Creston.  Creston Orient-Macksburg will host Perry in the other semi-final.  Harlan will travel to Sergeant Bluff-Luton for a semi-final with the other semi-final at that site featuring Spirit Lake Park vs. MOC-Floyd Valley.  Dual team competition will take place on Tuesday, February 9th starting at 6:00pm.

In Class 1A area teams that will be competing include AHSTW, Guthrie Center, Logan-Magnolia, Missouri Valley, and Riverside.  AHSTW will face OA-BCIG in the semi-finals at Westwood.  Westwood hosts Hinton in the other semi.  Logan-Magnolia is a host site and will take on Guthrie Center in the semis while Missouri Valley takes on Riverside in the other semi-final there.

District Boys Swimming results, Atlantic’s Miller qualifies for state meet

The Atlantic Boys Swimming team competed in a District meet at Indianola on Saturday and came away with a 5th place team finish.  The Trojans’ Damon Miller won the 100 yard freestyle event and also was 4th in the 200 yard freestyle.  Aaron McAndrews was 7th in the 50 yard freestyle for Atlantic.  Times were of extra importance on Saturday as they were compiled in Des Moines for all the District meets around the state to determine the top 24 in each event that qualify for the state meet.  Damon Miller qualified for the state meet for the second straight year and was the only qualifier for Atlantic.  Miller ended up with the 15th fastest time in the 200 yard freestyle and was 14th fastest in the 100 yard freestyle.
