Adair & Guthrie Counties launches new emergency notification system

A new emergency notification system will be launched March 1st by the Adair & Guthrie County Emergency Management Agencies. Emergency Management Coordinator Robert Kempf says the Adair & Guthrie County Emergency Notification System is part of the growing statewide notification system “Alert Iowa.” Currently, 90 of Iowa’s 99 counties have or are in the process of implementing this statewide emergency notification system.

Alert Iowa was developed by Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management to provide all counties with access to a single, statewide notification system that provides local control of how and when to disseminate emergency and public safety messages to residents.

Adair & Guthrie County EMA will be activating public access to the new system February 1st. The existing CodeRED alerting system will remain in place through March 1st as citizens register for the new system and then that program will be eliminated.

Kempf says, “Joining the Alert Iowa System gives us more flexibility in providing alerts to the public, continue to provide automated weather warnings, provide us with more options and significantly reduce emergency alerting costs for the agencies.” Residents will be able to choose the types of alerts they receive, for severe weather watches and warning. Alerts can be sent to residents via landline and cell phone, text messaging and email.

In addition, Emergency Management has been granted access to interface the new system with the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS) to send imminent emergency and public safety messages through the Emergency Alert System, NOAA Weather Radio and the Wireless Emergency Alerts system. Using IPAWS for local alerts will be another method to ensure the most urgent information is delivered to as many residents as possible when an emergency is happening and requires the public to take immediate action.

Residents can sign up for multiple phone numbers and email addresses to receive emergency alerts for their 911 address within the counties. You may also sign up for alerts that may impact your place of business by registering separately for that address as well.

Representatives will be in each community from 7:00 to 9:00 PM on different days during the month of February to assist people in signing up. The community schedule is below:

Sunday’s High in Atlantic was 34. The 24-hour Low ending at 7-a.m. today was 20. Last year on this date we reached 37 for a High and 27 was the low. The All-time Record High in Atlantic on this date was 65 in 1944, while the Record Low was -28 in 1894.

Louisiana man killed in snowmobile crash, Iowa officials say

WHITING, Iowa (AP) – Authorities in western Iowa say a Louisiana man has been killed in a snowmobile accident. The accident was reported a little before 10:30 p.m. Saturday in a field about five miles northwest of Whiting. Authorities say David Daigle, of Baton Rouge, struck an irrigation pivot as he tried to cut across a farm field.

Daigle was pronounced dead later at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.  The Monona County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the accident

Atlantic Chamber Annual Dinner & Awards held Saturday

The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce hosted their Annual Dinner Saturday at the Cass County Community Center, sponsored by Deter Motor Company. Dinner was catered by the Atlantic Hy-Vee and was open to the entire community. The Chamber discussed accomplishments of not only the Chamber, but the community in 2015 as well as goals for the new year. Successful businesses, organizations and individual leaders in the community were honored for their commitment and support of the Atlantic Area.
The Athena Award, sponsored by Deter Motor Company, was presented to Kathie Hockenberry, with Hockenberry Family Care Funeral Homes. The award recognizes an exceptional individual who has achieved excellence in her/his business profession, has served the community in a meaningful way, and has assisted women in their attainment of professional goals and leadership skills.

Business of the Year was awarded to Renew Ag Supply, for their dedication to consumers and their support of the Atlantic Area. The Distinguished Service Award was given to Geis Perry Jewelry, for over 40 years of commitment, generosity and support of local businesses and events. The Community Betterment Award was given to the Atlantic Rotary Club, for their value and dedication to the community each and every day.Ambassador of the Year was awarded to Dan Mehmen for faithfully attending visits throughout the year, showing support for area businesses and fellow Ambassadors. The Star Ambassadors of the Year are Dolly Bergmann, Sue Muri, Russ Joyce and Pat McCurdy. Volunteer of the Year was awarded to Dr. Keith Leonard, for his willingness to help at any event with a smile on his face and a helpful, giving attitude. Finally, Educator of the Year was awarded to Michelle Huber, for her commitment to making sure every child succeeds.

Along with awards, the 2016 campaign “Explore, Discover, Share” was also introduced. The “Explore, Discover, Share” campaign will encourage residents and visitors to explore local businesses and attractions to discover something new. The goal of the campaign is to raise awareness for all the great businesses, interesting history and exciting experiences available in Atlantic and Cass County.

Community members and visitors that share their photos and experiences will be part of the Explorer Challenge contest and will be eligible to win prizes throughout the campaign. People will submit their photos and experiences of designated places on www.atlanticiowa.com to be shared on social media.“Explore, Discover, Share” will kick off this spring. More information regarding the campaign, attractions, businesses participating and prizes awarded will be released as the kick-off date gets closer.

Slumping Hawkeye women fall at Purdue

The Iowa Hawkeye women have dropped five of their last six games after Sunday’s 90-73 loss at Purdue. The Hawkeyes are 3-5 in the Big Ten and return to action Thursday at home against Michigan.

DOLORES “TINY” FELTNER, 89, of Audubon, died Sat., Jan. 23rd, at the Friendship Home, in Audubon. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for DELORES “TINY” FELTNER will be held 2-p.m. Tue., Jan. 26th, at the Kessler Funeral Home, in Audubon.

A family visitation will be held from 1-p.m. until the time of service Tuesday, at the Kessler Funeral Home, in Audubon.

Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Audubon.

DELORES “TINY” FELTNER is survived by:

Her sister – Rowena Baughman, of Lincoln, NE.

Infant twins BRAXTON MICHAEL and BENTLEY WAYNE FARLOW, of Greenfield, the sons of Ashley & William Farlow, of Greenfield, died Fri., Jan. 22nd, at the Greater Regional Medical Center, in Creston. Funeral services for BRAXTON and BENTLEY FARLOW will be held 1-p.m. Tue., Jan. 26th, at the Steen Funeral Home, in Greenfield.

The family will greet friends from Noon until 1-p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.steenfunerals.com.

A private, family burial will be held at the Hebron Cemetery in rural Orient.

Memorials may be directed to the family. A GoFundMe account has been set up in their names.

BRAXTON and BENTLEY FARLOW are survived by:

Their sisters – Kaitlyn and Jaya Farlow.

Their brother – Jaxsin Farlow.
